Incredibles 3 Gets New Director, Why Brad Bird Isn't Directing Revealed

Pixar's Incredibles 3 has found a new director, with Disney revealing that a new filmmaker will step behind the camera for the next entry in the iconic Disney franchise. Who is the new Incredibles 3 director? According to a report from THR, Peter Sohn — the director behind Elemental and The Good Dinosaur — will direct the third installment in the Incredibles franchise. Advertisement Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films, is still on board to write the third movie. However, Bird will not be directing this film, and it seems as if his schedule is keeping him from directing the third movie. He's currently in pre-production on Ray Gunn, a movie for Skydance. The franchise originally began in 2004, with the first movie following a family of superheroes trying to hide their powers and live a normal life. Advertisement The first film was a major success for Disney and Pixar, earning over $600 million at the global box office. 14 years later, a sequel to the film was released, which dealt with the family of superheroes now trying to restore the public's trust in superheroes. That movie was also a massive hit, and made over $1.2 billion at the global box office. The Incredibles franchise has largely starred Craig T. Nelson as Robert 'Bob' Parr/Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Helen Parr/Elastigirl/Mrs. Incredible, Sarah Vowell as Violet Parr, Spencer Fox and Huckleberry Milner as Dashiell 'Dash' Parr, Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best/Frozone, and Brad Bird as Edna 'E' Mode. After Pixar's Incredibles 3 Confirms A Major Change, I'm Actually More Excited For The Movie

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I was in the audience at D23 last summer when Pixar CCO Pete Docter confirmed that Brad Bird was already at work developing Incredibles 3. There was, unsurprisingly, a lot of applause following that announcement. The Incredibles is one of Pixar's most beloved films. Incredibles 2 was the top-grossing Pixar movie ever made until Inside Out 2 dethroned it last summer. I like both Incredibles films, but I have to admit I wasn't overwhelmed with excitement that Incredibles 3 was on the way. There was no reason to believe it wouldn't be a solid film, but I just found it less interesting than doing something new or even making a sequel to a film that hadn't already received one. But now I'm a bit more curious about Incredibles 3 because it will be different from the previous films in a big way. Today, THR broke the news that while Brad Bird will write and produce Incredibles 3, he will not direct the movie, as he had done with each of the previous Incredibles franchise entries. Instead, directing duties will be handled by Peter Sohn, who most recently directed Pixar's Elemental. While it had been widely assumed that Bird would direct the movie, it had never been specifically stated by Pixar. Perhaps that had even been the plan at one point. Bird does have other projects he's directing, including Ray Gunn for Netflix. It's possible Bird just didn't have the time in his schedule. Bird and Docter reportedly jointly selected Sohn as the man who should direct the new film. But now you have my attention. My love for Elemental is well known to frequent CinemaBlend readers. I think it's the best movie Pixar has made in a long time. Pixar has always been good at turning things without consciousness into living things that we care about and cry over. But in Elemental, we saw those characters fall in love, and the movie let a single relationship carry the weight of the entire story. If Peter Sohn can do that with fire and water, then I have high hopes that he can do even more with characters that are actually human. It might be just enough of a different vibe to an Incredibles movie that it feels unique and not simply like it's another of the same movie for the third time. Fans of Brad Bird need not worry. He's still writing the film, so one assumes the final script, the plot, the dialogue, etc, will be mostly his work. It will still be Bird's story, and Sohn has been one of his long-time collaborator. Sohn began his professional career as an animator on The Iron Giant and has contributed to every film Bird has made for Pixar, including both previous Incredibles movies. If there's another person capable of bringing Brad Bird's work to life properly, it's probably Peter Sohn. The fact that a director has been slotted indicates that Incredibles 3 is probably getting ready to shift into more of a production status, though the movie is probably at least a couple of years away at least. Still, I'm looking forward to when that day comes more now than I was before.

Peter Sohn hails being chosen to direct The Incredibles 3 as ‘dream come true'

