Vargas has tiebreaking hit in 8th inning as White Sox rally to beat Blue Jays 4-2
Vargas had two hits and drove in a pair as the White Sox won a series for the first time since taking two of three against Kansas City from June 6-8.
Chicago had lost nine of 10 coming into Sunday's game. The White Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win Friday.
Bo Bichette's RBI single in the seventh gave Toronto a 2-1 lead but the Blue Jays' bullpen couldn't hold it. Left-hander Brendon Little (3-1) took the loss while closer Jeff Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in 21 chances.
Activated off the paternity list before the game, White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jordan Leasure (2-4) got two outs in the seventh and Brandon Eisert worked the eighth. Rookie Grant Taylor finished for his first career save.
With temperatures in Toronto hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity making it feel even warmer, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed Sunday.
Hoffman came on in the eighth with two outs and runners at first and second. After walking Chase Meidroth to load the bases, Hoffman fumbled Andrew Benintendi's slow roller , allowing the tying run to score. Vargas followed with his two-run hit.
The White Sox won their second road series of the season. They took two of three at Cincinnati from May 13-15.
White Sox: RHP Shane Smith (3-4, 2.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday against Arizona LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (2-4, 5.93).
Blue Jays: LHP Eric Lauer (3-1, 2.29 ERA) is expected to start at Cleveland on Tuesday against LHP Logan Allen (5-4, 4.21 ERA).

SEC approves 9-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, joining Big Ten and Big 12
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is moving to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, ending a yearslong debate and potentially easing a path toward another expansion of the College Football Playoff. The change was approved by conference presidents and chancellors Thursday. It previously had been recommended by league athletic directors. 'Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities' commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation,' SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. 'This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.' The SEC has played eight conference games each season since 1992 when the conference expanded to 12 teams with the addition of Arkansas and South Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Conference still plays eight league games. The Big 12 and the Big Ten already play nine. Under the SEC's new format: — The league will continue with a single-standings, non-divisional structure; — Each school will play three annual opponents focused on maintaining many traditional rivalries; — Each team's remaining six games will rotate among the remaining conference schools; and — Each team will face every other SEC program at least once every two years and every opponent home and away in four years. SEC teams are required to schedule at least one additional non-conference game against a team from the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten or Big 12 conferences — or Notre Dame. 'The SEC has established itself as the leader in delivering the most compelling football schedule in college athletics,' Sankey said. Andrew McCutchen Sends Message After Comments on Pirates Future Surface
Andrew McCutchen has been back home in Pittsburgh since 2023. The 38-year-old began his career on the Pirates in 2009 before spending time on the San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers. He spent one year with the Giants, Yankees, and Brewers. A three-year stint in Philly wasn't enough as the veteran continued to keep his name in the mix. He's been back in Pittsburgh for the last three seasons. While his numbers may not be off the charts, he's seen an uptick in production compared to last season. When speculation surfaced on Monday about his future, he was quick to clear up his remarks. Andrew McCutchen Clarifies Pittsburgh Columnist's Social Media Post Jason Mackey took to social media to discuss the conversation he had with McCutchen ahead of the Pirates' series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. Mackey wrote of his conversation with McCutchen, "Says he's not talking about anything future-focused with the Pirates. As for his own situation, says he does want to play in 2026." When the reporter asked McCutchen if that would be in Pittsburgh, he responded, "I want to win. That's all. I have to do what I need to do, too." While his batting average is up, the Pirates veteran's OPS has fallen from .739 to .700. His WAR is below 1.0 for the second straight season. Currently, it's only 0.2. There's much more to baseball than just a batting average. Even though McCutchen has one number going back up, most of his numbers are pointing towards his better days being behind him. Brice Turang hits a 2-run homer as Brewers widen NL Central lead over Cubs with 4-1 win
CHICAGO (AP) — Brice Turang hit a two-run homer, Isaac Collins drove in two insurance runs and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Thursday. Turang and Sal Frelick each had two hits as the Brewers opened a seven-game lead over Chicago in the NL Central. Milwaukee took the finale in a five-game series at Wrigley Field after the Cubs won three straight. The Brewers won Monday's opener 7-0. Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, but fell short of winning his 11th straight decision. The right-hander issued a season-high five walks while striking out four and was relieved by Nick Mears (5-3) in the fifth. Five Brewers relievers limited Chicago to two hits. Trevor MeGill worked around a single in the ninth for his 16th save. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (8-6) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings, striking out five.
