Netflix Has Reportedly Agreed To Send The Disgraced 'Emilia Pérez' Star Karla Sofía Gascón To The Oscars Despite Her Racism Controversy, And People Are Not Impressed
There's less than a week until the Oscars, which hopefully means less than a week until I never have to hear about the Emilia Pérez drama ever again. If you've not been following, I'll give you the speediest recap I can. The 13-time Oscar-nominated film Emilia Pérez is critically acclaimed, but pretty widely disliked for a number of reasons. The leading star, Karla Sofía Gascón, made history by being the first ever trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress. But approximately a week later, a barrage of her old hateful tweets resurfaced and landed her in seriously hot water. I say old, but some of her racist and anti-Islamic posts were from, like, 2023. Not a good look. She made a number of apologies, but folks online didn't seem to think they were at all sincere. Since the drama, the Emilia Pérez cast and crew seemed to be distancing themselves from Karla Sofía. Her costars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez both shared that the experience of the movie has been affected by Karla Sofía's actions, with Zoe publicly denouncing racist behavior. The director of Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard, spoke at length about how damaging Karla Sofía's actions were in an interview with Deadline released on Feb. 5. However, when Jacques won at the BAFTAs a week later he gave a notable shoutout to Karla Sofía, leading many people online to question how the crew actually felt about the whole situation. According to a source reported by Variety on Feb. 4, Netflix was distancing itself from Karla Sofía following the controversy and only communicating with her through her talent agent. The source also told Variety that Netflix was no longer planning on covering expenses for award shows — including the Oscars — and that if Karla Sofía chose to attend, she would have to cover travel and styling expenses herself. Karla Sofía was then notably absent from a number of major award shows this season, including the recent BAFTAs and SAG Awards. But now, it seems like this is no longer the case. In a report released by Variety on Feb. 25, sources have claimed that Netflix now plans on fully funding Karla Sofía for the Oscars this Sunday. According to insiders, the full details of her attendance are still being finalized, and it's still unknown whether she will be seated with her Emilia Pérez costars or if she'll be interviewed on the carpet. Netflix has yet to issue a public statement on the situation. However, there's been a ton of discourse online about the new development. One user criticized the move, saying, 'so that was all performative lmao,' before another agreed, suggesting that Netflix had 'waited until voting closed and said pull up.' 'Netflix y'all are such cowards STAND UP,' one person added. What are your thoughts on the situation? LMK down below. There's less than a week until the Oscars, which hopefully means less than a week until I never have to hear about the Emilia Pérez drama ever again. If you've not been following, I'll give you the speediest recap I can. The 10-time Oscar-nominated film Emilia Pérez is critically acclaimed, but pretty widely disliked for a number of reasons. The Director Of 'Emilia Pérez' Gave Karla Sofía Gascón A Controversial Tribute In His BAFTA Acceptance Speech After Recently Condemning Her Racist Posts, And I'm Genuinely Shocked
OK, we all know the Emilia Pérez controversy is messy, but now even I'm confused. In case you need a quick refresher, Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón made history this award season as the first openly trans actor to receive a Best Actress Academy Award nomination. Shortly afterwards, she made headlines as a legion of her racist and anti-Islamic posts resurfaced online. Karla Sofía's numerous responses were… questionable. After a couple of sort-of-apologies, she did a long interview with CNN en Español insisting that her previous actions did not define her. One of her statements on Instagram included what seemed like a claim that the racist posts resurfacing were an attempt to stifle her Oscar chances. Which… is definitely a claim. She also stated on CNN that her Emilia Pérez costars were in support of her '200%.' Zoë Saldaña and Selena Gomez — who play Rita and Jessi in the musical, respectively — have both since implied that this is not the case. Netflix has also reportedly stopped funding Karla Sofía for award season. And while the Emilia Pédrez cast distanced themselves, the film's director, Jacques Audiard, was also left appalled by Karla Sofía's past posts. In an interview with Deadline from just two weeks ago, Jacques described Karla Sofía's past words as 'inexcusable.' 'It's very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía,' Jacques said. 'I haven't spoken to her, and I don't want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in, and I really don't understand why she's continuing. I'm thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she's hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I'm thinking of myself, I'm thinking of Zoë [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don't understand why she's continuing to harm us.' 