EXCLUSIVE I hosted the UK's most brutal property makeover show - homeowners sobbed and ripped into me off camera with a stinging question I still remember a decade later
The host of the UK's most brutal property makeover show has revealed her experience on the axed programme. Your Home In Their Hands first hit screens back in 2014 and lasted just one series on BBC One. The programme featured homeowners who gave amateur interior designers free reign to revamp their property. TV star and businesswoman Celia Sawyer presented the show and told MailOnline all about how she dealt with the highs, as well as the disappointed lows when the renovations didn't quite go to plan. From a flower wall in a hallway, to a cartoon style bedroom, Your Home In Their Hands saw a range of makeovers, but they weren't always well received by the homeowners. Several episodes saw the participants visibly upset, and some were very open in sharing their disappointment on air. However, Celia revealed to MailOnline that she received the brunt of the upset off camera, despite not being involved in the disastrous makeovers. 'I even had it myself where an owner would come back, where there was that interesting hallway, would come back and say to me, "do you like ruining people's homes?"' she said. 'And I thought, "well, I didn't." One, I didn't do it and and two, I would never have suggested somebody did.' The celebrity interior designer revealed that she had no say in the makeovers and wouldn't see the finished product until it was complete. She added: 'So when I walked in, I was as shocked as the homeowners, so unfortunately for me, I had to take it a bit from a couple of them who weren't very happy. 'But I think they forgot that actually I wasn't behind doing what they did, and I was given the brief by the clients, and then gave the brief to the amateur designers, and if they chose not to listen, because they'd already made up their minds, well, that's what they've done.' Celia admitted she tried to be 'compassionate' and did 'feel sorry' at times but added, 'if you volunteer, unfortunately, you're going to have to take that chance'. It wasn't just the homeowners who would get upset, some of the interior designers didn't handle the pressure well and Celia would end up comforting them too. 'I can't remember anyone's name now, but one lady was crying, and I said, 'You've got to pull yourself together, this isn't an easy job, you've come in, you've got to learn that it's tough, you know, and you've got to have some'. 'She was sort of going into the background, because the other designer was maybe a little bit stronger in personality and when they had to work together as a team, it was sort of dominated by somebody rather than both of them. 'So I did have to be quite stern about that, because the whole point was to bring in both parties together, not one to take over.' The glamorous TV presenter also admitted the designers 'didn't have have a lot of time' to pull off the makeovers and were expected to finish in 'a few days'. She recalled how they would 'work through quite late at night just to get everything done. It was almost like the minute I'd turned up, they'd just finished'. However, when things turned out drastically wrong producers would sometimes step in to put things right afterwards, according to Celia. Your Home In Their Hands did see some positive outcomes too, Celia recalled 'an older lady who loved her bedroom' but sadly passed away shortly afterwards. 'There were lovely stories throughout, I mean, sometimes it wasn't every room that they loved, but generally out of the two, three rooms, because they did a joint room, and obviously two separate rooms, the two designers, if you've got two out of three, then I think that was pretty good going,' she said. All episodes of Your Home In Their Hands are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Woman breaks down in tears after 'nightmare' home makeover leaves hallway 'looking like a black hole' - and swipes 'was the designer off his head?!'
A woman broke down in tears after a 'nightmare' home makeover left her hallway 'looking like a black hole'. The show, titled Your Home In Their Hands, aired on screens for just one series between 2014 and 2015 on BBC One. It saw homeowners give amateur interior designers free reign to revamp their property and was presented by Celia Sawyer. One episode saw a couple, Steve and June, left baffled by their makeover after the designers added a plant wall to their entrance and fish tanks in the walls of their staircase. 'That's different isn't in,' Steve apprehensively commented while his partner added: 'I wasn't expecting this.' 'I'm very shocked, it's not my hug I wanted. I don't really like the colour and I'm not sure about the carpet,' she said, looking down at the green flooring that resembled grass. She then went on to admit: '... at this moment in time, I'm regretting it'. June batted plants out of the way as the pair looked at the fish tanks in the walls. She commented: 'I'm assuming it's Rowan who's done this, I think he's off his head!' The couple then made their way upstairs to the bedroom which was painted in a garish blue and pale pink. 'Where's all the clothes going to go?' June asked as she looked at a small blue wardrobe in the corner of the room. Despite the contrasting colour scheme and storage concerns, she admitted: 'I quite like it though.' Steve looked doubtful and replied: 'Well, good.' Celia asked: 'So June, do you think this is what you were looking for? You wanted something more feminine?' One episode saw a couple, Steve and June (left), left baffled by their makeover after the designers added plant wall to their entrance and fish tanks in the walls of their staircase 'I don't dislike it,' June said. 'But I'm just worried about where we're going to put everything.' However, overall it wasn't what she was hoping for and she explained, 'The light I really wanted isn't there, so for that I'm disappointed.' 'Walking into the hallway was a nightmare for me because I was so worried it was so radical and it was very obvious walking in that June hated it,' Celia commented. 'There's no light in there, it's going to be like a black hole of clutter,' Jane said. 'I know how much time and effort Steve has put into the house and now I feel like I've taken it away from him,' she added tearfully. 'I feel I've let him down.' She cried as Steve hugged her and said: 'No you haven't.' Another episode saw a grimacing man rage 'it's an absolute mess!' after a BBC home makeover from hell that 'couldn't be any worse'. Couple John and Rachel Geoghegan appeared on Your Home In Their Hands 10 years ago. The pair had opposing preferences, with Rachel wanting more colour, while John was a fan of more plain interiors. At the end of the episode interior designer Celia Sawyer took them around their new home - and they were very pleased with the living room. However things took a nasty turn when they were shown their new bedroom.

