Auburn receives massive jump in ESPN FPI heading into 2025 season

Auburn receives massive jump in ESPN FPI heading into 2025 season The Auburn Tigers have not lived up to expectations on the gridiron for most of the decade, but with back-to-back highly touted recruiting classes and an abundance of impact transfers on the way, Hugh Freeze's squad is expected to compete for at the top half of the SEC in 2025. Those high expectations were displayed in ESPN's opening Football Power Index rankings, in which Auburn was one of the biggest risers from last year's list. The Tigers checked in at the No. 14 spot in the FPI, sandwiched between a pair of fellow SEC teams in Ole Miss (No. 13) and South Carolina (No. 15). The ranking was a huge jump from where the Tigers finished 2024, as Hugh Freeze's team didn't even finish inside of the top 30 after losing the Iron Bowl and missing out on a bowl game. Auburn's 17 spot jump from No. 31 to No. 14 was the largest among teams currently ranked in the top 20. Hugh Freeze's squad is the only program ranked in the top 15 that did not finish last season ranked in the top 25. While the jump, and the company Auburn has enjoyed because of it, may seem like an ambitious projection, it does make sense when looking at the drastically improved nature of the Tigers roster. Next season's version of the Tigers will feature a new signal caller under center, a myriad of four and five-star recruits on the defensive side of the football, and a receiving duo of Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. that is being described as a top duo in the nation by many experts. The next step for Hugh Freeze's squad is to prove it on Saturdays in the fall. If they don't, the No. 14 team in FPI will fall right back to No. 31 before long. Cam Coleman included in AP's 'players to watch' list

Cam Coleman included in AP's 'players to watch' list Expect Coleman to have a stellar 2025 campaign says Mark Long of the Associated Press. Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman arrived at Auburn with plenty of hype surrounding him. However, it took most of the season for him to show off his full potential. The former five-star wide receiver was targeted 28 times over the first eight games of his freshman season in 2024, catching 17 of those for 292 yards and two scores. Auburn's offense shifted gears over the final three games to give Coleman more pass-catching opportunities. The results? Coleman was targeted 25 times, catching 22 passes for 306 yards and six touchdowns. The uptick in production caught the attention of Mark Long of the Associated Press, who has included Coleman in his picks for "SEC Players to Watch" ahead of the 2025 season. WR Cam Coleman was arguably the SEC's best receiver in late November, notching a combined 23 catches for 306 yards and six touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, Texas A&M, and Alabama. Like Williams at Alabama, he was only a freshman. Coleman is expected to lead a talented group of wide receivers in 2025. Fellow rising sophomores Malcolm Simmons and Perry Thompson return to the unit, while Auburn has added former Georgia Tech wide receiver Eric Singleton and former Wake Forest wide receiver Horatio Fields to stack the room with talent. PFF ranks returning Auburn receivers rank among best in the nation

Hugh Freeze's Auburn Tigers haven't quite taken the elite offensive step that the head coach promised to bring to the Plains when he was hired two years ago, but expectations are beginning to mount this season. One of the reasons for the high expectations, which have led many experts to rank the Tigers among their preseason top 10 programs, is the impending arrival of transfer quarterback Jackson Arnold. The former five-star signal-caller is a sensational prospect, but he may become an elite quarterback because of the weapons he has at his disposal. Two of those weapons, second-year Tiger Cam Coleman and incoming Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr., are expected to be one of the most dangerous pass catching duos in the nation. PFF currently ranked the duo No. 6 and No. 5, respectively, in it's 'Top 10 Returning Wide Receivers for the 2025 Season' rankings this week. Singleton and Coleman are the only teammates to appear in the top 10. They both trail only Alabama's Ryan Williams (No. 2 ) for the top spot in the conference, with Texas A&M's Kevin Concepcion (No. 8) and Florida's Eugene Wilson III (No. 10) rounding out the four SEC receivers tabbed in the top 10. A 5-foot-11, 190 pound speed demon, Singleton Jr. buzzed his way to 1,468 yards and 9 touchdowns during his two seasons as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket. He's averaged just over 14 yards per reception throughout his college career, and leads all returning Power Four receivers with 664 receiving yards on deep balls since 2023. The Douglasville, Georgia native may be in store for even more room to operate in the deep half of the field this season with Cam Coleman lining up across the formation. Coleman, who just missed out of the top 5 returning receivers according to PFF, is coming off one of the best first-year pass catching campaigns by a Tiger ever. The 6-foot-3 big bodied receiver accumulated 598 yards and 8 touchdowns during his first season of college football, with most of his production coming towards the end of the season. Coleman averaged 7.3 receptions, 102 yards, and 1.7 touchdowns during Auburn's final three game's against UL Monroe, Texas A&M, and Alabama, leading many to believe the freshman had finally unlocked his game-changing talent after an inconsistent, injury-ridden, start to his inaugural college football campaign. Both Coleman and Singleton Jr. have proven they can become game changing players on the offensive side of the football. Whether both can coexist in the same offense, at least at an extremely high level, remains to be seen. Auburn fans will get their first look at one of the best pass catching duos in the country when spring practices begin in a few months. Auburn WR Cam Coleman has 'breakout potential' for 2025 season

Auburn landed the nation's No. 2 wide receiver from the 2024 recruiting cycle in Cam Coleman, who was projected to immediately impact the Tigers' offense. However, due to inconsistent quarterback play and offensive game planning, Coleman did not have as strong of a season as fellow top-five receivers Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State and Ryan Williams from Alabama. He ended the 2024 season as the team's second-leading receiver with 598 yards on 37 catches with eight touchdowns. However, Ari Wasserman of On3 believes that Coleman can make great strides toward becoming a household name in 2025. Wasserman expects Coleman to benefit greatly from Auburn's revamped quarterback room, which led him to include him on his list of 10 college football players with breakout potential. Last year was a huge year for true freshmen wide receivers like Alabama's Ryan Williams and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith. Coleman, who also was a five-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle, has talent and potential that is similar to those two players, but he likely wasn't able to reach his full potential a year ago because of Auburn's inconsistent quarterback play. Coleman still had 37 receptions for 598 yards and 8 touchdowns. Auburn has options to greatly improve its quarterback play, which could be the situation Coleman needs to launch himself into full stardom. Following the 2024 season, Auburn blew up and rebuilt its quarterback room with two experienced transfer quarterbacks, an Alabama high school legend with SEC experience, and a five-star true freshman. Jackson Arnold, Auburn's projected starting quarterback, was a five-star quarterback in high school and won Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas. He passed for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns during his redshirt freshman season at Oklahoma last season and looks to take a step forward with a more experienced offensive line and talented receivers such as Coleman to work with. Ex-Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels will also compete for the job. Daniels has passed for 3,986 yards and 21 touchdowns in three collegiate seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, Coleman was Auburn's third-most efficient receiver behind KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Malcolm Simmons. Coleman, along with Simmons, returns to Auburn's offense this season and will have the luxury of playing alongside the transfer portal's No. 1 receiver Eric Singleton.
