Orlando Pirates plot surprise goalkeeper move

Orlando Pirates are actively considering bringing in a new top-tier goalkeeper to challenge their current No. 1, Sipho Chaine, in a move that could shake up the club's goalkeeping department. Despite Chaine's incredible performances last season, including his Goalkeeper of the Season win in the Betway Premiership, sources have revealed that the Soweto giants want to strengthen the position further. 'Chaine was usually in the starting line-up,' a reflection of how much coach José Riveiro trusted him, even during congested fixture periods. Melusi Buthelezi, still on the Pirates' books, faces an uncertain future. The former TS Galaxy keeper has struggled to impress, and concerns persist over his consistency and tendency to commit errors when given opportunities. Insiders suggest that the potential arrival of another high-calibre goalkeeper could spell trouble for Buthelezi, who has failed to cement a reliable backup role. Chaine joined Pirates from Chippa United initially expected to play a supporting role. However, he swiftly dethroned Richard Ofori and established himself as the club's undisputed first choice, featuring in an impressive 47 matches across all competitions. His standout performances helped Pirates reach the CAF Champions League semifinals, where they eventually fell to Egyptian giants Pyramids FC over two legs. With the transfer window open until late September. Orlando Pirates have ample time to scout and secure a new goalkeeper. No specific names have surfaced yet. The club's intention to inject fresh competition into the squad remains clear. Who should Orlando Pirates sign between the posts? Pirates' Chaine, Makhaula prizes at PSL awards trigger controversy

There was no disputing Lucas Ribeiro Costa's winning of the biggest honours at the PSL Awards on Tuesday, but controversy reigned in other categories as fans debated whether some prizes went to worthy winners. The biggest controversy and debate on social media — mostly aligned along club lines — was around the Midfielder and Goalkeeper of the Season winners. Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates claimed the best keeper gong ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns' Ronwen Williams and Magesi FC's Elvis Chipezeze. Many felt Chaine should not have won ahead of Chipezeze, who was outstanding for Magesi and kept the most clean sheets last season. Chaine featured in 25 Premiership matches for the Buccaneers last season. He kept 11 clean sheets and conceded 18 goals, while Williams who played just 16 league games for Masandawana, also kept 11 clean sheets and conceded just six goals. #PSLAwards25: @orlandopirates ' Sipho Chaine is the #BetwayPrem Goalkeeper of the Season. — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) July 29, 2025 Despite being level on the same number of clean sheets as Chaine, it seems the number of games Williams played was a disadvantage for him. Chipezeze, however, featured 26 times in the league but conceded 28 goals and kept 10 clean sheets. A major factor should also be that Chipezeze's team Magesi has limited financial resources. Pirates' Makhehlene Makhaula won Midfielder of the Season ahead of Marcelo Allende and Teboho Mokoena of Sundowns. This has also sparked heated debate and the stats seem to back up the argument that Allende should have emerged victorious. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒/𝟐𝟓 𝐏𝐒𝐋 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 🏆 Congratulations to Makhehleni Makhaula — Betway Midfielder of the Season ⚫⚪🔴⭐ #OrlandoPirates #OnceAlways — Orlando Pirates (@orlandopirates) July 29, 2025 Makhaula, 35, had an outstanding campaign, featuring in 22 league matches. But Allende was one of the standout players for eight-time successive league winners Sundowns, playing 24 matches and providing four assists. Mokoena played 23 league matches and scored two goals while providing three assists. The conveners for both the Midfielder and the Goalkeeper of the Season awards could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, who was crowned Coach of the Season, was pleased with the recognition he received. 'I feel privileged to have received the award. It's a reflection of the work of many people who are behind the scenes and who support the work of the coach,' he said. 'I dedicate this award to my players. They are the face and allow us coaches to be successful. 'To the management of the club that believed in me and to our fans, it is an award that reflects good work and many fantastic moments we had together.'

PSL Awards: Orlando Pirates star named the best goalkeeper

Orlando Pirates star goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Season award. Chaine was nominated alongside Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns and Elvis Chipezeze of Magesi FC. And in the end, it was the Bucs goalkeeper who proved to have done enough to win the accolades at the PSL Awards on Tuesday. Chaine featured in 25 Betway Premiership matches for Pirates last season, kept 11 cleansheets and conceded just 18. Williams, on the other hand, played just 16 league games for Sundowns, kept 11 cleansheets and conceded just six goals. And despite being tied on the same number of cleansheets with Chaine, the number of games he played disadvantaged him. Chipezeze, who had a fantastic season with 26 league matches under his belt, was let down by the number of goals he conceded (28) despite keeping 10 cleansheets. Nonetheless, he was also one of the winners in the Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament category where he was nominated alongside teammate Edmore Chirambadare and Iqraam Rayners of Sundowns. Meanwhile, Letlapa headlines a list of names linked with Orlando Pirates Is Kekana the best PSL player in history? Hlompho Kekana was a combative and explosive character on the pitch, but off it, he's as humble as they come. Regarded by his teammates as a model professional and example, he took care of his body and was fit as a fiddle even at the ripe age of 36. Also, his devotion to a healthy diet didn't do him any harm either. The retired midfield general remains popular with journalists, too, having always made himself available for calls and interviews. In the aftermath of Sundowns' tenth ABSA Premiership title win, a triumph that completed a fabled 'La Decima', Kekana was effusive when praising his teammates. Those men fought alongside him to snatch the title on the very final day. Kekana was truly a team-oriented man. Best Orlando Pirates XI after Riveiro leaves?

Orlando Pirates will undoubtedly add new faces in the transfer window after the season ended in somewhat underwhelming fashion. Chaine; Van Rooyen, Xoki, Mbokazi, Hotto; Mbatha, Nemtajela ; Nkota, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng; Mabasa. It's unlikely that wholesale changes will be made to a settled, predominantly young squad. However, there are a couple of key areas needing improvement. 24-year-old Marumo Gallants midfield general Masindi Nemtajela is seen as a natural successor to the impressive but ageing Makhehlene Makhaula. Could Pirates also do with a new left-back? The evergreen Deon Hotto is 34. Wearing the number 47 jersey, Simphiwe Selepe has made his full Betway premiership debut for the Buccaneers. His debut for the club came not long ago, as a substitute against Kaizer Chiefs earlier this month. DDC youngster Cemran Dansin, still just 17, was also named in the matchday squad, which beat Golden Arrows 3-0. The goals came courtesy of Tshegofatso Mabasa, Bandsile Shandu and Kabelo Dlamini.