Woman gasps 'what have we done?!' as she faces disastrous home makeover - while seething husband fumes 'the designer should be locked in a cupboard!'
A woman gasped 'what have we done?!' as she faced a disastrous home makeover in a previous episode of Your Home In Their Hands. The British makeover show, which only aired six episodes across one series, was on our screens between September 2014 and February 2015. The premises of the programme is that home owners give all their trust to designers to totally transform their pads - however they have no idea that they are just amateur designers. Although the show was on our screens a decade ago, there are some pretty hilarious moments from it that stand out as iconic television. The first ever episode, which is presented by Celia Sawyer, sees Kelly and Andy - from Hatfield - want something a little bit different. Kelly explained that she wants something with colour, whereas her partners would be happy with a 'tin of white paint'. The British makeover show, which only aired six episodes across one series, was on our screens between September 2014 and February 2015 At the end of the instalment they were shown their brand new home. As they walked into the bedroom, they both said: 'Oh my God.' Kelly added: 'What have we done?!' She continued: 'I don't like the tapestries, I don't like the red ceiling. What about you?' Celia told Andy: 'You've got to be honest.' Andy bluntly said: 'I don't like it.' Celia asked: 'Does this make you think perhaps Kelly's feature wall was actually not that vibrant and bold after all?' Andy replied: 'Maybe it was quite safe.' Kelly chimed in: 'At least I only had one wall... This is every wall isn't it?!' Celia asked if they wanted her to relay any messages back to the designers. Andy replied: 'I'd like Nick to take control and Kirsty maybe locked in the cupboard.' Kelly said: 'This is colour overload I think, definitely. 'The red and all the tapestry on the wall is way too much. ' Many have rushed to YouTube to share their thoughts on the segment. 'Just watched a few clips of this show. Every room is horrible.. are they doing this on purpose?' Many rushed to the comments section on YouTube to share their thoughts - and while mostly were negative, there was also some positive ones 'I feel like they do it on purpose.' 'Oh my God, not an inch of that room that doesn't give me a headache.' 'How the hell did this get the approval of a whole team? I can only imagine a very few selection of 7 year old girls liking this.. 'Looks like everything's been wrapped in the foil papers you used to back your books with at school. Awful.' But others shared that they were a fan of the new interior. 'Not gonna lie I like it lmao. Except for the random things on the walls. ' 'I like it.' 'I love the colors.' It comes after a grimacing man raged 'it's an absolute mess!' after being shown his new bedroom on the TV show. John couldn't hide how unimpressed he was with the interior moments after opening their eyes. Celia asked: 'What do you think Rachel?... You've got your colour!' After a very awkward silence she replied: 'Yeah I do. I like the wardrobes and...' John chimed in: 'Nah it's too much. For me it's too busy. I wouldn't have done anything like it and I don't like it. 'You're supposed to be able to go to sleep in a bedroom and it's like a kid's play area. 'I think it looks horrendous. It doesn't look anything like a bedroom. 'Sorry it's a big thumbs down from me. It's hideous. I think its even too much for Rachel if she were to tell the truth.' Celia was keen to find out her thoughts and asked: 'Is it, Rachel?' John didn't hold back and told the presenter: 'Nah it's too much. For me it's too busy. I wouldn't have done anything like it and I don't like it' Rachel sheepishly confessed: 'I do like... I do like the bed and the wardrobes... 'I like the theme of it.' Celia added: 'So overall you quite like it?' 'Hmm... yeah,' Rachel said. A very unimpressed John simply chimed in: 'It's rank. I don't like it at all. Definitely not.' Celia tried to change the mood and told him: 'I think Rachel likes it though, John? 'I know you're telling her she doesn't, but I think she does!' John told the presenter: 'I'll leave it to her.' Celia hit back: 'But you're answering for her! I haven't heard much out of Rachel's mouth actually. Come on, Rachel!' 'I think it'll grow on us, I like, I like the bed and the wardrobes, I did ask for colour,' Rachel said. John told the presenter: 'If Rachel likes it, so be it.' 