Vargas has tiebreaking hit in 8th inning as White Sox rally to beat Blue Jays
Miguel Vargas hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Sunday. Vargas had two hits and drove in a pair as the White Sox won a series for the first time since taking two of three against Kansas City from June 6-8. Chicago had lost nine of 10 coming into Sunday's game. The White Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win Friday. Bo Bichette's RBI single in the seventh gave Toronto a 2-1 lead but the Blue Jays' bullpen couldn't hold it. Left-hander Brendon Little (3-1) took the loss while closer Jeff Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in 21 chances. Activated off the paternity list before the game, White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Jordan Leasure (2-4) got two outs in the seventh and Brandon Eisert worked the eighth. Rookie Grant Taylor finished for his first career save. With temperatures in Toronto hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity making it feel even warmer, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed Sunday. Key moment Hoffman came on in the eighth with two outs and runners at first and second. After walking Chase Meidroth to load the bases, Hoffman fumbled Andrew Benintendi's slow roller, allowing the tying run to score. Vargas followed with his two-run hit. Lukes has winning hit in 11th as Blue Jays win 7-6, hand slumping Padres 6th straight loss
TORONTO (AP) — Nathan Lukes hit a game-winning single in the 11th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Padres 7-6 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep, extending San Diego's season-worst losing streak to six. Gavin Sheets hit two home runs and had five RBIs for San Diego, but the Padres couldn't hold on after twice taking the lead in extra innings. Luis Arraez gave San Diego a 5-4 lead with a two-out RBI single to center off Brendon Little in the 10th, but Toronto's Jonatan Clase led off the bottom half with a game-tying single off Robert Suarez, who blew his second save opportunity in 17 chances. Sheets hit an RBI single off Brendon Little in the 11th, but Daulton Varsho led off the bottom half with an RBI triple off Jeremiah Estrada (1-3). San Diego intentionally walked Addison Barger and Ernie Clement flied out before Lukes grounded the winning hit through a drawn-in infield. Toronto's Braydon Fisher (1-0) got one out for the win. Sheets went 3 for 5 with five RBIs. He hit a two-run home run in the second and added a game-tying, two-run blast off Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman in the ninth. The blown save was Hoffman's third in 13 chances. It was the third multi-homer game of Sheets' career and his first since 2022. The homers were his seventh and eighth. Toronto's Anthony Santander was held out of the starting lineup. Santander left Wednesday's game in the seventh because of left hip inflammation. Key moment Lukes picked up his first hit of the game with a ground ball single in the 11th, scoring Varsho from third. Key stat Arraez's 10th-inning single gave the Padres their first hit with a runner in scoring position in more than five games. San Diego went 0 for 38 in such situations before Arraez's hit. Up next Padres: San Diego had not announced a starter for Friday's game at Atlanta. Blue Jays: Toronto had not announced a starter for Friday's game at Tampa Bay. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Rio Giancarlo) SEATTLE (AP) — Addison Barger doubled three times and drove in two runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on Friday night. Barger gave the Blue Jays an early advantage with a two-run double in the first inning. He then scored a run of his own during a three-run third inning that made it 5-0. Advertisement Mariners starter Luis Castillo (3-3) was tagged for five earned runs in five innings. Barger also flashed a nifty glove at third base when taking a sure double away from Julio Rodriguez in the third inning. Two runners were aboard for Rodriguez. The Mariners scored the game's next three runs off starter Kevin Gausman (3-3), and could have tacked on more if not for stranding eight runners on base, including three in the eighth inning. Ultimately, the owners of the best record in the majors since April 7 fell in a rare defeat while the Blue Jays inched closer to .500. Jeff Hoffman pitched the ninth for his eight save. Advertisement Key moment The Mariners loaded the bases in the eighth inning on a leadoff single by Rodriguez and walks from Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena. All three runners were stranded, though, as Miles Mastrobuoni bounced into a fielder's choice while both Leody Taveras and Dylan Moore struck out swinging. Key stat The Blue Jays improved to 7-12 to the road. Up next Seattle right-hander Logan Evans (1-1, 7.20) was set to start Saturday night against right-hander Bowden Francis (2-5, 5.66). ___ AP MLB:
