Prime Video's No. 1 show starring Kevin Bacon has been cancelled after one season
Even reaching the No. 1 spot isn't enough to keep a show off the chopping block these days. Prime Video has pulled the plug on "The Bondsman," its new supernatural action drama starring Kevin Bacon, after just one season, TVLine confirmed this week.
The show dethroned "Reacher" in the streamer's top 10 list when all eight episodes of season 1 debuted on April 3. It's remained there ever since, though it's dropped to the No. 2 spot in the U.S. after "Reacher" reclaimed its throne. Now, a little over a month after its premiere, Prime Video has revealed it's opted not to proceed with a second season.
The series from Blumhouse Television stars Bacon as Hub Halloran, a washed-up bounty hunter murdered on the job only to be resurrected by the Devil himself to hunt down demons who have escaped Hell. Tracking down Hell's fugitives is a bloody task, but it's his only shot at redemption.
As the hunt continues, he must face estranged family, long-buried secrets, and the messy legacy of his time among the living. Threaded throughout is the familiar twang of country music, and the show comes by it honestly: Hub and his ex-wife (Jennifer Nettles) were once a hit duo before things soured.
Fans have been calling "The Bondsman" one of Bacon's most entertaining roles in years. He's joined by an all-star ensemble that includes Jolene Purdy ("The White Lotus"), Beth Grant ("The Mindy Project"), Maxwell Jenkins ("Lost in Space") and Damon Herriman ("Justified").
I've been meaning to check it out since it sounds cut from the same cloth as one of my favorite guilty pleasure movie series, "R.I.P.D." Reading my colleague Alix Blackburn's assessment of "The Bondsman" had me sold when she called it "part horror, part dark comedy, part Southern Gothic fever dream, and somehow, it works."
She's far from the only one who enjoyed Prime Video's latest supernatural outing. Season 1 earned a respectable 83% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it a similarly solid 77% rating.

Reviews alone weren't enough to convince Prime Video to order up a second season, though. Exactly why Amazon pulled the plug remains unclear, but considering how many people are still tuning in, I'm sure many will be disheartened to learn there won't be more once they finish binge-watching the first season. C'est la vie in this era of streaming we're in.

Watch: Prime Video highlights 'We Were Liars' in teaser for June slate
June 2 (UPI) -- Prime Video is teasing the mystery thriller We Were Liars. The teen drama is part of the streamer's June slate of releases previewed in a video Sunday. "Once upon a time, there was a mythical land where it was always summer," a voice says as the trailer begins. Viewers see Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and Gat Patil (Shubham Maheshwari) in an outdoor shower together, during an apparent beach day. The series, adapted from E. Lockhart's novel, follows Cadence and the Liars, which is the name given to "her tight-knit inner circle," according to an official synopsis. As the preview continues, it becomes apparent that the series is not a summer romance story after all. "After a mysterious accident changes Cadence's life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide," the description reads. Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli and David Morse also star in the series, which arrives on Prime Video June 18. The streamer also highlighted BMF Season 4, which premieres June 6, American Thunder: NASCAR to LeMans and Deep Cover, both of which debut June 12, and Echo Valley, which arrives June 13. Season 5 of The Chosen: Last Supper premieres June 15 and Countdown premieres June 25. Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, lands on the streamer June 3, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives June 17, and Nosferatu arrives June 24.

This inspirational sports biopic just crashed the Prime Video top 10 — and it's 93% on Rotten Tomatoes
Prime Video looks to have another hit on its hands with "The Fire Inside." Despite only coming to the platform a few days ago, it's already climbed into the Prime Video top 10 list. If you've not seen it before, "The Fire Inside" is a biopic about American professional boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields that was directed by Rachel Morrison (in her feature directorial debut) and written by Barry Jenkins ("Moonlight," "The Underground Railroad"). "The Fire Inside" might not have made a splash at the box office, but it was released to critical acclaim. Over on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, you'll see it's Certified Fresh, with a 93% critics score and an equally impressive 94% on the Popcornmeter. The movie came to Prime Video on May 27, and in the days since, it's risen through the ranks to claim 5th place on the Prime Video top 10. That's quite the feat, given it's behind the likes of "Another Simple Favor", "Twisters", and "Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning." Trying to decide whether to stream "The Fire Inside" on Prime Video? Here's a little more info about the trending movie, and a round-up of what people have had to say about the streamer's new arrival. "The Fire Inside" is a sports biopic based on the early career of American professional boxer, Claressa "T-Rex" Shields (here played by Ryan Destiny). Given that glowing reaction, I couldn't help but check it out for myself, and I'm inclined to agree; "The Fire Inside" gets my recommendation, too. Morrison's movie absolutely is a rousing watch, one that shines a light on Claressa's achievements with some solid in-ring action, but also worth sticking with for the grounded drama that follows her 2012 Olympic victory.
