See the excruciating moment surfing star Ramzi Boukhiam writhes in agony as he has to be rescued at Bells Beach after shocking injury

Daily Mail22-04-2025
Bells Beach shifted from an Easter surf celebration to a scene of heartbreak as Moroccan surfing star Ramzi Boukhiam suffered a serious knee injury during the first round of the Rip Curl Pro on Tuesday.
The incident occurred during the sixth heat of the day as competition resumed after a three-day break due to poor conditions.
Surfing against Brazilian Italo Ferreira and local wildcard Xavier Huxtable, Boukhiam was walking across the rocky shoreline after completing his final wave when disaster struck.
A sudden surge caught him from behind, forcing his knee into an awkward inward bend.
'It looked fairly pedestrian, but ended awkward,' a witness said. 'He got folded. Knee twisted.'
Ferreira, the current World No. 1, was first to reach Boukhiam.
'He was walking across the rock and the wave hit him from behind,' Ferreira said. 'The knee came to the inside and he felt something strong and was screaming, 'I'm done, I'm done.'
In clear pain, Boukhiam clutched at his knee and screamed, unable to stand.
Fellow competitors, including Huxtable, rushed to help and pulled him from the water.
He sat on the beach for several minutes while awaiting medical attention, visibly grimacing and unable to move his leg.
Eventually, he was placed on crutches and limped into the medical suite high above the Bells Beach sand.
He was later transported by medical team for offsite scans, with early signs pointing to a serious injury.
'Likely offsite scans are next,' confirmed WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. 'He stepped into the reef and his legs got stuck as the wave broke behind him.'
Boukhiam's injury comes at a crucial point in his season.
Currently ranked 27th, five places below the mid-season cut, his hopes of continuing in the Championship Tour are now in serious doubt.
This isn't his first injury setback. As a rookie, he missed the start of the season after blowing his ankle at Backdoor, with his wildcard then going to another injured surfer, Carlos Munoz.
He only returned to the tour this year after Joao Chianca's head injury at Pipeline opened up an injury replacement spot.
On Tuesday, as Boukhiam's season hung in the balance, the rest of the competition pushed ahead in tricky four-to-six-foot conditions.
Jordy Smith continued his strong form, winning his round-one heat with a score of 12.54.
Australian George Pittar finished second in the same heat to also progress, while Brazil's Samuel Pupo won another heat with a 12.00 score.
Despite onshore winds making the lineup challenging, organisers were determined to make up for lost time after the Easter weekend lull.
'Conditions aren't ideal today, but we have plenty of waves for the first time since day one of the window,' said Miley-Dyer said.
'We're expecting some great surfing as the tide continues to drop on the Bowl.'

Celtic left with plenty to do after goalless stalemate with Kairat Almaty

However, with Yang Hyun-jun on for Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda moving to centre forward at the start of the second half, Celtic stepped up the pace and piled on the pressure in the later stages but could not find a way through despite 10 added minutes. After Saturday's home William Hill Premiership game against Livingston, Celtic will get ready for the return leg in Kazakhstan next Tuesday night which involves a 7,000-mile round trip knowing qualification requires perhaps more work than many anticipated. Much of the build-up to the game was centred on if and when Rodgers would add to his squad for the European campaign. There were no late signings, but Rodgers made six changes to his side, with Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Reo Hatate, Benjamin Nygren and Idah returning and Viljami Sinisalo, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Johnny Kenny dropping out. Rafael Urazbakhtin stressed his side were playing for the glory of Kazakhstan and the Kairat head coach was pinning a lot of hopes on 17-year-old Chelsea-bound Dastan Satpayev. Celtic's Alistair Johnston is placed on to a stretcher by medical staff (Andrew Milligan/PA) The visitors settled early and in the 11th minute captain Aleksandr Martynovich had the ball in the Hoops net from close range but was offside. With Satpayev influential, Kairat attacked fluidly and at pace on the counter, dampening the mood of the expectant home support. In the 32nd minute, Celtic defender Alastair Johnston pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury as he backtracked and was taken from the field on a stretcher, replaced by Anthony Ralston. Moments later, Kairat goalkeeper Alexandr Zarutskiy saved from Maeda when Celtic at last got through, but at the other end Ofri Arad's powerful drive flew just wide of Schmeichel's post. Temirlan Anarbekov wore a protective cap after sustaining a knock (Andrew Milligan/PA) Yang for Idah for the start of the second period and Maeda moving central was no surprise and within a minute Yang set up James Forrest, whose shot was touched onto a post and then gathered by Zarutskiy. In the 58th minute, after some sloppiness by Carter-Vickers in the Hoops defence, Brazilian striker Edmilson tried a speculative shot from 40 yards and it landed on the roof of Schmeichel's goal. Celtic's corner count mounted but to no avail and Hoops fans – perhaps also frustrated by a lack of transfer activity – began singing 'sack the board' as the game moved into the final quarter. In the 75th minute, after sustaining an injury defending a corner, Zarutskiy had to be replaced by understudy Temirlan Anarbekov and he had his head bandaged and covered by a protective cap after taking a knock. The visitors, though, were wasting time at every opportunity and 10 added minutes gave Celtic scope, but Maeda spurned a gift when he ran through alone and could only manage a tame shot which was easily saved by Anarbekov and there were boos at the end from irate supporters.

Russell Martin has also said goodbye to several first team players as well, with another star now heading for the exit door too. 3 Jefte has completed a switch back to his homeland Credit: Willie Vass 3 Russell Martin alongside Danilo and Jefte at full-time Credit: SNS 3 Jefte in action against Viktoria Plzen Credit: Getty Brazilian left-back Jefte is officially the latest Rangers player to leave the club - to complete a stunning move back to his homeland. The 21-year-old has been in talks over a proposed return to Brazil for a number of days, after giants Palmeiras made him their number one transfer target this month. It was revealed the Brazilian outfit were keen on signing the full-back in a"multi-million pound deal - despite a struggling start to his season in Glasgow this summer. He didn't paint himself in the best light against Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic and was at fault for their opening goal in the second leg. But in the aftermath of that disappointing display, the news of Palmeiras' interest continued to ramp up. Jefte was then REMOVED from Rangers' European squad with Martin confirming over the weekend that he had travelled to Brazil. And now, the Sao Paulo outfit have sealed the deal. SunSport understands the Gers have raked-in a huge £6.5million fee for the left-back. That sees the Gers bank a healthy profit on a player they spent just £800,000 on a year ago. In a brief statement online, the Ibrox club said: "Rangers Football Club can today confirm the departure of Jefté to Palmeiras for an undisclosed fee. Rangers MISS OUT on top striker target as failures of loan strategy exposed "The 21-year-old, who joined the club in May 2024, made 56 appearances for Rangers during his time in Glasgow. "Everyone at Rangers thanks Jefté for his contribution while at the club, and we wish him well for his future career." Russell Martin added a left-back reinforcement last weekend. Jayden Meghoma joined on loan from Brentford and was thrust into the action from the start against Club Brugge on Tuesday night. With Ridvan Yilmaz also looking likely to leave Rangers, the Light Blues could look to go back into the market for another player in the position. A statement from Rangers released on Wednesday night said: 'We can today confirm the departure of Jefté to Palmeiras for an undisclosed fee.
