Prime Video's No. 1 show starring Kevin Bacon has been cancelled after one season

Even reaching the No. 1 spot isn't enough to keep a show off the chopping block these days. Prime Video has pulled the plug on "The Bondsman," its new supernatural action drama starring Kevin Bacon, after just one season, TVLine confirmed this week. The show dethroned "Reacher" in the streamer's top 10 list when all eight episodes of season 1 debuted on April 3. It's remained there ever since, though it's dropped to the No. 2 spot in the U.S. after "Reacher" reclaimed its throne. Now, a little over a month after its premiere, Prime Video has revealed it's opted not to proceed with a second season. The series from Blumhouse Television stars Bacon as Hub Halloran, a washed-up bounty hunter murdered on the job only to be resurrected by the Devil himself to hunt down demons who have escaped Hell. Tracking down Hell's fugitives is a bloody task, but it's his only shot at redemption. As the hunt continues, he must face estranged family, long-buried secrets, and the messy legacy of his time among the living. Threaded throughout is the familiar twang of country music, and the show comes by it honestly: Hub and his ex-wife (Jennifer Nettles) were once a hit duo before things soured. Fans have been calling "The Bondsman" one of Bacon's most entertaining roles in years. He's joined by an all-star ensemble that includes Jolene Purdy ("The White Lotus"), Beth Grant ("The Mindy Project"), Maxwell Jenkins ("Lost in Space") and Damon Herriman ("Justified"). I've been meaning to check it out since it sounds cut from the same cloth as one of my favorite guilty pleasure movie series, "R.I.P.D." Reading my colleague Alix Blackburn's assessment of "The Bondsman" had me sold when she called it "part horror, part dark comedy, part Southern Gothic fever dream, and somehow, it works." She's far from the only one who enjoyed Prime Video's latest supernatural outing. Season 1 earned a respectable 83% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it a similarly solid 77% rating. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Reviews alone weren't enough to convince Prime Video to order up a second season, though. Exactly why Amazon pulled the plug remains unclear, but considering how many people are still tuning in, I'm sure many will be disheartened to learn there won't be more once they finish binge-watching the first season. C'est la vie in this era of streaming we're in.

Kevin Bacon hit with shock career blow

The Bondsman, starring Golden Globe-winning actor Kevin Bacon, has been cancelled by Prime Video after one season. The blow to the 66-year-old Hollywood vet's career was announced by Deadline on Friday, and it came one day after he took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at the show. All eight half-hour episodes of the Blumhouse Television series came out on April 3 following a SXSW premiere. According to the outlet, the Bondsman earned a spot on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings in its premiere week, sitting at number nine on the Originals chart with 563 million viewing minutes. But by its second week on the streamer, The Bondsman had tumbled off the chart altogether. However, the show has stayed on Prime Video's Top 10 list, holding the number five slot in the US. Despite impressing critics and viewers and averaging 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has not been able to create momentum online. The short-lived program followed resurrected bounty hunter Hub Halloran, who 'gets an unexpected second chance at life, love and his nearly forgotten musical career —only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist,' according to an IMDb synopsis. Bacon engaged his Instagram audience of 4.6 million this week, sharing a video showing how makeup artists apply his character's tattoos and scars. He captioned the post, 'TV magic: Hub's tattoos in #TheBondsman.' Kevin has been married to wife Kyra Sedgwick since 1988. They're parents to 33-year-old daughter Sosie and 35-year-old son Travis. The movie star used social media to give a shoutout to his spouse on Mother's Day, sharing throwback photos of her with their kids and writing, 'I'll take any excuse to celebrate you. Happy Mother's Day @kyrasedgwickofficial, I love you and our family.' While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in April, the proud husband revealed he first met his wife when she was just 12-years-old and he was 19. It happened in 1978 when they first crossed paths as young actors. He recalled, 'I will tell you that I was doing a lot of Off-Broadway, many years before that. I was 19 so she was 12, I think. 'Her mom had seen me in some plays Off-Broadway, and she knew that little 12-year-old Kyra wanted to be an actor.' Sedgwick's mom bought tickets to attend one of his shows, and they ran into him while he was on a lunch break. 'I was buying a sandwich in the deli around the corner. This 12-year-old girl came up and said, "Hi, I liked you in the play."' The couple met for the second time in 1987 when they were cast in the movie Lemon Sky.

