Mother, 52, is left with agonising second-degree burns after tealight exploded in her face

A mother-of-two was left with agonising second-degree burns after a tealight exploded in her face. Marnie Hobbs took her Home Bargains tealight outside when it began 'crackling' after burning for nearly two hours. The 52-year-old from Chandler's Ford, near Southampton, Hants, watched as the flame grew bigger and as she went to blow it out, boiling wax splattered over her face and chest. She said what happened in the aftermath remains 'hazy' until she woke up at the emergency department at Winchester hospital. Now, more than seven weeks on, Ms Hobbs is calling for Home Bargains to take accountability. 'I bought a pack of 25 tealights costing around £2.50, from the store in Eastleigh in March before I decided to use one on April 2', she said. Recounting the incident, she said: 'The hot wax covered me from the tip of my nose, down my face and over my chest. 'After arriving at A&E I was showered in cold water for 20 minutes before a consultant dressed my burns. 'I returned the following day so they could remove the blisters. 'I've had two children, and I have never felt pain like this removal, it was the worst pain I have felt.' She emailed customer services at Home Bargains about the incident on April 4 and requested an investigation into the safety of the tealights. Six days later Ms Hobbs was told Home Bargains were 'unable to provide further assistance'. 'The product in question is one of our highest volume sellers, selling 10s of thousands across the week over many years and this is the first complaint of this kind that our safety and compliance team has encountered,' she was told. The 'dismissiveness' of their response upset Ms Hobbs, and she is fearful this could happen to more people. She said: 'I would be mortified if this happens to somebody else, God forbid it happens to a child. 'I am so glad I took the candle outside, and I can't bear to think about the damage it could have done to our home. 'You trust that the products from Home Bargains are safe to use. 'It has been so traumatic and painful.' In response, a spokesperson from Home Bargains said customer safety is a 'top priority' and a 'thorough investigation' was carried out. 'We are satisfied that the product meets the safety standards', they said, adding: 'We understand how distressing this experience must have been, and our thoughts are with the customer. We wish them a full and speedy recovery.'

Watch: Electric car sets house on fire

This is the moment an electric car sets a house on fire after bursting into flames. CCTV footage captured the raging fire in the early hours of Friday morning in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire. A family home was left charred after the explosion at 5am, which also damaged a van parked next to the electric car. Neighbours said the young family who lived at the address were not hurt. It is thought that an electric car sitting on the drive suddenly ignited while it was being charged overnight. 'I was frightened' One neighbour said: 'The fire was going when I got up, and the house was beginning to catch. 'Flames were coming out the door and window. I was frightened for the young family.' Photographs from the scene showed the burned wreckage of three vehicles outside the house, which had been left with shattered windows and charred walls. A dormer window on the roof was reduced to its timber frame and roof tiles were missing. Hampshire Fire and Rescue sent firemen from three different fire stations to the early morning blaze. A spokesman for the fire service said: 'Firefighters tackled a fire involving a number of vehicles which spread to a house on Charlecote Drive in Chandler's Ford this morning. 'Crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and St Mary's were alerted shortly before 5am when multiple 999 calls were made into the control room reporting the blaze. 'Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reels and jets. Fortunately, there were no casualties involved. 'The electricity, gas and water supply to the building was isolated before the incident was handed over to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers.' The fire service said the incident was under control by 7.34am. Policemen from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary closed the street while the fire service worked to extinguish the blaze. Lithium batteries used in electric cars can burn without external oxygen. Fire service chiefs have said previously that electric vehicle fires can take longer to deal with than petrol or diesel cars.

Horrifying moment electric car suddenly bursts into flames on driveway - starting raging blaze that spread to van and £550,000 family home

The horrifying moment an electric car suddenly burst into flames on a driveway has been captured on CCTV, as the vehicle sparked a raging blaze which spread to a van and a family home. The shocking images show a fireball tearing through vehicles outside the £550,000 house in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire, in the early hours of this morning. The car was parked on the driveway and was charging overnight when it caught fire at around 5am. Photographs taken after the blaze reveal the shocking extent of the damage, including the wreckage of three vehicles - one of which is a van. The front of the house was also badly burned. Aside from the van, all the vehicles on the drive have been reduced to charred remains - but it is unclear what type of vehicles they are. The home on a quiet road belongs to a young family, according to neighbours. Thankfully, the family were able to get out safely and no casualties have been reported. One neighbour said: 'I was probably the last to hear about it on the block. The fire was going when I got up, and the house was beginning to catch. The car was parked on the driveway and was charging overnight when it caught fire at around 5am 'Flames were coming out the door and window. I was frightened for the young family.' A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said crews from three different fire stations attended the scene. 'Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reels and jets. 'Fortunately, there were no casualties involved. 'The electricity, gas and water supply to the building was isolated before the incident was handed over to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers.' It's not the first time an electric vehicle has caught fire in the middle of the night. In January a Worcester mother told how her vehicle burst into flames on the family's driveway while she and her children were asleep. She said: 'I was asleep, all the kids were asleep and I just heard a massive bang. 'At first I thought the television had fallen off the wall but when I looked outside I saw the reflection of the flames in our neighbour's windows. 'I was in shock. 'I'm traumatised, the kids are traumatised. I grabbed my three children and the dog and rushed out of the house as quickly as I could. 'It was an electric Peugeot with a 24 reg that I bought in May, the fire was that bad that you can't even tell anymore. 'It now looks like an old racing car that has been abandoned.'