'So if Rachel likes it, can you keep it the same?' Celia asked. And John told her: 'Not for long.' Celia then questioned John and said: 'So you were going to accept what Rachel wanted, you said if she's happy she's fine, what you're saying now, it isn't fine?' John didn't hold back with his opinion and told the host: 'It's rank. Horrible. Nah. Sorry. It's not for me.' Celia wanted to know if he had a message for the designer, to which he said: 'Don't touch the other room.' After taking a moment and reflecting away from the bedroom, Rachel said: 'We took a chance when we handed the keys over. She's done colour. What I asked for. It might grow on you.' John simply replied: 'Fungus grows - that's horrible.' Many rushed to share their thoughts on whether Rachel actually liked the new look, while others couldn't contain their laughter. 'The first room was horrendous as well and I do believe the wife hates the bedroom as well. She looks like she is holding back the tears.' '"It might grow on you." "Fungus grows." [laughing emojis].' '"I've not heard much from Rachel" Rachel can't speak as she's holding tears [laughing emojis].' 'Lmaoooo 'So, What message do you have for the designer?' — 'Dont touch the other room'.' Many rushed to the comments section on YouTube to share their thoughts on the moment that happened back in 2015 'The level of second hand embarrassment here was overwhelming [laughing emojis].' 'Rachel looks like she's holding back tears. I agree with the husband. I think Rachel's too polite because she did ask for colour.' 'I'd LOVE to know what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. What the couple did next?' The synopsis of Your Home In Their Hands reads: 'Makeover show in which desperate homeowners hand over their door keys to amateur interior designers, hoping they can solve their design dilemmas.'

The BBC home renovation that left woman sobbing 'I hate it!' - and horrified viewers jeering 'it's like something from a horror film!'
Your Home In Their Hands follows a group of amateur interior designers as they set about providing their services to homeowners across the UK. However, things aren't always smooth sailing, as teenage guest Jess Daley found out in the final episode of the series. She was left crestfallen and tearful, admitting 'I hate it' as she was presented with her cartoon-themed bedroom, brought to life by the show's design apprentices. The show debuted in 2014, staying on air for one series total, and followed homeowners who, unsure of where to begin on their design ideas, request the help of the show's amateur designers. The designers get to work, under the watchful eye of interior designer Celia Sawyer, but this particular episode ended in disaster when the Daley family were left unimpressed and sobbing following the big reveal. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Inside Jess' room, the amateur designers took the Cartoon theme to the next level, painting the teen's bedroom a stark white, before pencilling black crayon outlines on the windows, walls and wardrobes. The room looked like a 5 year old's drawing book, and the young Ms Daley couldn't hold back her emotion, saying 'No, I hate it. I think it's just more childish than I wanted it to be, a lot more childish than I want it to be. In all fairness.' Attempting to shine a positive light on the situation, the host intervened, suggesting, 'Nobody, none of your friends are gonna have a room like this. None of them.' However, Jess's father responded, noting that the room's abstract uniqueness was probably why Jess didn't like it, Viewers seconded his opinion, commenting on the room's obnoxious extravagance: 'The cartoon sketches on the walls didn't even appear to be properly painted nor did it have like a style. It just looked like a random bloke was given some paint and a brush. 'That girl's bedroom looks like something that you find in a serial killers house where he keeps his victims. Absolutely horrendous.' 'Come on that girl's room was terrible. Looked like my 8 year old wrote on the wall.' 'What theme did they choose? Horror? The bedroom looks like a poorly equipped Spooky House-Escape Room. The girl's room looked like something a psychotic little ghost girl would inhabit and paint in, before she lures you somewhere else and murder you. And who could sleep with that creepy lamphead-mannequin at the end of the bed facelessly staring at you.' 'The teenager's room looks like they've stepped into a version of the Take On Me music video.' Jess wasn't the only member of the family facing a difficult reality that day; her father also experienced a harsh reality stepping into his own bedroom. 'I think it looks smaller!' he exclaimed, before admitting that there were many elements of the room that rubbed him the wrong way: 'I don't particularly like the case. I really don't like the squirrel. 'Not a big fan of the pearls. I don't like the drawers, I don't like the mannequin. And I really, I'm very undecided about the curtain effect.'
