Zoe Saldaña Had An Extremely Blunt Response When Asked About Karla Sofía Gascón's Claim That Her Costars Support Her '200%' Amid Her Racism Scandal
Hot Topic
🔥 Full coverage and conversation on the Oscars
The recent controversy surrounding Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón is continuing to spiral.
In case you missed it, in a CNN Español interview released on Sunday, Karla Sofía broke down while insisting that her previous online posts do not define who she is, and insisted that she was not a racist.
She also released a lengthy Instagram statement in which she said, 'I am not racist. I have a lot of things to improve in this world, my way of expressing myself [is] one of them. But I will not apologize for something I am not.'
The online posts in question included many expressing anti-Islamic sentiment, posts targeting diversity at the Oscars, and some damning statements about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.
In her statement, she also alleged that people 'have created posts as if it were me insulting even my colleagues.' This was likely in reference to a since-deleted post of hers that was circulating in which she referred to her Emilia Pérez costar Selena Gomez as a 'rich rat.'
Karla Sofía also stated in the Sunday interview that her costars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña support her '200%.'
Previously, Zoe Saldaña made a statement on January 31 about the controversy, saying, 'It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.'
She continued, 'I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity. And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.'
In addition to Zoe's previous statement, Selena Gomez is yet to make any public comment – either in support of Karla as she claims, or in condemnation of her offensive posts. However, Emilia Pérez directer Jaques Audiard released a statement on February 5 condemning Karla Sofía's behavior and stating that Karla Sofía was in a 'self-destructive approach.'

He added, 'I'm thinking... of how [she's] hurting others, of how she's hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I'm thinking of myself, I'm thinking of Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don't understand why she's continuing to harm us.'
And as well as the distance from her costars and director, Netflix has reportedly enforced a divide with Karla Sofía, with a source telling Variety on Tuesday that they will no longer be funding her attendance at upcoming awards shows.
Now, Zoe has responded to Karla Sofía's claims about her alleged '200% support' of her disgraced costar.
In an upcoming episode of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Zoe was asked about the claim. When questioned about the topic, Zoe apparently took 'a long blink,' and did not confirm the statement. Which, in my opinion, totally says it all.
'I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for,' she concluded.

Helen Hunt on why she's rejecting Hollywood beauty standards
Helen Hunt on why she's rejecting Hollywood beauty standards Helen Hunt may be Hollywood royalty, but she's no beauty queen. The Oscar-winning actress, 61, opened up about the inner turmoil she's experienced in the entertainment industry due to Hollywood's intense beauty standards in a June cover story for Flow Space. Hunt, best known for her roles in the sitcom "Mad About You" and acclaimed dramas "As Good as It Gets" and "Twister," rose to fame in the 1990s when celebrity tabloids routinely scrutinized stars' physical appearance. "It felt impossible not to internalize the way you're supposed to look," Hunt reflected. "And (there was) a certain amount of misery and shame around not looking exactly that way." While Hunt rarely discusses the image pressures of being in Hollywood, she said she eventually reached a turning point. "I realized, 'This could quietly ruin your whole life.' I made a decision: I'm not playing. Not going to (let it) take up a lot of space in my mind," she said. Hunt added that the self-help book "The Only Diet There Is" by Sondra Ray was helpful in shifting her perspective on food and body image. "What I took from it is eat what you want and love every bite, period," she said. Justine Bateman embraces getting older: How to feel beautiful and accept aging The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress isn't the only female veteran to get candid on rejecting beauty standards. "Baywatch" alum Pamela Anderson and actress Justine Bateman have spoken out about embracing aging and stepping out in makeup-free looks. In a 2023 interview with "60 Minutes Australia," Bateman, who'd become the subject of online commentary over her "old" looks, defended her aged appearance and said cosmetic procedures "would erase" the authority she's gained over the years. "I like feeling that I am a different person now than I was when I was 20," Bateman said at the time. "I like looking in the mirror and seeing that evidence. ... I think my face represents who I am. I like it.'

Taraji P. Henson Goes Textural in Christian Siriano Dress for ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'
Taraji P. Henson was joined by filmmaker Tyler Perry during their joint appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' on Tuesday in New York City. The director and Oscar-nominated actress were on-hand to discuss their forthcoming film 'Straw.' For the late-night talk show appearance, Henson turned to the runway for her attire. The actress put a textural, contemporary spin on the little black dress with flashes of classic inspiration courtesy of designer Christian Siriano. The sleeveless black dress featured a plunging neckline and midi length, which showcased Henson's heels courtesy of Giuseppe Zanotti. The dress included such elements as a cinched waist for added silhouette definition and featured a corseted element as well. Henson kept the dress as the centerpiece of her look, adding delicate pieces of jewelry, including rings and earrings. Her pixie cut hair was styled in a sleek look with makeup elements featuring bold brows, lined eyes and a glossy lip. Siriano's little black dress follows an ongoing trend of creative takes on the wardrobe staple. On Monday, Amanda Seyfried styled a little black dress by Rabanne with a bevy of fringe details. Back in May 2024, Sydney Sweeney wore a little black dress from Miu Miu's fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection that featured hip cutouts. Siriano's fall 2025 ready-to-wear collection was all about resistance, as noted by WWD's Thomas Waller in a review of the collection. 'The world has changed and Siriano wanted a bit of defiance on his runway, including a massive red cloak that was a direct nod to the final season of 'The Handmaid's Tale,'' Waller wrote. 'He collaborated with Hulu to design a custom piece that has been used as a sign of protest in the fight for women's rights worldwide. The protest idea was seen with a mix of his early red looks with cascading fabric that felt restrictive yet powerful.' Henson stars in Perry's 'Straw,' about a single mother who goes to unimaginable lengths to secure a future for herself and her young daughter. The film costars Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor.
