Opposition senses ‘opportunity' in electoral roll revision, frequently rakes up issue
Patna: During the 2020 , the opposition Grand Alliance (GA) missed forming the govt by a whisker. Five years later, the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission ahead of the polls in the state has come as a blessing in disguise for GA, feel poll analysts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now GA is armed with a prominent issue that is supposedly causing confusion among electors, they said. Cashing in on the 'opportunity', leader of opposition in the state assembly, , along with INDIA bloc allies, is raking up the concerns of voters almost daily. So far, he has held around six press conferences over the issue, indicating the significance of the issue, while the NDA has held none. The opposition is finding it a major opportunity to reach out to a large number of voter, cashing in on the anger gripping them. "First, your name will be deleted from the voter list, and in due course, you will lose benefits from all welfare schemes that you might be getting now, one by one," Tejashwi has repeatedly warned at press conferences. Explaining how the deletion of names of the voter proves disastrous for the poor, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said on Tuesday: "Deletion of names from the voter list means losing every govt facility." He said the biggest loss the people could face is not getting 5 kg free ration. Of the total population of 10.41 crore, as per the 2011 census, the total number of beneficiaries under the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in Bihar is around 8.71 crore, which comes to 84% of the total population. They will also not be getting houses under PM Awas Yojana, pension and other such facilities. Social scientist B N Prasad said the EC has launched such a big campaign, but the methodology remains unclear. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "It is not clear if the BLOs are visiting door to door to deliver/collect enumeration forms. No BLO has visited my home so far. Also, the voices coming from the grassroots do not appear fair or accurate," Prasad, who works with the AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies, told the TOI. "This is a theatre of the absurd," said former principal of Patna College, N K Chaudhary, while reacting to the opposition's hullabaloo over the SIR issue. "But EC should have given more time and increased the number of documents required to be submitted with the filled-up enumeration forms," he said. The opposition has found a potent issue—much like in the 2015 Bihar polls, when NDA's lead crumbled after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a review of the reservation policy. RJD chief Lalu Prasad turned it into an 'opportunity', warning voters that the RSS-BJP aimed to dismantle the quota system.

RSS has stood the test of time, says Udupi MP
Mangaluru: BJP MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has strongly defended the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) against recent calls for its ban by Congress leaders, stating that even former Prime Ministers Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi failed in similar at-tempts. 'Dr B.R. Ambedkar once praised the RSS for its casteless and untouchability-free structure. Even Nehru, after initially trying to ban the RSS, invited it to the Republic Day parade,' he said. Poojary criticised senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and B.K. Hariprasad for what he described as 'casual and misleading' remarks against the RSS. He chal-lenged them to visit an RSS shakha and understand its philosophy rooted in national-ism. On state politics, Poojary took aim at the Congress government in Karnataka, warn-ing of an impending 'administrative collapse' if internal leadership issues are not ad-dressed. 'There is already talk of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah being replaced. Offi-cials are uncertain, and governance is suffering,' he said. He also questioned the state's finances, alleging that there's no money left for basic infrastructure such as shoes and socks in government schools. 'This government is functioning on pretence and borrowed time,' he added. Poojary welcomed the High Court's stay on the state government's decision to close down Jan Aushadhi Kendras and called on the Congress to stop blocking Centre-sponsored welfare programmes.

L-G gives nod to initiate action against PWD ex-engineer over irregularities in construction of classrooms in Delhi
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved a proposal from the Directorate of Vigilance to start disciplinary proceedings against a former executive engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) over alleged irregularities and fund mismanagement in the construction of 226 classrooms under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. According to a statement shared by the L-G house on Thursday, the engineer has been transferred out of Delhi and is currently posted with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) in Amritsar, Punjab. This decision follows alleged irregularities identified in the implementation of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, a Centre-sponsored initiative aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure in Delhi, which was allocated Rs 38.37 crore for the construction of 226 classrooms across various schools, said officials. 'The situation escalated when a public interest litigation titled Social Jurist, a Civil Rights Group v/s GNCTD and Ors. was filed in the Delhi High Court on June 11, 2019, seeking a directive for the government to hand over possession of six newly constructed school buildings…,' an official added. After the PIL was filed, officials said, the then Chief Secretary probed the matter, during which significant 'irregularities in construction practices and fund management' were uncovered. A committee was also constituted in this matter last year in March to examine the matter. 'The committee's findings, reported last year in May, revealed several lapses on the part of the PWD, including the diversion of funds intended for the construction of 20 classrooms at Trinagar School to Rani Bagh School and the construction of a multi purpose hall without obtaining the necessary approvals. Furthermore, the PWD failed to promptly address site issues, making decisions that lacked proper authority and oversight,' said officials. 'The misconduct in question dates back to 2019, but the case against another officer is considered time-barred due to his retirement from government service. The DOV's proposal has received endorsement from both the Principal Secretary (Vigilance) and the Chief Secretary,' the official added.

Mobile Rescue Teams To Uplift Maharashtra's Street Children: Statewide Rollout Under Mission Vatsalya
Last Updated: The initiative focuses on reaching out to homeless children, orphans, those with single parents, or those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds living on the streets The Maharashtra women and child development department has expanded its 'mobile rescue teams" initiative across the state, aiming to integrate street children into mainstream society and education. Launched in 2022-23 as a pilot project under the Centre-sponsored Mission Vatsalya scheme, the initiative was first implemented in six major municipal areas: Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Mumbai Suburban. Following its success, the state cabinet has approved its expansion to all 29 municipal corporation areas of Maharashtra. The initiative focuses on reaching out to homeless children, orphans, those with single parents, or those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds living on the streets. Women and child development minister Aditi Tatkare, announcing the state cabinet decision on May 13, 2025, stated that denying these children their fundamental rights to education and healthcare constitutes social injustice. 'The mobile rescue team scheme is more than a welfare initiative; it is a movement for social change. Every smile we restore to a child's face is a measure of this scheme's success," she said. The mobile units provide on-site medical aid, counselling, Aadhaar registration, and facilitate enrolment into anganwadis or residential schools. Children without family support are placed in child-care institutions, ensuring their immediate safety and long-term rehabilitation. The pilot phase yielded positive results, reaching 3,813 street children with services such as health screenings, nutritional assistance, and educational access. With the recent cabinet approval, Rs 8.06 crore will be allocated to deploy 31 mobile vans across 29 cities. The department is also contemplating future expansion into smaller towns, religious pilgrimage sites, and temple precincts, where many street children are often found. In collaboration with local NGOs, the initiative also offers de-addiction support, addresses malnutrition, and provides professional therapy for adolescents, ensuring a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. By providing access to education, healthcare, and emotional support, the mobile rescue teams aim to transform the lives of vulnerable children. The scheme not only caters to their immediate needs but also encourages reintegration into families or institutional support systems, highlighting the government's commitment to inclusive and child-centric development.
