Angela Bassett Says It Was a 'Love Fest' Working with Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson on 'Doctor Odyssey' Crossover (Exclusive)

Angela Bassett, Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson coming together on the small screen, might as well call them the dream team! On the Thursday, March 20 episode of ABC's Doctor Odyssey, Bassett's Athena Grant from 9-1-1 — a series created by Ryan Murphy, like the medical drama — makes an unexpected appearance on Doctor Odyssey. Per a synopsis of the episode titled "Casino Week," Athena "spots two suspicious passengers eyeing the vault" and subsequently "teams up with Max (Jackson) to counter their plans in a high-stakes gamble." Filming the crossover episode provided Bassett, 66, the opportunity to work alongside Jackson, 46, Johnson, 75, Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale. Of getting to act with Jackson and Johnson, specifically, the honorary Academy Award winner tells PEOPLE exclusively that "it was absolutely wonderful meeting Joshua and Don" because she's "just big fans of their work." It was certain times I had to, with the guys especially, I would have to walk away, center myself because they have so much wonderful energy and so much to say," she continues. "They are just such a delight." "You have to remember that we're working here. We're working, and I would have a monologue of something to say and I just couldn't play with them up until the action," she says. "I would have to walk away just for a brief second to center myself, but it was a lot of fun." The Black Panther actress also notes that it "was just a great set to be on." "The camaraderie, the laughter. Laughter while you're up there working," she recalls. "The hours are long. But it was such a group of just wonderful and talented individuals. It reminded me of 9-1-1, the people that work with every day." Related: Will There Be a 9-1-1 Season 8? Everything We Know So Far Since 2018, Bassett has starred in eight seasons of 9-1-1 opposite Peter Krause, who plays her TV husband Bobby Nash. Working on the procedural has taught her to "continue to have the opportunity to hone your skills, to be forever grateful, to show up, to be there for others [and] to lead by example," she says. "I think those [were] things that I knew, but you have to just do it," she adds. "Be consistent. We [are] in our eighth year. So you have to be consistent." Ryan Murphy's ‘Doctor Odyssey' & ‘9-1-1' Set Crossover Episode On ABC

9-1-1's Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) is embarking on another cruise. Hopefully it won't end like her nearly disastrous honeymoon cruise with husband Bobby (Peter Krause) when their ship capsized in the Season 7 premiere of 9-1-1. This time she'll board The Odyssey and will meet up with the cruise ship's Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) in a special March 20 crossover episode for Ryan Murphy's 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey. The meet-up occurs during Casino Week aboard The Odyssey when 'unexpected guest Athena Grant (Bassett) suspects two passengers are targeting the ship's vault. Enlisting Max's help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand,' per the episode's logline. Murphy's American Horror Story also featured characters from various seasons seen in other installments. But this marks the first time that a Murphy crossover occurs between two series in different franchises. It also follows ABC's announcement that a new 9-1-1 spinoff set in Nashville has been ordered for the 2025-26 season. Both 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey make their midseason returns on Thursday, March 6. ‘9-1-1' and ‘Doctor Odyssey' Set ABC Crossover in March

'9-1-1' star Angela Bassett will appear on the March 20 episode of 'Doctor Odyssey,' TheWrap has learned. The two ABC shows are both Ryan Murphy productions. 'Doctor Odyssey,' which stars Joshua Jackson as cruise ship doctor Max Bankman, premiered last September, while Bassett's '9-1-1' is now in Season 8. 'It's Casino Week aboard The Odyssey, and unexpected guest Athena Grant suspects two passengers are targeting the ship's vault. Enlisting Max's help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand,' per the Hulu synopsis. When the first responder series moved from Fox to ABC for Season 7, it kicked off with a multi-episode arc that found Bassett's LAPD character finally taking a long-delayed honeymoon with husband Bobby (Peter Krause). Naturally, their cruise was interrupted by terrorists and a 'Poseidon Adventure'-inspired, ship-flipping disaster that required a dramatic and unapproved air rescue from their L.A. colleagues. On 'Doctor Odyssey,' Jackson's character took a job as a shipboard physician after a brush with death. Don Johnson plays the ship's captain, Phillipa Soo is nurse practitioner Avery Morgan and Sean Teale is nurse Tristan Silva. Both shows return from their winter breaks with new episodes on March 6; trailers for the next episodes tease a serial killer kidnapping on '9-1-1' and a shark attack on 'Doctor Odyssey.' On Thursday, ABC also announced it had picked up a full season for a third '9-1-1' series based in Nashville, which will debut in fall 2025. The series will feature a new cast of characters but has left room open for drop-ins for crews from Los Angeles' 118 and Austin's 126 fire stations. '9-1-1' airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, followed by 'Doctor Odyssey' at 9 p.m ET with episodes streaming on Hulu the following day.
