Jets' Breece Hall 'feels a lot better' coming to work, but isn't expecting extension before season
That has been a tough task the past few years for the star running back. But Hall has some reason for optimism as he prepares for his fourth NFL season.
New coach Aaron Glenn has his players believing in the messaging about changing the culture of a franchise that has the league's longest active playoff drought at 14 seasons. The thought of a new system on offense that maximizes his abilities also has Hall thinking he could have more opportunities to shine.
'Yeah, I honestly do,' Hall said Saturday after the Jets' fourth practice of training camp. 'In the past, there's been a lot of instability and stuff around just the whole operation. And I feel like this year, everybody's bought in to this coaching staff. Everybody's bought in to our GM. Everybody's bought in to our owner still.
'So it's like, it just feels a lot better around here coming in every day.'
The Jets went 5-12 last season, when coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were fired in the middle of all the losing.
Hall's comments echo those of other young Jets players including cornerback Sauce Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
'I can see this thing turning around, for sure, especially with Glenn, the type of coach he is,' Vera-Tucker said. 'He praises physicality, but even more, like, accountability. I think that's very important for a head coach to do. You know, it's something I haven't seen as much of in my career.'
Hall is coming off a disappointing individual season during which he rushed for just 876 yards with a career-low 4.2 yards per carry. But Glenn has made it clear to Hall that he's the Jets' starting running back and the leader of what New York hopes will be a three-headed attack with Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis.
New offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is running an offense similar to the one in Detroit for which he was the passing game coordinator. And that's good news for Hall.
'I think from a whole offensive standpoint, we've all really bought in to this run scheme,' he said. 'I think it fits our backs more. I think it makes a lot of more sense to the guys up front and the reasoning why we're doing everything and what we're doing it for — how we're going to set other plays up with our run game. So I think to see how much we've all bought in to it and trusting our coaches now has been good.'
Hall is entering a contract year after being a second-round pick in the 2022 draft out of Iowa State. Two of the Jets' three first-round selections from that year — cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson — received huge extensions shortly before training camp.
Hall said he's not expecting to receive one himself before the regular season. And he's OK with that.
'We've got a new head coach, new GM and obviously I wasn't drafted by them,' Hall said. 'I'm not their guy. So for me, I've got to prove it every day. I think for me, I've got a chip on my shoulder. I feel like right now, OK, it's my last chance. You know, for me, it's always been, oh, he's got potential, he's got potential, but I want to be the product. So now it's all just about putting my head down and working.
'So I feel like I don't really want to discuss all the other stuff. For me, I just try to worry about ball right now.'

This weekend, Jen Pawol will make history by becoming the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball game. She's set to work the series between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The 48-year-old from New Jersey has worked spring training games over the last two years and in the minors since 2016. Here's a look at other female officials who were the first on the floor, court or the field in prominent men's leagues. NFL Shannon Eastin became the first female official in NFL history when she was a line judge during a preseason game in August 2012 between the Green Bay Packers and the Chargers, who were then in San Diego. A month later, she became the first woman to be an official in an NFL regular-season game when she worked as the line judge in the Rams-Lions game. Eastin was among the replacement officials hired by the league during a lockout of the regular officials. The first woman to get a full-season job was Sarah Thomas, who was a line judge in 2015. Thomas also became the first woman to work a Super Bowl when she was part of the seven-person crew on Feb. 7, 2021, when Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9. Thomas was already the first woman to officiate a major college football game — and to work a bowl game. NBA Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner were hired by the National Basketball Association for the 1997 season. Palmer made her NBA debut on Oct. 31, 1997, when she was on the floor for the season opener between the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks. Palmer worked that night with Bill Oakes and Mark Wunderlich. Kantner's first game was Nov. 5, 1997, when Atlanta beat Philadelphia 93-88. Kantner worked alongside Ron Garretson and Ed Middleton. Palmer retired in 2016, and Kantner is still officiating women's NCAA basketball. NHL The NHL has yet to have a female on-ice official for a regular season or Stanley Cup playoff game. In the mid-1990s, Heather McDaniel received some national attention for officiating men's minor league games for the Central Hockey League and West Coast Hockey League. Two decades later, the NHL selected four female officials to work on the ice at the 2019 prospect tournaments. Katie Guay and Kelly Cooke served as referees, while Kirsten Welsh and Kendall Hanley worked as linesmen. It marked the first time women have officiated at the pre-training camp prospects tournament level. There was a subtle change made before the 2023-24 season when 'linesmen' became 'linespersons,' with women in the American Hockey League working their way up. Men's World Cup French referee Stéphanie Frappart made history in 2022 by becoming the first woman to be in charge of a men's World Cup match. The game between Germany at Costa Rica was held in Al Khor, Qatar. Men's NCAA tournament Melanie Davis was the first woman to officiate a Division I NCAA men's tournament game when she was on the floor for a first-round matchup between San Diego State and Illinois on March 15, 2002.

Yankees snap 5-game skid after Paul Goldschmidt's pinch homer to avoid rare sweep in Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt put the Yankees ahead with a pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh inning and New York ended its five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Goldschmidt went deep off lefty reliever Robert Garcia (1-7), who has now given up homers in his last three appearances. The Yankees (61-54) avoided being swept in Texas for the first time since 2010, and kept the Rangers from moving past them for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. Mark Leiter Jr. (5-6) got the win after coming on with a runner on in the sixth and getting a flyout before a double-play grounder to end the inning.