‘The Bondsman' Canceled By Prime Video After One Season

Prime Video has opted not to proceed with a second season of its supernatural action drama The Bondsman starring Kevin Bacon. The news comes more than a month after all eight half-hour episodes of the series, from showrunner Erik Oleson and Blumhouse Television, dropped on April 3 after a premiere at SXSW. In a promising sign, The Bondsman made the Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings in its premiere week, coming in at #9 on the Originals chart with 563 million minutes of viewing. More from Deadline J.R. Ramirez Joins Erinn Hayes & Scott Foley In Amazon's 'It's Not Like That' 'Elle' Casts James Van Der Beek In 'Legally Blonde' Prequel For Prime Video Comedian Kountry Wayne Sets Sophomore Special At Prime Video By its second week, The Bondsman had dropped off the Nielsen ranks. It has remained on Prime Video's platform Top 10 list, currently at #5 in the U.S. It also has scored high with critics and viewers, averaging 83% on Rotten Tomatoes but has failed to generate buzz on social media. In The Bondsman, murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Bacon) is resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell. By chasing down those demons with the help and hinderance of his estranged family, Hub learns how his own sins got his soul condemned — which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and country music. The series is from Blumhouse Television, Marker 96 and CrimeThink Production Company. Executive producers included Oleson, who also served as showrunner, Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie and Chris McCumber for Blumhouse Television, Bacon, Paul E. Shapiro as well as Grainger David, who created the series. Erik Holmberg served as co-executive producer. One of the most mind-twisting sci-fi thriller movies is streaming free on Prime Video — and it's like a lost episode of ‘Black Mirror'

I'm the type of person who loves messaging my friends and family about a great movie I've just seen, as I find it very satisfying recommending hidden flicks that haven't gained much recognition. After watching 'Black Box,' I found myself sitting in silence, my mind racing to make sense of everything I had just experienced. It's not often a movie lingers in my thoughts like that, enough for me to not reach my phone. 'Black Box' is available to stream for free on Prime Video and it's one I have to talk about. This movie centers on a man struggling to rebuild his life after a traumatic accident that erases his memory. As he seeks out an experimental treatment, his world starts to blur. It's a haunting concept that will feel eerily familiar to 'Black Mirror' fans. This dark thriller was actually brought to life by Jason Blum and the Blumhouse Television team, making it part of Amazon's 'Welcome to the Blumhouse' anthology series. Honestly, 'Black Box' stands out as one of the strongest in the bunch. If you're in the mood for a mind-bending sci-fi thriller, 'Black Box' is a must-watch, and there's no excuse considering it's free to stream. Yes, you don't need a Prime subscription, just an Amazon account. So, here's everything to know about 'Black Box' and why you should add it to your watchlist. 'Black Box' follows Nolan Wright (Mamoudou Athie), a man who loses his wife and suffers severe amnesia after a car accident. Struggling with memory loss and unable to care for his young daughter, Ava (Amanda Christine), Nolan seeks out an experimental treatment to restore his memories. He is introduced to Dr. Lillian Brooks (Phyllis Logan), who uses a cutting-edge device known as the 'Black Box' to help patients recover lost memories. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As Nolan undergoes the treatment, he begins to experience strange and unsettling visions. His memories seem distorted, and he struggles to separate reality from the hallucinations brought on by the device. The more he unravels about his past, the more he begins to question his identity and his role in the accident that changed his life. 'Black Box' is one of those movies that really gets under your skin, and I mean that in the best way possible. The story starts out with a man named Nolan who's struggling with memory loss after a horrific accident. He's given the chance to regain his memories through a high-tech procedure, but from the moment he steps into the experiment, you can tell things are off. At first, it seems like a straightforward sci-fi thriller, but the deeper Nolan goes into his past, the more unsettling everything becomes, and eventually it feels like a lost 'Black Mirror' episode. Director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour really knows how to create tension, which is the one aspect that kept me hooked. I mean it when I say my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time. One particularly effective moment in 'Black Box' comes when Nolan is testing his memory with a new piece of technology. He's hooked up to a device that's supposed to help trigger his recollections, but instead of unlocking memories, it triggers a terrifying visual distortion that turns this movie into a visually compelling experience. And honestly, it's one of the calmer moments compared to what follows. Over the course of 100 minutes, Nolan's confusion becomes your confusion. You're never quite sure if he's remembering things correctly, or if the memories are being manipulated. The movie doesn't rush to give you answers either so you have no choice but to watch and find them yourself. Mamoudou Athie makes this movie work because his quiet vulnerability makes you immediately care about what he's going through, and why he makes the decision to seek experimental treatment. While there are some intense moments, it's the quieter scenes that leave a bigger impact. This is especially true in one scene when Nolan is simply trying to help his daughter with homework and forgets a basic word like 'shoe,' which speaks volumes about how deep his memory issues go. 'Black Box' is definitely predictable for the most part, and you might come close to guessing the plot twist at the end. But it's the build-up to that point that makes it worth your time. It's a slow burn that focuses on being a character study first, but when things finally start clicking into place, it's a gut punch. If you're in the mood for a dark sci-fi thriller that's intense enough to hold your attention, 'Black Box' is one to add to your Prime Video watchlist, especially if you're looking for something to fill the void after 'Black Mirror' season 7. With a strong central performance from Athie and a gripping story packed with twists, 'Black Box' proves that a low-budget concept can pack a punch in ways you don't expect. Plus, the fact that it's available for free on Prime Video makes it an easy pick for your next weekend watch. For more streaming recommendations, see what's new on Prime Video in May 2025. The Best Movies and TV Shows Coming to Disney+, Amazon, Max, Apple TV+ and More in April

