Opposition demands action against Israeli ambassador for ‘unacceptable' response to Priyanka Gandhi
The Opposition parties on Tuesday criticised the Israeli ambassador's response to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's social media post about the 'genocide' in Gaza, and demanded action against the diplomat. On Tuesday, Vadra posted on social media platform X that Israel had ' murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children' in the besieged Palestinian territory since the conflict between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October 2023. '[Israel] has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,' the Wayanad MP said. Vadra said that 'enabling these crimes by silence and inaction' was a crime in itself. 'It is shameful that the Indian government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine,' she added. India's longstanding position has been to support a two-state solution for establishing a sovereign, viable and independent state of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace. Responding to the Congress leader, Israeli ambassador Reuven Azar said that 'what is shameful is [Vadra's] deceit ', claiming that his country's military had killed 25,000 members of Hamas. 'The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas' heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire,' Azar said on social media. The Israeli diplomat added that Tel Aviv had facilitated two million tonnes of food into Gaza 'while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger'. The population of Gaza had grown 450% in the last 50 years, Azar claimed, adding that there was 'no genocide there'. 'Don't buy Hamas numbers,' he said. The Congress said that it condemns the words used by the Israeli ambassador in response to the 'pain and anguish' expressed by Vadra. 'We do and find it totally unacceptable,' the party's communication in charge Jairam Ramesh said. Ramesh added: 'It is too much to expect the Modi government, which has shown extreme moral cowardice when it comes to speaking out on Israel's destruction of Gaza over the past 18-20 months, to take serious exception and objection to the ambassador's response.' Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said that she hopes that the Ministry of External Affairs reprimands the Israeli ambassador. The Rajya Sabha MP said that she had wanted to move a privilege motion against the Polish ambassador in 2022 for his social media post allegedly attacking her, but had decided not to raise it after a discussion with the external affairs minister. 'However this is emboldening them to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor while in our own country,' said Chaturvedi. 'This is unacceptable.' Israel's military offensive in Gaza began in October 2023 after Hamas killed 1,200 persons during its incursion into southern Israel and took hostages. Israel has been carrying out unprecedented air and ground strikes on Gaza since then, leaving more than 61,000 persons dead. Tel Aviv has also enforced a blockade on humanitarian aid, which the United Nations say has brought the population to the verge of famine. Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks since July 6. Earlier efforts to reinstate a brief ceasefire that took effect in January had stalled due to major disagreements between the two sides.

Durai Vaiko meets Ambassador Alipov over reports on forced conscription of Indians into Russian Army
CHENNAI: MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko has urged Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov to intervene urgently over reports of Indian nationals, including students, being forcibly conscripted into the Russian military. Durai personally handed over a letter to the envoy at his Delhi office. In his letter, Durai cited the case of Tamil Nadu medical student Kishore Saravanan, allegedly taken from Mariupol training to the warfront, and said he is also representing families of 14 other missing Indians. 'These cases suggest that thousands of Indians may have been forced into the war,' he said. Quoting official data, he noted that 31,444 Indian students were in Russia in 2024, including 2,000 from Tamil Nadu, and warned that such incidents could create fear among students and families. In a statement later, Durai said the deputy ambassador assured him that the Russian government does not engage in such activities, attributing such acts to intermediaries in both countries. He added that the envoy confirmed receiving a formal request from the Ministry of External Affairs to secure Kishore's release, and that action is underway.

Having Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID does not prove Indian citizenship: HC
MUMBAI: Mere possession of Indian identity documents does not make anyone a citizen of India, the Bombay high court said on Tuesday while rejecting the bail plea of an alleged Bangladeshi national accused of staying illegally in the country. (Shutterstock) 'Merely having documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, or voter ID does not, by itself, make someone a citizen of India,' justice Amit Borkar said while denying bail to Babu Abdul Ruf Sardar. 'These documents are meant for identification or availing services, but they do not override the basic legal requirements of citizenship as prescribed in the Act (Citizenship Act, 1955).' The Citizenship Act, 1955 lays down five ways of acquiring Indian citizenship – by birth, descent, registration, naturalisation, or incorporation of any new territory into India. Sardar was arrested by the Wagle Estate police in Thane last year allegedly entering India illegally and obtaining Indian identity documents including a passport using fabricated documents. The police later found a digital copy of his birth certificate issued by Bangladeshi authorities on his mobile phone, while his internet protocol detail records (IPDR) and call detail records (CDRs) revealed frequent contact with Bangladesh residents. Sardar had approached the high court for bail, contending that was a bona fide citizen of India and held multiple valid documents issued by competent Indian authorities, such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, and passport. These documents were duly linked with his income tax records and bank accounts. Additionally, he also possessed an udyog Aadhaar, issued to enterprises, and a gumasta license pertaining to his business as a civil contractor, the petition said. In court, Sardar's counsel said that he had been residing in Thane since 2013 and the prosecution had not brought on record any conclusive or reliable evidence to prove that he was a Bangladeshi national. The single judge bench, however, refused to accept his contentions, saying the Citizenship Act, 1955 was the main and controlling law for deciding questions of citizenship. Further, as per section 9 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, if the government placed credible evidence before the court raising reasonable suspicion about a person's citizenship, the burden of proof shifted to the latter, the court said. The single judge bench observed that Sardar had failed to produce any duly verified or authenticated documents which could conclusively establish his Indian citizenship. Identity documents like Aadhaar and PAN could not be treated as sufficient proof of lawful citizenship unless the process through which they were obtained had been verified, the bench said. The investigation against Sardar was at a crucial stage and the allegations against him were serious, involving national security, illegal entry, and use of forged government documents. Thus, the court found it 'neither proper nor prudent to enlarge the applicant on bail at this juncture,' and rejected his bail plea. Ways of acquiring Indian citizenship: The Citizenship Act, 1955 lays down five ways of acquiring Indian citizenship: (i) By birth: Those born in India between January 26, 1950 and July 1, 1987, are deemed Indian citizens by birth. Those born between July 1, 1987 and December 3, 2004 are deemed citizens if at least one parent was an Indian citizen at the time of birth. Those born after December 3, 2004 are deemed citizens when both parents are Indian citizens, or one is a citizen and the other is not an illegal immigrant. (ii) By descent: A person born outside India is deemed a citizen if one parent was an Indian citizen at the time of their birth. If the parent was an Indian citizen by descent only, the person's birth must be registered at an Indian consulate, along with a declaration that they do not hold a foreign passport. (iii) By registration: Certain people, such as persons of Indian origin living in India or abroad, spouses of Indian citizens and minor children of Indian citizens can be registered as citizens. (iv) By naturalisation: A foreign national can get citizenship if they have lived in India for a certain number of years and meet conditions related to age, character, knowledge of an Indian language, and surrender of their old citizenship. (v) By incorporation of territory: If a new territory becomes part of India, the government can decide which of its residents will be given Indian citizenship.