'I'm not getting in touch with her because right now she needs space to reflect and take accountability for her actions,' he added. Jacques went on to state that Karla Sofía had been 'playing the victim' in the situation. 'It's as if she thought that words don't hurt,' he explained. And while the interview, conducted on February 5, seemed to clarify how Jacques felt about Karla Sofía, his recent speech at the BAFTAs has left people confused. Last night, Emilia Pérez was awarded the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language. And while Karla Sofía was not present at the BAFTAs held in London, Jacques made a point to thank her in his acceptance speech. And like, really thank her. 'Above all, I would like to thank all the wonderful artists who brought this film to life and who are here with us tonight,' he said, translated by an interpreter. 'My dear Zoë, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia and your team, but also you, my dear Karla Sofía, that I kiss. I'm deeply proud of what we achieved together. Long live Emilia Pérez!' Jacques was not the only Emilia Pérez winner to shout out Karla Sofía in an acceptance speech. Zoë, who was awarded Best Supporting Actress, also gave her a mention, although it was a little more covert. 'I want to thank my wonderful cast, Karla, Selena, Adriana,' Zoë said. 'Films are supposed to change hearts and challenge minds. And I hope that Emilia Pérez did something like this, please, because voices need to be heard.' Meanwhile, the online response to Emilia Pérez winning more awards has been pretty much what you'd expect. The controversy surrounding the film began even before Karla Sofía's posts resurfaced, as many people felt that the film was a misrepresentation of the Mexican community, especially considering the distinct lack of Mexican folks both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to the issues with Mexican representation, members of the LGBTQ+ community have voiced their own issues with the film, with GLAAD calling Emilia Pérez a 'profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman.'

Zoe Saldaña Had An Extremely Blunt Response When Asked About Karla Sofía Gascón's Claim That Her Costars Support Her '200%' Amid Her Racism Scandal
Hot Topic 🔥 Full coverage and conversation on the Oscars The recent controversy surrounding Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón is continuing to spiral. In case you missed it, in a CNN Español interview released on Sunday, Karla Sofía broke down while insisting that her previous online posts do not define who she is, and insisted that she was not a racist. She also released a lengthy Instagram statement in which she said, 'I am not racist. I have a lot of things to improve in this world, my way of expressing myself [is] one of them. But I will not apologize for something I am not.' The online posts in question included many expressing anti-Islamic sentiment, posts targeting diversity at the Oscars, and some damning statements about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. In her statement, she also alleged that people 'have created posts as if it were me insulting even my colleagues.' This was likely in reference to a since-deleted post of hers that was circulating in which she referred to her Emilia Pérez costar Selena Gomez as a 'rich rat.' Karla Sofía also stated in the Sunday interview that her costars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña support her '200%.' Previously, Zoe Saldaña made a statement on January 31 about the controversy, saying, 'It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.' She continued, 'I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity. And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.' In addition to Zoe's previous statement, Selena Gomez is yet to make any public comment – either in support of Karla as she claims, or in condemnation of her offensive posts. However, Emilia Pérez directer Jaques Audiard released a statement on February 5 condemning Karla Sofía's behavior and stating that Karla Sofía was in a 'self-destructive approach.' Charley Gallay / Getty Images for Netflix He added, 'I'm thinking... of how [she's] hurting others, of how she's hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I'm thinking of myself, I'm thinking of Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don't understand why she's continuing to harm us.' And as well as the distance from her costars and director, Netflix has reportedly enforced a divide with Karla Sofía, with a source telling Variety on Tuesday that they will no longer be funding her attendance at upcoming awards shows. Now, Zoe has responded to Karla Sofía's claims about her alleged '200% support' of her disgraced costar. In an upcoming episode of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Zoe was asked about the claim. When questioned about the topic, Zoe apparently took 'a long blink,' and did not confirm the statement. Which, in my opinion, totally says it all. 'I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for,' she concluded.
