USPS worker robbed at gunpoint on job, suspect arrested
'The suspect had walked up to him wearing this face mask and literally just pointed a gun at him,' Deputy Carly Cappetto said.
Pierce County shared body camera video where deputies found the postal worker after the robbery. He told deputies the person who robbed him was also wearing a ski mask and had taken off in a Maroon Kia. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says they were able to pull surveillance video from the surrounding neighborhood to get the license plate and direction of the vehicle; however, the license plate did not come back to the KIA which meant the vehicle was stolen.
Not long after the encounter, Lakewood Police spotted the maroon Kia, pursued the vehicle and shortly arrested the 33-year-old suspect. Lakewood officers and Pierce County deputies found the stolen mail keys, a gun and the ski mask matching the description from the postal worker. Deputy Cappetto says this sort of crime can have a horrific ripple affect across the community.
'And mail theft typically leads to a lot of other crimes such as fraud or impersonation or illegally submitted tax returns,' Deputy Cappetto said. 'It could be much more than mail theft. It could be a variety of other felony crimes and those could impact people's lives significantly,' she continued.
Police also found 3 passengers inside the stolen vehicle who were later released at the scene since they were not a part of the robbery. The suspect is in the Pierce County Jail facing charges ranging from eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle and a warrant for robbery charges. Deputy Cappetto says once the warrant is complete, robbery charges will come soon.

4 suspects linked to burglaries at Chicago businesses, police say; ATMs targeted or taken
Chicago police are looking for a group of four suspects they say are linked to multiple business burglaries on in the city that have targeted or taken ATMs. Police said in at least three incidents, the group have broken into stores by breaking the front glass window or door, then rummaged through the businesses to take property from inside. In one burglary, they stole a mobile ATM and a cash register, police said. In the second incident, they stole bottles of liquor and tried to take the mobile ATM but weren't able to. In each case, the suspects fled the scene in a 2018 white Kia SUV Sorrento that had been reported as stolen. The burglaries linked to these suspects happened on: Chicago police said in a fourth burglary in Evergreen Park involved suspects that matched the description of these suspects and their vehicle, but they have not formally connected it to the previous three incidents. Police had only a vague description of the burglars, saying they appear to be between 16 and 20 years old and wore black hooded sweatshirts, dark jeans and black ski masks. Boy trapped under car saved when witnesses gather to lift it, Florida cops say
A boy seen being 'dragged' under a slow-moving car was rescued when witnesses teamed up to lift the vehicle, according to investigators in Florida. The boy was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said in a news release. It happened around 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, on the first day of school in Deltona. 'The 14-year-old had been riding his bike to a private school, traveling east along Howland Boulevard on the sidewalk, when he approached Roble Lane,' the sheriff's office said. 'As the victim crossed Roble Lane in the crosswalk, the driver of a Kia Soul entered the crosswalk at a low speed attempting to turn onto Howland Boulevard. The vehicle struck the victim, dragged him about 15 feet, and stopped with the victim trapped under the vehicle.' Witnesses, including a tow truck driver, rushed to the car and worked together to 'lift the vehicle and move the victim to safety.' Investigators did not reveal how many people were needed to lift the Kia, which weighed nearly 3,000 pounds. 'The victim was wearing a helmet. Although injured, he was still conscious on scene,' officials said. 'Air One transported him as a trauma alert to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where at last check he was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.' The boy was riding an electric bike, or e-bike, which 'can travel faster than traditional bicycles,' the sheriff's office said. Investigators did not report details of charges in the case, and the driver's identity was not released. Deltona is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Orlando.

Runaway car hits Washington business multiple times in DIY tow-job gone very wrong
Surveillance video captured a failed self-tow in University Place, Washington, where a runaway car hit the same storefront multiple times before the would-be towers fled the scene. Pierce County sheriff's deputies were called to Pho and Teriyaki around 6 a.m. on July 30 after reports that a car had plowed into the restaurant. The maroon sedan was no longer inside the building but sat abandoned elsewhere in the same parking lot. An investigation involving the review of surveillance video showed that the driver of the sedan parked near AutoZone in the same strip mall at about 5:45 p.m. the day before the incident. Deputies learned the driver of the vehicle told store employees he would return and tow the vehicle away. At about 3:45 a.m., video shows a white Honda Pilot with a trailer dolly backing up to the broken-down vehicle and attempting to pull it away. 4 The incident was called into the police around 6 a.m. on July 30. Pierce County Sheriff's Office 4 After plowing into the restaurant, the maroon sedan was no longer inside the building, rather abandoned somewhere else in the parking lot. Pierce County Sheriff's Office An hour and a half later, the vehicle was finally pulled from the stall using a tow strap, which snapped once the vehicle was towed to the other end of the parking lot. The driver appeared to try and secure the vehicle again, but things got worse when the strap broke again. After the strap broke a second time, the car started to roll back toward the building and the driver was seen trying to stop the vehicle before it smashed into the restaurant. 4 The sedan had been in the plaza since the evening before the incident. Pierce County Sheriff's Office Undeterred, the driver tried again, nearly reaching the lot's exit before the strap failed a third time, sending the sedan back into the restaurant. On a third attempt, the driver and a female passenger freed the car, steered it toward the exit, then clipped a retaining wall and curb. The suspect ultimately gave up and left the vehicle behind before leaving the scene. 4 According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, the crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run.
