Child, 7, fires BB gun at windows of Pierce County elementary school, deputies say
Brookdale Elementary School in Parkland was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a child shot BBs gun through the windows. Deputies were dispatched at 9:08 a.m. to the 600 block of 132nd Street South for reports of shots fired and a teacher saying two windows were shattered, Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune. People in the area were interviewed, and deputies checked the area, Cappetto said. Once it was determined the shots came from a nearby home, deputies contacted the homeowners, she said. They learned their 7-year-old son had shot his BB Gun Glock replica towards the school. The child was gifted the gun from a family member and thought it was a 'toy.' No one was injured and no arrests were made. Deputies took in the BB gun for evidence, Cappetto said. The investigation will be forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review. 'The Pierce County Sheriff's Office is seeing more and more of these types of 'replica' BB guns with high velocity C02 cartridges. These are not toys and should not be in the hands of children,' she said. Cappetto cited an incident in May 2024 when 51-year-old Rickey Albers was shot and killed by a pellet gun in the Graham area. His girlfriend, Nicole Lynn Johnson, was charged in his death and pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in February. She has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison, The News Tribune reported.

USPS worker robbed at gunpoint on job, suspect arrested
A United States Postal Service worker was robbed of their keys while delivering mail in Spanaway. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says on March 31st, the postal worker was on his route off 212th Street Court E in a gated community when someone pulled up behind his work van, pulled a gun on him and took the keys right off the mailbox. 'The suspect had walked up to him wearing this face mask and literally just pointed a gun at him,' Deputy Carly Cappetto said. Pierce County shared body camera video where deputies found the postal worker after the robbery. He told deputies the person who robbed him was also wearing a ski mask and had taken off in a Maroon Kia. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says they were able to pull surveillance video from the surrounding neighborhood to get the license plate and direction of the vehicle; however, the license plate did not come back to the KIA which meant the vehicle was stolen. Not long after the encounter, Lakewood Police spotted the maroon Kia, pursued the vehicle and shortly arrested the 33-year-old suspect. Lakewood officers and Pierce County deputies found the stolen mail keys, a gun and the ski mask matching the description from the postal worker. Deputy Cappetto says this sort of crime can have a horrific ripple affect across the community. 'And mail theft typically leads to a lot of other crimes such as fraud or impersonation or illegally submitted tax returns,' Deputy Cappetto said. 'It could be much more than mail theft. It could be a variety of other felony crimes and those could impact people's lives significantly,' she continued. Police also found 3 passengers inside the stolen vehicle who were later released at the scene since they were not a part of the robbery. The suspect is in the Pierce County Jail facing charges ranging from eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle and a warrant for robbery charges. Deputy Cappetto says once the warrant is complete, robbery charges will come soon.

Thief caught stealing $10k of Legos from Pierce County toy store. Watch the police bust
A 32-year-old man was arrested Thursday in University Place for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 worth of Legos from the Sasquatch Bricks Toy Store in February. Surveillance footage showed a man police later identified as Caylan Guerra pulling up to the toy store around 5 a.m. February 13 in a U-Haul truck before breaking in and filling the truck with stolen merchandise. After a months-long investigation that included surveillance of a nearby storage facility and tips from the public, deputies established probable cause for a warrant at a storage unit one mile away from the toy store, said public information officer deputy Carly Cappetto Saturday. When deputies arrived to serve the warrant on the storage unit they found Guerra asleep in his vehicle outside the unit, police said. A video published on Facebook by the Sheriff's Department Friday showed officers banging on Guerra's window and telling him to exit the vehicle on March 20. After officers broke one of his windows Guerra opened the door and was shoved to the ground and handcuffed before he was read his rights, according to the video and police reports. Upon opening the storage unit police found most of the stolen Legos, in addition to two bags of Fentanyl and two firearms (one of which was reported stolen), according to police reports. Guerra was also found to have 'a large amount of methamphetamine' and 'several debit cards … that did not belong to him' on his person. Guerra is currently in custody and has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property 1st Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 2nd Degree, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Control Substance with Intent to Distribute, and Obstructing Law Enforcement Officers. Guerra has pleaded not guilty and had an arraignment Friday, Cappetto said. His next hearing is scheduled for April 15, according to court records. Cappetto said Guerra has an extensive history of property crimes, drug crimes and weapons violations and described him as a 'career criminal' with a re-offending streak. Court records show Guerra has been previously convicted of driving while his license was suspended or revoked, trafficking stolen property, criminal mischief with a deadly weapon and controlled substance crimes. 'Here is a HUGE shoutout to the University Place Investigator for piecing all this together and finishing this Lego set,' the Sheriff's Department wrote on Facebook. 'Hopefully this suspect will stay in prison this time.'

Body cameras capture struggle during Pierce County DUI arrest
The Brief The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is ramping up DUI emphasis patrols for Saint Patrick's Day following a serious crash last weekend. Body camera video from March 15 shows deputies questioning the passenger and driver involved in the crash that injured a 62-year-old man. TACOMA, Wash. - Don't try your luck this Saint Patrick's Day. That's the message from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and other agencies as they ramp up DUI patrols for the holiday. Local perspective The increased patrols come on the heels of a serious DUI crash this weekend in Pierce County near 352nd Street East and Eatonville Cutoff Road East. "We clipped at the same time," said one of the men who was questioned following the crash Saturday. Body camera video from March 15 shows Pierce County deputies as they questioned the passenger and driver involved in the crash that injured a 62-year-old man. "So how much have we had to drink tonight?" asked the deputy. One of the men replied, "Me? I drank, I'm not driving, so..." The deputy responded to them, "OK, I don't believe that you're sober because your speech is low and slurred." One of the men answered, "Ok well, you can take it however you want." Body camera video also captured the damage done to the victim's car. "His car is, his car is destroyed," said the deputy on video. Deputies said the victim was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital. "Got the driver of the mustang extricated, put him on a gurney. Right now they are definitely going to transport him," said the deputy. It's those types of crashes that the sheriff's department says its DUI emphasis patrols are designed to prevent. "You can see that both the driver and the passenger are extremely intoxicated," said Carly Cappetto, Pierce County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer, about the men seen on video. Cappetto says the emphasis patrols were underway over the weekend and will continue overnight from Monday into Tuesday morning. "We are out there, and we are going to make arrests on these DUIs," said Cappetto. She says in the March 15 case, things went from bad to worse when a deputy tried to do a sobriety test with the driver. Both the driver and passenger are pictured below. "We'll walk over," said the deputy. "I'm going to walk with him,' the passenger responded. That's when the passenger refused to leave his side, resulting in a scuffle between the passenger and a deputy. The passenger was ultimately arrested for obstruction, and the driver, vehicular assault and DUI. Cappetto says it's better to designate a sober driver so you don't risk a serious legal hangover. "The biggest thing is, we want people to go out and celebrate and just plan to have safe rides home and just know that if you do choose to drive, we are out there, and we will catch you and arrest you," said Cappetto. Cappetto says Pierce County had a total of 213 DUIs that were processed in 2024. Looking at 2025, she says vehicular homicides and assaults are trending upward. Capetto says that due to the increased use of drugs by drivers, deputies are seeing a greater number of DUIs involving drugs currently than DUIs coming from alcohol use.
