EXCLUSIVE I hosted the UK's most brutal property makeover show - homeowners sobbed and ripped into me off camera with a stinging question I still remember a decade later

Daily Mail29-06-2025
The host of the UK's most brutal property makeover show has revealed her experience on the axed programme.
Your Home In Their Hands first hit screens back in 2014 and lasted just one series on BBC One.
The programme featured homeowners who gave amateur interior designers free reign to revamp their property.
TV star and businesswoman Celia Sawyer presented the show and told MailOnline all about how she dealt with the highs, as well as the disappointed lows when the renovations didn't quite go to plan.
From a flower wall in a hallway, to a cartoon style bedroom, Your Home In Their Hands saw a range of makeovers, but they weren't always well received by the homeowners.
Several episodes saw the participants visibly upset, and some were very open in sharing their disappointment on air.
However, Celia revealed to MailOnline that she received the brunt of the upset off camera, despite not being involved in the disastrous makeovers.
'I even had it myself where an owner would come back, where there was that interesting hallway, would come back and say to me, "do you like ruining people's homes?"' she said.
'And I thought, "well, I didn't." One, I didn't do it and and two, I would never have suggested somebody did.'
The celebrity interior designer revealed that she had no say in the makeovers and wouldn't see the finished product until it was complete.
She added: 'So when I walked in, I was as shocked as the homeowners, so unfortunately for me, I had to take it a bit from a couple of them who weren't very happy.
'But I think they forgot that actually I wasn't behind doing what they did, and I was given the brief by the clients, and then gave the brief to the amateur designers, and if they chose not to listen, because they'd already made up their minds, well, that's what they've done.'
Celia admitted she tried to be 'compassionate' and did 'feel sorry' at times but added, 'if you volunteer, unfortunately, you're going to have to take that chance'.
It wasn't just the homeowners who would get upset, some of the interior designers didn't handle the pressure well and Celia would end up comforting them too.
'I can't remember anyone's name now, but one lady was crying, and I said, 'You've got to pull yourself together, this isn't an easy job, you've come in, you've got to learn that it's tough, you know, and you've got to have some'.
'She was sort of going into the background, because the other designer was maybe a little bit stronger in personality and when they had to work together as a team, it was sort of dominated by somebody rather than both of them.
'So I did have to be quite stern about that, because the whole point was to bring in both parties together, not one to take over.'
The glamorous TV presenter also admitted the designers 'didn't have have a lot of time' to pull off the makeovers and were expected to finish in 'a few days'.
She recalled how they would 'work through quite late at night just to get everything done. It was almost like the minute I'd turned up, they'd just finished'.
However, when things turned out drastically wrong producers would sometimes step in to put things right afterwards, according to Celia.
Your Home In Their Hands did see some positive outcomes too, Celia recalled 'an older lady who loved her bedroom' but sadly passed away shortly afterwards.
'There were lovely stories throughout, I mean, sometimes it wasn't every room that they loved, but generally out of the two, three rooms, because they did a joint room, and obviously two separate rooms, the two designers, if you've got two out of three, then I think that was pretty good going,' she said.
All episodes of Your Home In Their Hands are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Vanessa Feltz's ex Ben Ofoedu 'takes yet another swipe at the TV star' while on his honeymoon with new wife 'Vanessa 2.0'