Every month, streaming services add movies and TV shows to their libraries. Here are our picks for some of April's most promising new titles. (Note: Streaming services occasionally change schedules without giving notice. For more recommendations on what to stream, sign up for our Watching newsletter here .) 'The Bondsman' Season 1 Starts streaming: April 3 Kevin Bacon plays the hard-boiled Georgia bounty hunter Hub Halloran in this action-comedy, which has a supernatural twist. Hub dies in the opening scene of the first episode, then gets reincarnated thanks to some satanic intervention. He is then given a new job, hunting demons who have escaped from Hell. Created by Grainger David and produced and written by Erik Oleson for the horror-friendly Blumhouse Television, 'The Bondsman' features all the gory splatter one might expect from a show about a heavily armed monster-killer. But the series also explores its undead antihero's complicated personal life, which involves a an ex-wife, Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles), whose budding country music career is being handled by a highly suspicious creep named Lucky (Damon Herriman). 'Étoile' Season 1 Starts streaming: April 24 The writer-producer husband-wife team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino — best-known for 'Gilmore Girls' and 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' — are back with a new series, set in the world of dance, just like their short-lived gem 'Bunheads.' Luke Kirby plays the leader of a venerable New York ballet company. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the leader of a venerable Paris ballet company. When their organizations struggle, they decide to generate some public interest by swapping their top stars. 'Étoile' generates comedy and drama from the very different theatrical cultures in Europe and America. The supporting cast is filled with professional dancers, so the ballet sequences should be realistic and dynamic — and not just something to fill the space between the creators' usual fast-paced, witty banter. Also arriving: April 1 'America's Test Kitchen: The Next Generation' Season 2 April 8 'Spy High' April 10 'G20' April 17 '#1 Happy Family USA' Season 1 'Leverage Redemption' Season 3 Jon Hamm in 'Your Friends & Neighbors,' Season 1. Credit... Jessica Kourkounis/Apple TV+ 'Your Friends and Neighbors' Season 1 Starts streaming: April 11 In this offbeat crime drama, Jon Hamm plays Andrew Cooper, a.k.a. Coop, a swaggering New York money manager who loses everything — including his wife and job — and compensates by becoming a gentleman thief, stealing from his wealthy pals. The show emphasizes the ironic fragility of Coop's situation, as someone who has lived and socialized with some of the richest people in the United States, yet is suddenly on the verge of going broke. Created by Jonathan Tropper ('Banshee,' 'Warrior'), 'Your Friends and Neighbors' is about the high-end homes that only some people can access, and about how someone who is trusted enough to be let inside can treat these personal spaces like an A.T.M.
