Netflix Has Reportedly Agreed To Send The Disgraced 'Emilia Pérez' Star Karla Sofía Gascón To The Oscars Despite Her Racism Controversy, And People Are Not Impressed
If you've not been following, I'll give you the speediest recap I can. The 13-time Oscar-nominated film Emilia Pérez is critically acclaimed, but pretty widely disliked for a number of reasons. The leading star, Karla Sofía Gascón, made history by being the first ever trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress. But approximately a week later, a barrage of her old hateful tweets resurfaced and landed her in seriously hot water.
I say old, but some of her racist and anti-Islamic posts were from, like, 2023. Not a good look. She made a number of apologies, but folks online didn't seem to think they were at all sincere.
Since the drama, the Emilia Pérez cast and crew seemed to be distancing themselves from Karla Sofía. Her costars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez both shared that the experience of the movie has been affected by Karla Sofía's actions, with Zoe publicly denouncing racist behavior.
The director of Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard, spoke at length about how damaging Karla Sofía's actions were in an interview with Deadline released on Feb. 5. However, when Jacques won at the BAFTAs a week later he gave a notable shoutout to Karla Sofía, leading many people online to question how the crew actually felt about the whole situation.
According to a source reported by Variety on Feb. 4, Netflix was distancing itself from Karla Sofía following the controversy and only communicating with her through her talent agent. The source also told Variety that Netflix was no longer planning on covering expenses for award shows — including the Oscars — and that if Karla Sofía chose to attend, she would have to cover travel and styling expenses herself. Karla Sofía was then notably absent from a number of major award shows this season, including the recent BAFTAs and SAG Awards.
But now, it seems like this is no longer the case. In a report released by Variety on Feb. 25, sources have claimed that Netflix now plans on fully funding Karla Sofía for the Oscars this Sunday.
According to insiders, the full details of her attendance are still being finalized, and it's still unknown whether she will be seated with her Emilia Pérez costars or if she'll be interviewed on the carpet. Netflix has yet to issue a public statement on the situation. However, there's been a ton of discourse online about the new development.
One user criticized the move, saying, 'so that was all performative lmao,' before another agreed, suggesting that Netflix had 'waited until voting closed and said pull up.'
'Netflix y'all are such cowards STAND UP,' one person added.

Georgina Rodríguez and Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Cinderella'-Like Love Story Began in a Gucci Store
THE RUNDOWN After nearly a decade together, Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez are officially engaged. Rodríguez confirmed the news on Instagram in August 2025, posting a photo of her huge oval diamond ring with the caption: 'Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.' The couple's love story started in Madrid in 2017, when Rodríguez was working as a sales assistant, and Ronaldo was already one of the most famous athletes in the world. Since then, they've navigated major career transitions, parenthood, life in multiple countries, and personal loss, building a family together along the way. Here, their relationship history in full: Rodríguez and Ronaldo first crossed paths in Madrid at a Gucci store where she worked. 'When I saw him, he was so handsome, I felt embarrassed to look at him,' Rodríguez said in a March 2023 interview on Spanish talk show El Hormiguero. 'Let's just say it was butterflies in my stomach.' In Rodríguez's Netflix reality series I Am Georgina, Ronaldo also recalled that he found her to be 'a very interesting girl, so much more mature for her age.' The pair made their first public appearance as a couple at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich, attending with Ronaldo's oldest son, Cristiano Jr. Ronaldo shared their first Instagram together in spring 2017, posting a photo of them on a couch, captioned simply, '❤️.' Ronaldo confirmed the birth of their twins Eva and Mateo, delivered via surrogate. 'So happy to be able to hold the two new loves of my life 🙏🏻❤️,' he captioned a Facebook photo of him holding the baby boy and girl on June 29. Weeks later, Ronaldo confirmed Rodríguez was pregnant again. He told Spanish outlet El Mundo that he was 'very excited' to become a father again. On November 12, the couple welcomed daughter Alana Martina, their first child together. 'Alana Martina has just been born! Geo and Alana are both doing great!,' Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. 'We are all very happy! ❤️' Rodríguez later explained that she and Ronaldo each chose part of their daughter's name: 'Cristiano chose Alana, and I chose Martina,' she told ¡HOLA!, per People. 'We decided to give her both names that each of us chose. We thought it was even more special.' Engagement rumors first surfaced when Rodríguez was photographed wearing a large ring. At the time, neither addressed the speculation. Ronaldo and Rodríguez continued to share milestones as a blended family. That June, they shared a family photo from a private plane. Rodríguez captioned it in Spanish: 'Buen día con amor,' which translates to 'Good day with love.' Throughout the pandemic, the couple regularly posted updates from home. On New Year's Eve, Ronaldo reflected on the challenges of the year in a family Instagram. '2020 was not an easy year, there's no doubt about it. No one can be indifferent to the pain and suffering that COVID-19 brought upon the world,' he wrote in the caption. 