Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam undergoes surgery after knee injury at Bells Beach
After injuring his knee at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach held in April in Australia, Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam has undergone surgery and begun the long road to recovery. In an Instagram post shared with his fans and followers on Wednesday, he announced that he had «TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgery», a procedure where the bony prominence at the front of the tibia (shin bone) is moved forward and secured in its new position. «After six weeks of waiting, my knee was finally ready for surgery», he wrote, adding, «It ended up being a bit more complicated than expected, but I was ready to face it». Boukhiam, who had the surgery at a sports clinic in Mérignac, France, said his «rehabilitation hasn't started yet, but the road to recovery begins now», promising to share updates along the way. His knee injury happened just after the first-round heat of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, as he was paddling back to shore. «My leg got stuck in the reef and a wave broke right behind me», he explained on Instagram. «Getting a major injury, again, and during a contest I felt so ready for, just breaks me», he sadly shared right after the incident. Boukhiam, who had to withdraw from the event, said the injury hit him hard. «With everything I've already been through, it honestly hits deep».

Ramzi Boukhiam suffers 'major' knee injury at Bells Beach while leaving the water after his heat
A freak accident at Bells Beach has forced Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam out of the Rip Curl Pro with a serious knee injury. Boukhiam did not surf his elimination-round heat on Tuesday afternoon after the accident, putting him out of the competition. He went to hospital for scans using crutches and with his left knee in a brace. The 31-year-old had finished his opening-round heat earlier on Tuesday and was nearly on the beach when his foot was apparently caught in the reef close to the shoreline. Footage showed Boukhiam then hit by a wave and he collapsed on to his board in agony. "He'd just finished the wave and was waiting for the score — I saw him walking and then he went into the rock," Ferreira told the event broadcast. "The other wave came at the back and hit him … [he said] 'I'm gone, I'm gone' — something happened and I started to run. Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam had to be helped from the water by fellow competitions including Australian Xavier Huxtable and left the beach in a medicab after wrenching his knee as he walked to shore when the men's heats finally got going at Bells Beach. Every one of the seven Australian men competing at the Easter classic made it through to the round of 32 on a big day which included 10 men's heats as well as the women's elimination rounds. The window for the event lasts until April 28 giving organisers enough time to get through what remains a lot of surfing to find the latest champions. But Boukhaim's event ended earlier than he'd hoped due to a bad knee injury. After surfing in the sixth heat the Moroccan was making his way back to the beach over some rocks when he was wiped out by a wave. He immediately grabbed at his left knee, writhing in pain, and had to be helped from the water before sitting on the beach as he waited for some medical treatment. Eventually Boukhiam, who was last in his heat and sits outside the mid-season cut line, was escorted from the beach in the medical before limping, on crutches, into the medical suite high above the sand. 'He finished the wave and was waiting for the score,' World No.1 Italo Ferreira, who was also in the heat and first on the scene, said. 'He was walking across the rock and the wave hit him from behind. The knee came to the inside and he felt something strong and was screaming, 'I'm done, I'm done.'' He was sent for scans to assess the full extent of the injury. The incident came as surfing resumed for the first time since Good Friday when only the women's opening round and one heat of the men's first round were run. With better conditions on hand, Australian guns Robinson and Morgan Cibilic both won their heats to progress to the round of 32 with Huxtable also progressing. Joel Vaughan, who finished last in his heat, also progressed to the next round, courtesy of Boukhiam's injury, which meant the elimination clash was a walkover. Molly Picklum, Sally Fitzgibbons, Isabel Nicholls, former Bells champ Tyler Wright and local Ellie Harrison will all fly the Australian flag when the women's round of 16 resumes, with Wright and Harrison to go head-to-head for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Bells Beach shifted from an Easter surf celebration to a scene of heartbreak as Moroccan surfing star Ramzi Boukhiam suffered a serious knee injury during the first round of the Rip Curl Pro on Tuesday. The incident occurred during the sixth heat of the day as competition resumed after a three-day break due to poor conditions. Surfing against Brazilian Italo Ferreira and local wildcard Xavier Huxtable, Boukhiam was walking across the rocky shoreline after completing his final wave when disaster struck. A sudden surge caught him from behind, forcing his knee into an awkward inward bend. 'It looked fairly pedestrian, but ended awkward,' a witness said. 'He got folded. Knee twisted.' Ferreira, the current World No. 1, was first to reach Boukhiam. 'He was walking across the rock and the wave hit him from behind,' Ferreira said. 'The knee came to the inside and he felt something strong and was screaming, 'I'm done, I'm done.' In clear pain, Boukhiam clutched at his knee and screamed, unable to stand. Fellow competitors, including Huxtable, rushed to help and pulled him from the water. He sat on the beach for several minutes while awaiting medical attention, visibly grimacing and unable to move his leg. Eventually, he was placed on crutches and limped into the medical suite high above the Bells Beach sand. He was later transported by medical team for offsite scans, with early signs pointing to a serious injury. 'Likely offsite scans are next,' confirmed WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. 'He stepped into the reef and his legs got stuck as the wave broke behind him.' Boukhiam's injury comes at a crucial point in his season. Currently ranked 27th, five places below the mid-season cut, his hopes of continuing in the Championship Tour are now in serious doubt. This isn't his first injury setback. As a rookie, he missed the start of the season after blowing his ankle at Backdoor, with his wildcard then going to another injured surfer, Carlos Munoz. He only returned to the tour this year after Joao Chianca's head injury at Pipeline opened up an injury replacement spot. On Tuesday, as Boukhiam's season hung in the balance, the rest of the competition pushed ahead in tricky four-to-six-foot conditions. Jordy Smith continued his strong form, winning his round-one heat with a score of 12.54. Australian George Pittar finished second in the same heat to also progress, while Brazil's Samuel Pupo won another heat with a 12.00 score. Despite onshore winds making the lineup challenging, organisers were determined to make up for lost time after the Easter weekend lull. 'Conditions aren't ideal today, but we have plenty of waves for the first time since day one of the window,' said Miley-Dyer said. 'We're expecting some great surfing as the tide continues to drop on the Bowl.'
