Vargas has tiebreaking hit in 8th inning as White Sox rally to beat Blue Jays
Vargas had two hits and drove in a pair as the White Sox won a series for the first time since taking two of three against Kansas City from June 6-8.
Chicago had lost nine of 10 coming into Sunday's game. The White Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win Friday.
Bo Bichette's RBI single in the seventh gave Toronto a 2-1 lead but the Blue Jays' bullpen couldn't hold it. Left-hander Brendon Little (3-1) took the loss while closer Jeff Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in 21 chances.
Activated off the paternity list before the game, White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jordan Leasure (2-4) got two outs in the seventh and Brandon Eisert worked the eighth. Rookie Grant Taylor finished for his first career save.
With temperatures in Toronto hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity making it feel even warmer, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed Sunday.

Ryan Grubb saw progress from all three of Alabama football's scholarship quarterbacks in the Crimson Tide's second scrimmage. All three, he said, made clean and accurate throws, pushing the ball downfield when they could and being smart with their check-down opportunities. To Grubb, it was three quarterbacks running his Alabama offense, one he expects to look a little different than last season. "We're not necessarily a Jalen Milroe offense right now," Grubb said. "Jalen was, obviously, a super talented runner, and that was probably a part of the game plan every week, which was smart last year by the offensive staff." Grubb did not doubt in Alabama starting quarterback Ty Simpson's ability to run the football. Simpson has averaged 5.9 yards on 22 rush attempts with three rushing touchdowns in three collegiate seasons. Grubb described Michael Penix Jr. as a "good runner," one Washington didn't utilize until later because "it's a long season." Grubb needs his quarterback to focus elsewhere. "You're better off with your starter being able to throw the football in this offense than run it," Grubb said. "We'll certainly look for those opportunities because Ty is a good runner. We'll make sure we have things for him. But taking care of him, making sure he's upright is important." Alabama football opens the 2025 season against Florida State Aug. 30. Titans' Simmons says his shove of Ward was simply flared tempers and blown out of proportion
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons defended shoving the Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cameron Ward at the end of practice Monday and accused outsiders of blowing up tempers flaring at a hot training camp practice. The No. 1 overall draft pick, wearing a red non-contact jersey, was celebrating a touchdown throw in a red-zone drill when he put a hand on Simmons, who reacted by shoving Ward. Simmons was escorted off the practice field, not talking to reporters until the end of Tuesday's practice. 'At the end of the day, you know can't touch a quarterback," Simmons said. "We at a joint practice and somebody touch our quarterback, trust me I'm going to be the first one in. So I respect the (expletive) out of the offense for having ... our quarterback back.' Simmons said it was all left on the field and that he would take only football questions. Ward is scheduled to talk after Wednesday's practice. Titans coach Brian Callahan said assistant coaches are asked to take a player off the field if tempers get hot and cool them down. Practice ended two plays later, and Callahan said his conversations with Simmons and Ward were between them. 'It was a training camp push and shove and a little bit of loud barking, and that was pretty much it for me,' Callahan said.