'But now it's time to bounce back and show that, together, we can make a difference. Because no matter how hard is the fall, what really defines us is the way we get back on our feet and how fast we are ready to face new obstacles. So let's try to turn 2021 into a turning point, a new beginning, a fresh start. Because all of us—and I do mean all of us—can still become better versions of ourselves. And if we do it all together, that might actually be the secret to turn things around for the better. Happy New Year! And may 2021 be a year to always remember for the best reasons! 🙏🏽❤️' In October, Ronaldo and Rodríguez announced they were expecting twins again. 'Delighted to announce we are expecting twins,' Ronaldo wrote on Instagram with Rodríguez alongside a sonogram photo. 'Our hearts are full of love—we can't wait to meet you.' In December, they revealed the sexes of their babies in a family balloon-popping video that showed pink and blue confetti. 'Where life begins, and love never ends,' they captioned the post. Ronaldo and Rodríguez shared that their newborn son had passed away during childbirth. Their daughter Bella survived. 'It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the death of our baby. It is the greatest pain any parent can feel,' the couple wrote in a joint statement. 'Only the birth of our baby gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their care and support. We are devastated and ask for privacy at this difficult time. Our boy, you are our angel. We will love you forever.' Rodríguez reflected on the loss in I Am Georgina season 2. 'Over 40 million people follow me, but no one knows how I really feel,' she said in a trailer released on March 15. 'This year, I had the best and the worst moment of my life in an instant.' That same year, the family relocated to Saudi Arabia after Ronaldo signed with Al Nassr FC. 'Saudi Arabia is a country that has welcomed us with much love and open arms,' Rodríguez later shared in her June 2025 Vogue Arabia cover story. 'It's also a very family-oriented country, and I only have good words and gratitude.' Rodríguez appeared on the cover of Vogue Arabia in a candid interview conducted by Ronaldo himself. 'For me, the most important thing is you and our family,' she told him. 'Everything I do professionally revolves around your well-being. All my shoots and work commitments are organized around our family's availability. Our children always accompany me on all my trips so I can enjoy them at all times. I'm also lucky enough to be able to choose the projects I want to pursue in my career. I also choose them based on your sports schedule and the safety of our family's needs. Our family comes first.' She also shared more about first meeting Ronaldo, saying, 'I felt something inside that can't be explained, as if we had known each other all our lives. I remember that when we held hands for the first time, I felt inexplicable peace and energy. When people are in love like we are, they know what that strong connection is. That spark we had since we met has also grown and matured over time.' After eight years together, Rodríguez revealed their engagement on Instagram, debuting an oval-cut diamond ring estimated to weigh over 30 carats and be worth millions.

'Stranger Things' creators, the Duffer Brothers, ink 4-year deal with Paramount Skydance
The masterminds behind the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things" have inked a new deal. The Duffer Brothers, the creative team of Matt and Ross Duffer, signed an exclusive four-year agreement with Paramount, newly merged with Skydance, for feature films, television and streaming projects. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Duffer Brothers' contract with Netflix ends in April 2026. Upon that closure, Upside Down Pictures, led by the brothers and producing partner Hilary Leavitt, will begin developing projects for Paramount Pictures, Paramount Television and Paramount direct-to-consumer. "We couldn't be more thrilled to be joining the Paramount family," Matt and Ross Duffer said in a joint statement Tuesday, adding that "bringing bold, original films to the big screen ... is not just exciting – it's the fulfillment of a lifelong dream." The Duffer Brothers are best known for "Stranger Things," a sci-fi horror series which is set to stream its fifth and final season on Netflix later this fall. The pair also wrote and directed the 2015 psychological thriller film "Hidden" and were involved in the production of "Wayward Pines," which ran on Fox for two seasons starting in 2015. The pair has two projects in the works for Netflix — "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen" and "The Boroughs" — and plans to build out the "Stranger Things" franchise. The brothers said they will remain involved with Netflix for those projects. The deal with the Duffer Brothers comes shortly after Paramount officially merged with Skydance. Chairman and CEO David Ellison said in an open letter earlier this month that the company would invest in "high-quality storytelling and cutting-edge technology" to help "define the next era of entertainment."