Ben Ofoedu appeared to take another swipe at his ex Vanessa Feltz as he enjoyed his honeymoon this week after marrying his new bride, who he shamelessly calls 'Vanessa 2.0'. The Phats & Small singer, 52, was previously set to marry the TV personality, 63, until reports of his infidelity were leaked to the press in 2023. He has since moved on with aesthetics expert Vanessa Brown, who is 23 years his junior, marrying in a lavish £100,000 ceremony in Cumbria. However, despite his romance with Celebrity Big Brother star Vanessa ending two years ago, Ben has previously made a savage dig at his ex, claiming he'd 'wasted 17 years' in their relationship. And now on his honeymoon he appears to have taken another dig at Vanessa as he celebrated his new wife's 30th birthday this weekend in Lake Garda. As they enjoyed a drink out Ben filmed her before turning the camera back to himself to show he was wearing a black cap with '2.0' on it. After brazenly calling his new wife 'Vanessa 2.0' previously the hat could be another dig at his former partner. Ben captioned the post: 'Jay-Z's quote is, 'Men lie, women lie, but numbers don't.' It comes after in an exclusive Mail+ interview, Ben reflected on his relationship with the former This Morning agony aunt Feltz, stating: 'Never again will I do that. I wasted 17 years of my life. 'I don't believe in long engagements any more. You don't want to get married if there's a question mark over your engagement. 'If you don't want to commit to someone, that's fine. But don't pretend you do and hold on to someone for a long period of time. Let them free, let them fly.' Speaking of his joy at finally becoming a husband, Ben shared: 'I have been waiting for this feeling, I have always wanted to be married since I was seven years old. I always wanted to be with someone who would take my surname. 'I almost gave up on marriage, thinking there wasn't a lady that would walk down the aisle for me. 'I can't believe the day has come, it is a dream come true. It feels like I've been waiting for this moment all my life. This is the finale of the chapter that was 17 years of my life.' After undergoing therapy in the wake of their split, the DJ – who refuses to mention Feltz by name 'ever again' – said the torrid experience gave him clarity. Ben captioned the post: 'Jay-Z's quote is, ''Men lie, women lie, but numbers don't''' along with red heart emojis 'I knew what I was getting into going out with someone that talks about their sex life on TV. What did I expect? It was great media attention for her. I went into it with my eyes wide open thinking it wouldn't affect me, but it did.' As he surveyed the crowd of loved ones, Ofoedu reflected that the most valuable outcome of his break-up with Feltz was 'finding out who my real friends are'. He said: 'I thought I was friends with everyone but people acted differently towards me [after the break up]. At the time it hurt me but it turned out to be great because it showed me who actually had my back – every member of Boyzone and a couple of boys from Blu who couldn't be here. 'But I know she [Vanessa Feltz] will look at these pictures today and see that everyone here knows the truth about our relationship and the narrative she spun. 'This love with Vanessa [Brown] has made me realise that the other one didn't love me as much as she made out, we had two different definitions of love.' Insisting he didn't want to make his special day about the 'past', Ofoedu added: 'All of that was worth it and everything happens for a reason because I've found my perfect person. 'The main thing now [is] it's ended happily ever after for me – getting married in a beautiful castle in Carlisle and I'm happy. 'Vanessa is the woman of my dreams, our connection was instant and when I found out she was dreaming of a beautiful white wedding fit for a princess, I thought, 'Ben, it's time to get your Prince Charming boots on and be the fairytale prince she's always dreamed of'. 'As I look back at our beautiful romance it has confirmed my belief that true love is waiting around the corner – you just have to keep the faith.' Bride Vanessa echoed the sentiment, beaming as she recalled how their connection had been 'instant', adding: 'It was like everything suddenly made sense. When you know, you know.' She revealed the couple hope to start a family within the next year and are planning a business venture together. Though the new bride didn't shy away from referencing her husband's former relationship, she dismissed the negativity surrounding it. She said: 'When it comes to his last relationship, a lot of it is spiteful and untrue. 'I'm the right person for him. Their relationship ended for reasons the public weren't aware of. Everyone always says they have never seen Ben as happy as he is now. 'That's a testament to where he is in his life. He's completely fulfilled when previously he wasn't. 'To be honest I don't care whatsoever, I couldn't care less about her. She is his ex – I have exes – and they're in the past. 'Why would you care?' Brown adds, talking about Feltz. 'Enjoy your retirement, your family and just chill. Stop talking about it, it's so tragic! 'Part of me feels sorry for her but it's my life and I don't care.'

