BSF recovers Chinese dronein Tripura
Agartala: Hours before the visit of Bangladesh high commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, to Akhaura Land Port on Friday, BSF recovered a battery-activated Chinese drone with a high-resolution camera, a few kilometres ahead of the India-Bangladesh border, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. Police said BSF jawans rushed to the bordering village Lankamura, close to Agartala airport, responding to a distress call and recovered the drone inside barbed wire fencing. Later, it was sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory for further investigationthrough the airport police station. "The bomb squad has deactivated the instruments, separated the camera and battery to zero down the risk of any remote explosion and to prevent any data capture from the vital installation during the investigation. However, we have not yet ascertained from where it has come," officer-in-charge of airport police station Abhijit Mandal said. Hamidullah arrived at Agartala for a three-day meeting. Witness protection scheme implemented: Saha
1 2 Agartala: CM Manik Saha on Sunday announced that the state govt has implemented a witness protection scheme to ensure the safety and cooperation of witnesses, a critical aspect in the delivery of justice, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. Addressing a workshop of three criminal laws here Saha said the initiative is part of the state's commitment to effectively implement the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which came into force from July 1, 2024. "These laws are a testament to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah . They reflect a shift from colonial-era frameworks towards a justice-driven, technology-enabled system that is citizen-centric, victim-friendly and time-bound," he said. He noted that new offences such as terrorism, mob lynching, and organised crime have been incorporated, which were previously missing from the legal framework. Moreover, the new laws provide stricter penalties for crimes against women and children, ensuring faster and more transparent justice. Recalling a meeting chaired by Shah in Guwahati on March 16, 2025, the CM said discussions were held with all northeastern states to monitor the preparedness for implementing these laws.

STF formed in West Tripura to identify, deport illegal immigrants
Agartala: In compliance with MHA directive to deal with illegal immigrants, West Tripura district police on Friday constituted a 15-member special task force (STF) to detect, identify and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. Tripura shares an 856km-long international border with Bangladesh, making it a sensitive zone for cross-border movement. According to an order issued by Kiran Kumar, SP, West Tripura district, the STF will include officers-in-charge of all 15 police stations in the district. The team will be led by deputy SP Debasish Saha. The order states that the STF has been tasked with the identification and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas residing in or detained within the district.

Tripura to set up fruit processing unit in Dhalai dist
Agartala: Tripura govt is planning to set up a new fruit processing centre under the PPP model in Nalkata under Dhalai district to boost the income of pineapple cultivators, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Agriculture and farmers' welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath on Saturday said in the past seven years, the department has exported 73.15 MT of pineapples to Dubai, Oman and Qatar while addressing the Pineapple Festival in Kumarghat of Unakoti district. Nath also said state govt is working to obtain the GI tag for Sidol Shutki (fermented fish), Sabri banana, and several other products. He said in Tripura, 1.46 lakh acres are used for fruit cultivation, of which 29000 acres was used for pineapple.
