The Oscars CEO Broke His Silence On "Emilia Pérez" Star Karla Sofía Gascón Reportedly Attending The Show

Hot Topic 🔥 Full coverage and conversation on the Oscars By now, you're all too familiar with the massive flameout that was Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón's Best Actress Oscars campaign. If you're not: Back in January, journalist Sarah Hagi uncovered a lot of offensive tweets that Karla sent between 2016 and 2023. The breadth of the bigotry on display was, quite frankly, staggering. There were anti-Islam tweets, offensive tweets about Chinese people, tweets complaining about Black Lives Matter and the 2020 Oscars. You name it, she tweeted about it. The fallout was swift. Costar Zoe Saldaña distanced herself from Karla's tweets twice, while Selena Gomez admitted that "Some of the magic has disappeared" around promoting the film. The film's director Jacques Audiard basically condemned her, and then he changed his mind the second someone handed him another award for the film. So it goes! Karla, meanwhile, attempted to apologize, several times, without much success. She even gave an extremely defensive hour-long interview to CNN Español, before ultimately saying she'd keep quiet after coming across as defensive in every prior statement. As we've inched towards tomorrow night's Oscars ceremony, Karla has slowly come back into the awards season fold. She walked the red carpet at the Cesar Film Awards last night, and earlier this week reports emerged that, after initially puling funding for her Oscar campaigning, Netflix is paying for Karla to attend the shindig tomorrow. In the midst of this, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter in which he addressed the potential controversy of Karla attending the Oscars tomorrow night. "The Academy does not condone hate speech — I want to be very clear about that," he said, while also mentioning that Karla's nomination (she's the first out trans person to be nominated for an acting Oscar) is "historic." "That's really important," he added. "She's still a nominee. We honor that, but we do not condone hate speech." Bill also noted that "all nominees are invited to attend the show," and that certainly includes Karla. "If Karla joins us for the night, I hope there is an air of respect," he said. "We have over 200 nominees. The night is about much more than one person. We are there to celebrate all of our nominees."

This Netflix Star Was Basically Erased From Her Own Movie At The SAG Awards

When 'Emilia Pérez' was celebrated at Sunday's SAG Awards, Karla Sofía Gascón was far from the spotlight. Not only did the Spanish actor skip the award show, but she also seemed to have been largely cut from a segment highlighting the much-lauded musical crime comedy. In a supercut of the film's highlights, its leading lady only appeared for a split second while supporting stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña took up most of the screen time. Gascón has been keeping a low profile after a slate of offensive X posts she once made resurfaced late last month. In the since-deleted posts, the actor denigrated Muslims, criticized diversity at the Oscars and called George Floyd a 'drug addict swindler.' Another post purported to be from Gascón described her co-star Gomez as a 'rich rat.' Though she subsequently apologized for the 'hurt' her words may have caused in a statement through 'Emilia Pérez' distributor Netflix, she also complained about the backlash in separate interviews. 'I have been convicted and sacrificed and crucified and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself,' she told CNN Español earlier this month. The SAG Awards were not the first event Gascón has chosen to skip this awards season. She was also conspicuously absent from this month's Critics Choice Awards, PGA Awards and the BAFTAs. While the star has been avoiding the public eye since the controversy began, she is reportedly planning to attend next month's Oscars. Gascón made history when she became the first transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress. Zoe Saldaña Had An Extremely Blunt Response When Asked About Karla Sofía Gascón's Claim That Her Costars Support Her '200%' Amid Her Racism Scandal

Hot Topic 🔥 Full coverage and conversation on the Oscars The recent controversy surrounding Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón is continuing to spiral. In case you missed it, in a CNN Español interview released on Sunday, Karla Sofía broke down while insisting that her previous online posts do not define who she is, and insisted that she was not a racist. She also released a lengthy Instagram statement in which she said, 'I am not racist. I have a lot of things to improve in this world, my way of expressing myself [is] one of them. But I will not apologize for something I am not.' The online posts in question included many expressing anti-Islamic sentiment, posts targeting diversity at the Oscars, and some damning statements about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. In her statement, she also alleged that people 'have created posts as if it were me insulting even my colleagues.' This was likely in reference to a since-deleted post of hers that was circulating in which she referred to her Emilia Pérez costar Selena Gomez as a 'rich rat.' Karla Sofía also stated in the Sunday interview that her costars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña support her '200%.' Previously, Zoe Saldaña made a statement on January 31 about the controversy, saying, 'It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.' She continued, 'I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity. And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.' In addition to Zoe's previous statement, Selena Gomez is yet to make any public comment – either in support of Karla as she claims, or in condemnation of her offensive posts. However, Emilia Pérez directer Jaques Audiard released a statement on February 5 condemning Karla Sofía's behavior and stating that Karla Sofía was in a 'self-destructive approach.' Charley Gallay / Getty Images for Netflix He added, 'I'm thinking... of how [she's] hurting others, of how she's hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I'm thinking of myself, I'm thinking of Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don't understand why she's continuing to harm us.' And as well as the distance from her costars and director, Netflix has reportedly enforced a divide with Karla Sofía, with a source telling Variety on Tuesday that they will no longer be funding her attendance at upcoming awards shows. Now, Zoe has responded to Karla Sofía's claims about her alleged '200% support' of her disgraced costar. In an upcoming episode of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Zoe was asked about the claim. When questioned about the topic, Zoe apparently took 'a long blink,' and did not confirm the statement. Which, in my opinion, totally says it all. 'I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for,' she concluded.
