Yankees snap 5-game skid after Paul Goldschmidt's pinch homer to avoid rare sweep in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt put the Yankees ahead with a pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh inning and New York ended its five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
Goldschmidt went deep off lefty reliever Robert Garcia (1-7), who has now given up homers in his last three appearances.
The Yankees (61-54) avoided being swept in Texas for the first time since 2010, and kept the Rangers from moving past them for the American League's third and final wild-card spot.
Mark Leiter Jr. (5-6) got the win after coming on with a runner on in the sixth and getting a flyout before a double-play grounder to end the inning. That came after his cousin, Rangers rookie starter Jack Leiter, struck out three and walked four in 3 1/3 innings while allowing two runs (one earned).
David Bednar struck out five while throwing 42 pitches over the final 1 2/3 innings for his 18th save.
No. 9 batter Ezequiel Duran had three hits and scored both runs for Texas (60-56), which had an eight-game home winning streak after winning the first two games in the series. He scored on Sam Haggerty's single in the third and Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly in the fifth.
New York went up 2-1 in the fourth. Anthony Volpe had an RBI single and the other run came home on catcher Kyle Higashioka's throwing error when the Yankees pulled off a double steal.
Key moment
Bednar struck out cleanup hitter Adolis García to end the game after Corey Seager had walked and Semien singled.
Key stat
The Yankees are 9-3 this season when trying to avoid being swept in a series.
Up next
Both teams have a day off before home games Friday night against division leaders. The Yankees open a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston, and the Rangers host Philadelphia from the NL East.

Indianapolis Colts' best and worst PFF grades from preseason game vs. Ravens

Following the Indianapolis Colts' performance in Week 1 of the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens, which players received the highest grades from Pro Football Focus, and which received the lowest? Now, before we dive into all that, I do want to mention that while PFF's grading system is certainly helpful at quantifying a player's performance, it is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to evaluations. It is one tool out of many that are out there and should be treated as such. For some context around these grades, below is the grading scale. 90.0+: Elite 80-89.9: High quality 70-79.9: Good 60-69.9: Above average 50-59.9: Average 40-49.9: Below average 39.9 or less: Poor Colts' five highest graded players vs. Ravens CB Alex Johnson (94.9): Johnson got the start at cornerback, and on the two targets that came his way, he got his hands on the ball, forcing a pass breakup and coming away with an interception. LB Joe Bachie (94.7): Bachie made all three of his tackle attempts and two stops in the run game. Giving his overall grade a big boost was the red zone interception Bachie came away with. DE Isaiah Land (86.2): PFF credited Land with one pressure and thought he held up well in the run game, which included forcing two run stops. IOL Josh Sills (86.2): Sills played 42 snaps and didn't allow a single pressure. He also had a run-blocking grade of 81.3. TE Tyler Warren (78.4): Warren was as advertised. He caught all three of his targets for 40 yards, was physical, and proved to be a difficult matchup over the middle of the field. Colts' three lowest graded players vs. Ravens DE Durrell Nchami (35.0): Nchami generated two pressures on just 10 pass rush snaps, which is very good. But on 24 run defense snaps, he had just one assisted tackle and received a grade of 28.6. DT Eric Johnson (38.1): Like Nchami, bringing Johnson's overall grade down was his run defense. Johnson saw a lot of snaps early when Ravens' running back Keaton Mitchell was generating some big runs. CB Johnathan Edwards (39.0): A small sample size for Edwards, but he allowed one reception on one target--although it was for only nine yards--and missed a tackle, both of which contributed to his lower overall grade. Rangers activate Burger, option Osuna

The Texas Rangers have activated first baseman Jake Burger from the 10 day injured list, per To make room for Burger on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned outfielder Alejandro Osuna to AAA Round Rock. Burger went on the injured list over the All Star Break with a quad strain. He has been on a rehab assignment, and went 4 for 6 last night and was a triple shy of the cycle, so I guess they decided he was ready to come back. I would assume that he will be the regular first baseman, though with Josh Smith excelling, Burger could end up in more of a platoon role with Joc Pederson at DH. Osuna was called up when Evan Carter was placed on the injured list and appeared in the last five games the Rangers played, though two of those were late game appearances. In those five games he was 1 for 9 with a walk and a HBP.

Caitlin Clark opens up about dealing with multiple injuries in second WNBA season: 'Trusting the process with everything'

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark opened up about the difficulties of dealing with multiple injuries during her second season in the WNBA. The 2024 first overall pick and rookie of the year winner has missed 18 of the Fever's 31 games this season after never having missed a game during her collegiate career and rookie WNBA season. Speaking on WNBA legend Sue Bird's "Birds Eye View" podcast in an episode released Friday, Clark reflected on the challenges of not being able to be on the court with the team. "I think the most challenging part of all this is... Obviously, I have the first injury, and I sit out four games and then I come back and play really well," Clark said. "I feel really good. Even just the beginning of the year, I played great. My numbers were great. I was shooting the ball well and then I get hurt. "I was like, 'OK, gotta get healthy, whatever,' I gotta do what I can to be back where I was ... As an athlete, you're like, I don't wanna be soft. So I think that's been the hardest part, the stop-and-go of everything." Earlier this season, Clark missed five games due to a quad injury, but has since been dealing with groin issues. Her most recent groin injury came in a win over the Connecticut Sun on July 15, and she hasn't seen the court since then. Speaking to Bird, Clark talked about the frustration of having no set timeline for her injuries. Nevertheless, she emphasized how she is trying to be present for her teammates while going through rehab. "Also, with the type of injuries I've dealt with, there's no real [timeline]," she said. "It's like, 'How do you feel?' Even when I have been back, I don't know how I'm gonna feel the next day after playing ... I feel like the patience of dealing with all that and giving myself a lot of grace. And trying to be the best teammate that I can. "It's hard because I'm not at every second of practice when I've been through the early parts of rehab ... I miss being around my teammates and I miss practicing." In 13 appearances this season, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 5 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game. The Fever are 8-5 with Clark on the court, and 9-7 without her. Indiana, which sits fifth in the league, recently went on a five-game win streak before losing their last two games.
