Pirates' Chaine, Makhaula prizes at PSL awards trigger controversy
The biggest controversy and debate on social media — mostly aligned along club lines — was around the Midfielder and Goalkeeper of the Season winners.
Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates claimed the best keeper gong ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns' Ronwen Williams and Magesi FC's Elvis Chipezeze. Many felt Chaine should not have won ahead of Chipezeze, who was outstanding for Magesi and kept the most clean sheets last season.
Chaine featured in 25 Premiership matches for the Buccaneers last season. He kept 11 clean sheets and conceded 18 goals, while Williams who played just 16 league games for Masandawana, also kept 11 clean sheets and conceded just six goals.

Despite being level on the same number of clean sheets as Chaine, it seems the number of games Williams played was a disadvantage for him. Chipezeze, however, featured 26 times in the league but conceded 28 goals and kept 10 clean sheets.
A major factor should also be that Chipezeze's team Magesi has limited financial resources.
Pirates' Makhehlene Makhaula won Midfielder of the Season ahead of Marcelo Allende and Teboho Mokoena of Sundowns. This has also sparked heated debate and the stats seem to back up the argument that Allende should have emerged victorious.

Makhaula, 35, had an outstanding campaign, featuring in 22 league matches. But Allende was one of the standout players for eight-time successive league winners Sundowns, playing 24 matches and providing four assists. Mokoena played 23 league matches and scored two goals while providing three assists.
The conveners for both the Midfielder and the Goalkeeper of the Season awards could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, who was crowned Coach of the Season, was pleased with the recognition he received.
'I feel privileged to have received the award. It's a reflection of the work of many people who are behind the scenes and who support the work of the coach,' he said.
'I dedicate this award to my players. They are the face and allow us coaches to be successful.
'To the management of the club that believed in me and to our fans, it is an award that reflects good work and many fantastic moments we had together.'

Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns swiftly put their stuttering start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season behind them to secure maximum points in their second match of the campaign, easing to a 2-0 victory over AmaZulu on Tuesday night. The Brazilians had many already questioning their prospects of a ninth successive championship when they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Chippa United on Matchday one. But Miguel Cardoso's men restored business as usual at Loftus Versfeld with a win that was never truly in doubt. Granted, they only broke the deadlock after the interval, having failed to breach the Usuthu defence in the opening 45 minutes. It was not for a lack of endeavour, as Sundowns created chances aplenty and could have rendered the contest academic by half-time. Kutloano Letlhaku, Arthur Sales, Marcelo Allende and Themba Zwane all came close to beating Olwethu Johnson following incisive attacking moves. The second half brought a decisive change, particularly with the introduction of Tashreeq Matthews, whose energy and creativity transformed the Brazilians' attacking play. He would end the evening with both an assist and a goal. Sundowns opened the scoring with a superb Iqraam Rayners volley, the striker finishing off a flowing team move initiated by Allende. Sales delivered a delicate cross from the right, which Matthews headed back across the box for Rayners to smash home. Johnson knew from the roar behind him that he had been well beaten. As the final whistle approached, Matthews added his name to the scoresheet. Sales played the ball into the area, and Matthews brought it under control with finesse before turning away from his marker and firing in off the base of the upright. It was a result and performance to silence those who thought Sundowns might be vulnerable, reaffirming their dominance in both possession and build-up play while repeatedly prising open AmaZulu's defence. With their supposed main title rivals, Orlando Pirates, slipping to a second consecutive defeat, the question now is who can stop Sundowns from securing a ninth league crown in succession. Tuesday's outcome will only add intrigue to the MTN8 semi-final first leg between the two sides at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. 'Bring back Jose Riveiro!' – Pirates faithful lose patience with Ouaddou
Orlando Pirates supporters are calling on the club's management to recall Jose Riveiro after the team suffered back-to-back league defeats. Under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers have lost their opening two Betway Premiership matches. This past weekend, Pirates went down 1-0 to Sekhukhune United. On Tuesday evening, many expected the Sea Robbers to bounce back against Marumo Gallants but were humiliated 2-1 despite scoring first. The defeat leaves Ouaddou's men right at the bottom after two matches. Orlando Pirates fans are calling for Riveiro Jose Riveiro coached Pirates from 2022 until 2025 where he went on to win five trophies with the Soweto giants.