Peter Sohn has described being chosen to direct The Incredibles 3 as 'a dream come true'. The 47-year-old filmmaker is known for Elementals, and helming the new movie marks a major milestone in his two-decade career with its maker Pixar. He was quoted in Variety saying about working with the company on the third Incredibles movie: 'I've always loved this family and what they represent — the messy, funny, heroic chaos of everyday life. To help tell their next chapter is a true honour.' The Incredibles 3 was announced at Disney's D23 Expo in late summer 2024. It will be the first entry in the series not helmed by Brad Bird, 66, who directed and wrote both the original 2004 film and its 2018 sequel. But Brad will remain on board as a producer and screenwriter for the third movie in The Incredibles franchise. He is currently attached to two other projects — the science fiction film Ray Gunn for Skydance and the historical drama 1906 for Disney. The Incredibles films follow Bob and Helen Parr, known to the world as Mr Incredible and Elastigirl, as they juggle family life with saving the world. In the first film, the couple tries to maintain a quiet suburban existence after the government outlaws superheroes. And the sequel focuses on the family's efforts to rehabilitate the public image of costumed heroes while battling a dangerous new cybercriminal. The Incredibles earned $630 million at the box office globally, while Incredibles 2 brought in $1.24 billion, becoming one of Pixar's highest-grossing releases. A full voice cast has not yet been confirmed for The Incredibles 3, and Disney has released no further plot details or a release date. The previous films featured performances from Craig T. Nelson, 80, Holly Hunter, 66, and Samuel L Jackson, 76. Peter Sohn's 2023 movie Elemental became a sleeper hit with nearly $500 million in global box office earnings. He has worked on numerous Pixar titles in roles ranging from artist to director, including Finding Nemo, Up, Wall-E, as well as the first two Incredibles films. Peter said to Variety about the prospect of working with Brad Bird on The Incredibles 3: 'Brad has been such a mentor to me. 'Working with him on the first two films shaped my whole approach to storytelling. To now be collaborating with him again, but in this new way, is both surreal and incredibly exciting.' Further announcements about the film are expected later this year.

Peter Sohn to Direct Pixar's THE INCREDIBLES 3 as Brad Bird Steps Aside — GeekTyrant

Disney and Pixar are officially moving forward with The Incredibles 3 , and for the first time in the series, Brad Bird won't be in the director's chair. Instead, longtime Pixar veteran Peter Sohn, fresh off the success of Elemental , will take the helm. Sohn has been part of the Pixar family for decades, contributing in various roles on The Incredibles , Incredibles 2 , Finding Nemo , Up , and Wall-E . Most recently, he directed Elemental , which quietly climbed to nearly $500 million at the global box office after a soft start. Sohn's ability to craft emotional, character-driven stories makes him a natural fit for the Parr family's next chapter. As for Bird, while he won't be directing this time around, he's still very much involved and will be credited as both screenwriter and producer. It's not confirmed why Bird stepped aside, but Bird has a couple of other projects brewing, including the sci-fi noir Ray Gunn with Skydance and the long-gestating historical epic 1906 at Disney. The Incredibles franchise has been one of Pixar's crown jewels. The original 2004 film introduced us to Bob and Helen Parr (a.k.a. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl), their super-powered kids, and a suburban life constantly disrupted by villainy. Disney first confirmed development on the third installment during its D23 Expo in late summer 2024. No release date or story details have been shared yet, but Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to return. While fans might miss Bird's directorial touch, Sohn's jumping on the project signals a promising new direction. He knows the characters, he knows the world, and with Bird still on board creatively, Incredibles 3 looks to be in solid hands. More to come as this one powers up. Source: Variety

Elemental's Peter Sohn to direct Incredibles 3, here's what we know about Pixar film so far

There is an exciting update for Incredibles fans! The director for the third instalment of the franchise has now been confirmed. According to a report by TheWrap, Peter Sohn is taking over from Brad Bird, who directed the first two films. Brad Bird remains part of the project as a writer and producer. Also on board is Dana Murray, known for her work on Soul, who is producing the film. Peter Sohn is known for directing The Good Dinosaur (2015) and Elemental (2023). He has also worked as an animator on films like Osmosis Jones, Ratatouille and the first Incredibles movie. Incredibles 3, produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, was announced at D23 in August last year. Few details were shared then beyond the fact that Brad Bird was developing the third instalment in the superhero franchise. The Incredibles began in 2004 with the release of the first film. The critically acclaimed film follows the story of the Parr family: Bob (Mr. Incredible), Helen (Elastigirl) and their three children, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. All of them secretly possess superpowers. Set in a world where superheroes are forced to live normal lives after being banned, the story takes a thrilling turn when Bob is lured into a trap by a villain named Syndrome. The film brilliantly blends action, humour and heart. The Incredibles won Best Animated Feature and Best Sound Editing at the 77th Academy Awards. Fourteen years later, Incredibles 2 (2018) picked up right where the first film left off. This time, Helen takes centre stage to fight crime and restore the public's faith in superheroes, while Bob stays home to care for the kids. He navigates teenage mood swings, school troubles and Jack-Jack's emerging powers. While Incredibles 3 has been confirmed, the official release date is yet to be announced. Incredibles 3 will be directed by Peter Sohn, known for directing The Good Dinosaur and Elemental. Disney officially announced that Incredibles 3 was in development at the D23 Expo in August last year. The official release date has not yet been announced.