Sunday Brunch viewers are left in a frenzy just minutes into the show's latest episode

Sunday Brunch viewers were left in a frenzy just minutes into the show's latest episode, and quickly took to X to share their thoughts. The Channel 4 programme returned on Sunday with Tom Grennan, Caity Baser, Susie Dent, Alfie Allen, Conor MacNeill and Joy Crookes as guests. But despite Tom Grennan headlining Radio 1's Big Weekend and Caity Baser having a huge social media following and touring the UK, viewers were left unhappy as they claimed they barely knew the guests. Aside from Countdown's Susie Dent, many fans were left unsure on who the other guests were and flocked to social media to share their thoughts. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, posts included: 'I know 3 of them, its a WR for me. #sundaybrunch.' '#sundaybrunch @sundaybrunch Susie Dent is the only one I have heard of due to Countdown.' ;'I know 2 of them this week #sundaybrunch .' The complaints come after presenter Morgan McGlynn Carr has shared a health update with fans after she revealed she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. The TV star and author, 38, who has a regular spot as a cheese expert on the show, recently posted a picture of her from her hospital bed as she announced the 'earth shattering' news. In October 2024, Morgan received her diagnosis after finding a lump in her right breast and received six months of weekly chemotherapy. On two occasions doctors told the mother-of-one the lump was breast-feeding related, but after having a gut feeling something still wasn't quite right she went for a third opinion and got her diagnosis - which she says 'saved her life'. Now, Morgan has shared a positive health update with fans as she appeared on the latest episode of the Channel 4 show on Sunday. Speaking to hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy, she broke down in tears as she told the anchors she's been given 'the all clear'. While fighting back tears, she explained: 'As some of you know and some of you don't, I'm already wobbling, I am sorry.' Tim then reached to comfort Morgan before she continued: 'I got diagnosed with breast cancer last October, so we got the all clear, like a week ago.' But despite Tom Grennan headlining Radio 1's Big Weekend and Caity Baser having a huge social media following and touring the UK, viewers were left unhappy as they claimed they barely knew the guests The complaints come after presenter Morgan McGlynn Carr has shared a health update with fans after she revealed she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer In a touching moment, the entire studio then erupted into applause for Morgan as she was visibly taken aback by the reaction. She added: 'I was just going to say, check your lumps, your bumps and trust your gut and yeah, that's it really.' The Cheese expert added thanked everyone again for the support she's received, saying: 'Yes, I've been taken on surprise trips and I've had the biggest support system including you guys as well.' Morgan has graced the screen alongside Sunday Brunch hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer since 2016. The cheese presenter confirmed she is now 'healing' as she joyfully admitted she received some 'very, very good news' following surgery last month. Sharing her journey, she wrote: 'On the eve of my daughter's first birthday, I found a lump in my right breast. I'd recently stopped breastfeeding and assumed it was related. 'But my husband made me promise to go to the doctor first thing Monday - and, by pure chance it happened to be CoppaFeel! Week. My feed was full of women talking about breast cancer. 'The GP said it was definitely breastfeeding-related. The breast clinic consultant said she was 99% sure it was nothing. 'I got a third opinion and that decision saved my life... Trust your gut. Always. 'After scans, biopsies, mammograms, CTs, MRIs - in October 2024, I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. It was nothing short of earth-shattering. 'But we've done our best to keep life feeling normal as possible for our daughter. Treatment is different for every person. No two paths are the same. But here's what happened to me: 'I was given a week before chemo to get my ducks in a row, which included chopping my hair off and IVF and egg retrival, something I'm incredibly grateful I was able to do. 'Then came six months of weekly chemotherapy. The hardest thing I've ever done. Some weeks I sat for 13 hours at a time, and I was never alone thanks to my friends who kept me company. On two occasions doctors told the mother-of-one the lump was breast-feeding related, but after having a gut feeling something still wasn't quite right she went for a third opinion and got her diagnosis - which she says 'saved her life 'And those who've been through the cold cap you'll known it's no joke. I had to catch my breath and get through the hardest parts before sharing this. So why now? 'Because if even one person sees this, and it prompts them to check a lump or get a second opinion, it could save a life. Please, trust your gut.' Morgan revealed she had a successful surgery last month and received some 'very good news' a few days ago. She continued: 'Two weeks ago, I had surgery - and a few days later, we got some very, very good news. 'I've not really known how to share this. To be honest, I'm still finding my feet after everything.' Morgan added: 'This year has changed me. There's still a road to recovery to come - but I'm here, I'm healing, and I'm more grateful than I've been.' Morgan is the UK's leading cheese expert and owner of Cheeses of Muswell Hill, an award-winning independent cheese shop in North London. She is also a top judge at the World Cheese Awards. What is triple negative breast cancer? Triple negative breast cancer is a form of the disease that does not have receptors for the hormones oestrogen or progesterone, or the protein HER2. This makes it trickier to treat due to the tumour not responding to these hormonal or protein therapies. Triple negative breast cancer makes up around 10-to-20 per cent of all forms of the disease. It tends to be more aggressive than other breast tumours, with patients having a worse prognosis. The condition is more common in those under 40 and black women. It is diagnosed via a sample of the cancerous cells. Symptoms are similar to other forms of breast cancer. These can include: Lump or thickening in the breast Change in the size, shape or feel of the breast Dimpling of the skin Change in the shape of the nipple Rash or blood-stained discharge coming from the nipple Swelling in the armpit Treatment usually involves surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. Chemo may be given first to shrink the tumour before a patient goes under the knife. It may also be given after the operation to prevent the disease returning.
