Jets Coach Reveals Offense Will Be 'Hunting' Under Tanner Engstrand

Jets Coach Reveals Offense Will Be 'Hunting' Under Tanner Engstrand originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets' offense last season left a lot to be desired, and now, with a new player and coaching staff, things are changing. Advertisement Tanner Engstrand is in as offensive coordinator, with Justin Fields leading his unit, which has some question marks over it, especially at the receiver position. Only Garrett Wilson as the main target, with Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard behind him, isn't considered a top trio, but there is one thing the Jets have in their favor. Breece Hall and Braelon Allen as a one-two punch out of the backfield is a nice thing to have, plus an offensive line that is considered one of the more talented units in football. Still, what the Jets want to do overall on offense was a little bit of a now. Advertisement Passing game coordinator Scott Turner gave a little insight into what to expect in 2025. "It's going to be a physical system," Turner said via ESPN. "We're going to run the football, we're going to be aggressive up front and try to chase explosive plays [in the passing game]. ... That's what we're going to be hunting." Justin Fields And The JetsBy Tony Fisher With Hall, Allen, and Fields as running threats, it does make sense to be a run-first offense, particularly with the offensive line the Jets have. It is up to Engstrand to bring that vision to life, and he has the pieces to do so. The offseason looms as a key foundational building phase for the Jets under head coach Aaron Glenn, and the offense is likely to be the one that makes headlines, for better or worse, in 2025. Advertisement And now, we know how Engstrand wants his unit to play in 2025, with Hall and Allen being the key figureheads in getting this thing off the ground. New Report Suggests Bad News for New York Jets' Breece Hall

New Report Suggests Bad News for New York Jets' Breece Hall originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's a new sheriff in town for the New York Jets, with first year head coach Aaron Glenn taking over. Glenn formerly served as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, and it seems as though Glenn is taking some of his Detroit philosophies to New York, which could scream bad news for running back Breece Hall. Advertisement Albert Breer has high hopes for the Jets' offense, but, the way he sees it happening may not work out in Hall's best interests. "The situation there, I think, is better than people realize. The offensive line, behind young tackles Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou, has a shot to be really good." Breer wrote. "The run game, behind Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, should benefit, and get (Justin) Fields in manageable down-and-distance situations consistently. And he's got built-in chemistry with Garrett Wilson, having played together at Ohio State." While the inclusion of second-year back Braelon Allen there doesn't initially mark Hall's situation as bad, Breer later doubled down, saying he believes Allen's role will be "pretty significant." "I mentioned Braelon Allen above." Breer noted. "I think his role in the Jets offense, alongside Hall, could be pretty significant." Advertisement The Lions have deployed a committee approach to their backfield for years to the tune of great success, and it seems as though Glenn will be holding on to that philosophy. Glenn previously stated that the Jets may use such an approach with as many as three running backs, If Breer's report hold trues, the split between Hall and Allen may be much closer to the tune of a 50-50 split than it was last season. Allen took just 92 carries in his rookie campaign, compared to Hall's 209. Hall averaged more yards per carry (4.2, compared to Allen's 3.6). But, Allen had a much higher rushing success rate, with a 51.1 percent mark to Hall's 46.4 percent. The shift could be an early indicator that the Jets will be moving on from Hall after this year, entering the final year of his rookie deal. Or, it's designed to keep him and his legs healthy for a long future with the Jets. Hall suffered a torn ACL in his rookie campaign and had a nagging injury on the same knee to end last season. New York Jets Have a Bottom Tier 'Big 3'

New York Jets Have a Bottom Tier 'Big 3' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets had a highly lauded 2022 NFL Draft class. The Jets drafted a pair of standout offensive weapons in wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall. Advertisement Wilson is the class's leading receiver, with 3,249 yards under his belt, in spite of inconsistent and poor quarterback play. Meanwhile, Hall is the class's leader in scrimmage yards with 3,625, despite suffering a torn ACL in his seven-game rookie season. The duo of 2022 draftees are teaming up with Wilson's former college teammate, quarterback Justin Fields, for 2025. The trio will serve as the Jets' "big three" offensively for the upcoming NFL season. Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame compiled a ranking of every NFL team's "top offensive triplets" for 2025, and the Jets' trio of Hall, Wilson and Fields did not inspire much confidence for Verderame, being ranked at just No. 26. "New York is starting over with Fields taking over under center." Verderame wrote. "He has some veteran faces as his top options in Hall and Wilson. Despite rancid quarterback play for much of his career, Wilson has been one of the league's top receivers since entering the league three years ago, posting 101 catches, 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024. Hall is a quality player in his own right, rushing for 876 yards and five scores last season." Advertisement Verderame's main concern for the trio appears to be Fields, despite his 4-2 record as a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. The Jets were ranked below trios such as the Denver Broncos' Bo Nix, RJ Harvey and Courtland Sutton, the New England Patriots' Drake Maye, Rhamondre Stevenson and Stefon Diggs, and the cross-town New York Giants' Russell Wilson, Tyrone Tracy and Malik Nabers. The Jets will have the benefit of protecting this trio, more notably Fields and Hall, with one of the NFL's best offensive lines for the upcoming season. Hall's workload remains a question mark, but pairing Wilson with his collegiate quarterback could pay dividends, especially with Fields getting more time in the pocket than he has had his entire NFL career. The duo of Hall and Wilson should not raise concerns, although the rest of the skill players on offense may. Texans' Among Teams Projected to Trade for New York Jets RB Breece Hall

Texans' Among Teams Projected to Trade for New York Jets RB Breece Hall originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite returning their top two rushers from last season - Joe Mixon and Daemon Pierce - the Houston Texans could possibly shake up the running backs room this summer. Advertisement In a recent article offering '100 Bold Predictions for the 2025 NFL Season', Sports Illustrated senior writer Conor Orr suggested the New York Jets would trade running back Breece Hall before the season opener. The Texans were among four teams projected to land Hall. "A handful of running back-needy teams—the Bengals, Chiefs, Texans and Cowboys—will get through camp and search to upgrade at the position, while the Jets will seek to pair Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis with a veteran still on the market who is looking to sign closer to the start of the regular season." Orr wrote. Advertisement Hall burst onto the scene during his rookie season in New York, averaging 5.8 yards per carry in 2023 before suffering a torn ACL. Since then, he's fallen short of 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons with the Jets. Last season, he paced the Jets with 876 rush yards and five touchdowns. Led by Mixon, six different running backs saw playing time for the Texans in 2024. Houston currently has eight running backs listed on the roster, including rookie Woody Marks, the team's fourth-round draft pick out of USC. Reportedly dealing with an ankle injury, Mixon was among a number of players on the non-participant list as the Texans began OTAs on Wednesday. With Mixon out, the thought was Pierce could get some reps in with the first team, but like Mixon, he was among the veterans not present for the voluntary workouts on Wednesday.
