Aldi 'launch' rival to M&S's strawberry sandwich and fans are loving it
Aldi has never been one to shy away from poking fun at its competitors. When Marks and Spencer reckon they're ahead of the game, Aldi is always ready with a clever marketing trick up their sleeve. It's been a tricky few months for M&S after a cyber attack forced the retailer to axe all online orders. The fallout led to M&S making a loss on this year's profits by around £300million. The high street favourite also faces legal action from Scottish customers after it was confirmed the data breach saw personal information stolen. Things seem to be improving for M&S, with a partial return to online sales last month and Chief Exec Stuart Machin said to have reported to shareholders that all online orders and shopping operations should be back up and running in August. But despite all the good press around the buzzworthy strawberry sandwich, M&S has again become the butt of the joke after Aldi - once again - re-launched their supermarket feud, reports the Mirror. The budget retailer is known for its witty social media banter, especially at the expense of M&S, and took another cheeky yet amusing dig at their rival. Following the Colin Vs Cuthbert caterpillar cake debacle, Aldi has now taken aim at the strawberry and cream sandwich. True to form, Aldi responded to M&S's new creation by 'launching' their own spoof sando, mocking their rival's posh version. The German supermarket's version features carrots and cream on a soft sweetened loaf. They shared their new concoction on social media, parodying the iconic M&S slogan - just to twist the knife a bit further. They wrote: "This is not just any sando... this is a Carrot and Creme Sando. 500K likes and we'll make it happen." Although it's not a legitimate item yet, Aldi may have to stock it if they reach their 500,000-like target. M&S had popularised the slang term 'sando' when they introduced their Chicken Katsu Sando last year, and Aldi's engagement in the viral sensation has won over shoppers with their playful jab at their rival. One fan remarked on the post: "Can always count on Aldi to have a sense of humour," prompting Aldi to respond: "Love a good bit of tomfoolery." Another keen Aldi enthusiast added: "I've been waiting for Aldi's response on this," while a third quipped: "Guaranteed to make you see in the dark!" Aldi humorously guaranteed: "100% night vision or your money back." A fourth joked: "Easy now, wouldn't want any beef in that sandwich," prompting a cheeky retort from Aldi: "Oh, we've always got beef!". This follows Aldi's playful name change at one of their Manchester stores in anticipation of the Oasis reunion concert. The supermarket paid homage by altering the name of its Bury New Road store in Prestwich to 'Aldeh'. The brand explained that the temporary rebranding is a nod to the Mancunian way of pronouncing its name and serves as a tribute to the Gallagher brothers and the city's rich musical legacy. Aldi has announced that the sign will be proudly displayed during Oasis ' eagerly anticipated return to Manchester. It has been hinted that fans have already lined up outside the store to snap pictures with the new sign in honour of the band. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Aldi's brutal M&S takedown as it 'launches' strawberry sandwich equivalent
M&S's viral strawberry sandwich has had a second spin in the spotlight thanks to budget supermarket Aldi, which has mock-launched a random alternative When M&S think they are one step ahead - Aldi always has a secret marketing ploy up their sleeves. In the latest supermarket wars, Aldi has taken a brutal, but humorous, swipe at M&S for the viral strawberry sandwich in the best way possible. Aldi is known for it's tongue-in-cheek social media jibes, particularly directed at Marks and Spencer's after the Colin and Cuthbert caterpillar cake wars. Now they have jumped on the sandwich bandwagon after M&S made headlines when it announced an unusual strawberry sandwich - sending social media into a frenzy. Shoppers were divided over the unusual fruit filling, complete with cream, wedged between two slices of thick sweetened bread. So Aldi did what Aldi does best and mocked up their own 'viral' sandwich, and it's a dupe of M&S's luxury offering. The Aldi version is made up of carrots and creme on a soft sweetened bread. To add a further punch to M&S, Aldi's caption was mocking the famous M&S strapline, as the Facebook post said: "This is not just any sando... this is a Carrot and Creme Sando. 500K likes and we'll make it happen." M&S are known for calling their sandwiches 'sando's' when they launched their Chicken Katsu Sando last year, and by joining in on the viral trend, shoppers have loved Aldi's ploy at taking a swipe at M&S. One fan commented on the post: "Can always count on Aldi to have a sense of humour," to which Aldi replied: "Love a good bit of tomfoolery." While another eager Aldi fan chimed: "I've been waiting for aldi response on this," and a third penned: "Guaranteed to make you see in the dark!" As Aldi replied: "100% night vision or your money back." Meanwhile a fourth said: "Easy now, wouldn't want any beef in that sandwich," to which Aldi boldly responded: "Oh, we've always got beef!" It comes after Aldi changed it's name at one of their Manchester stores ahead of the Oasis reunion gig. It has paid tribute by having changed the name of its Bury New Road store in Prestwich. The store, which is just a few miles from Heaton Park, has been renamed 'Aldeh'. The retailer has said that the temporary rebrand embraces the Mancunian pronunciation of its name. It described the decision to rename the store as being in homage to the Gallagher brothers and Manchester's musical heritage. Aldi has revealed that the sign will be on display at the store throughout Oasis' much-awaited comeback stint in the city. It's teased that fans of the band have already queued outside the store to take photos of the new tribute.

I tried M&S's new strawberry sandwich and couldn't finish it for one reason
It's the season for strawberries and cream - but would you ever eat them in a sandwich? Upmarket retailer M&S have launched a limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich and it's definitely causing a stir. With Wimbledon just around the corner, everyone is stocking up on the traditional strawbs and cream, however Marks and Spencers decided to take it up a level with this brand new sandwich. The concept is very M&S, however could this be a new sandwich filling that's able to compete with a beloved ham and cheese or ploughmans sarnie? The limited-edition sandwich goes for £2.80 in stores, and it has been influenced by Japanese cusine, with strawberry sandwiches aka a 'Fruit Sando' found in pretty much every Japanese convienience store they're nothing new. So, with this in mind, I decided to head to my local M&S and give it a go - and it is summer after all. What was once a modest shop where you'd buy your tights and socks, or your uncle a nice bottle of wine, is now going through what looks like a huge experimental process, and all 'traditional' ideas have swiftly gone out of the window. M&S sandwiches have come a long way over the years, they seem to have really stepped outside the box when it comes to their fillings. While you may associate the posh supermarket with cucumber and cream cheese, or salmon and dill stuffed buns, they have gone beyond traditional fillings. Forget your prawn mayo and think more Chicken Katsu Sando or NY style Salt Beef. These aren't just sandwiches, they're M&S sandwiches. Now their dessert style sandwich has been added to the mix - but how did it taste? I was intrigued by this one, as it sounds like it would be way too sweet for me. The Red Diamond strawberries, sitting ontop of a seriously thick layer of sweetened full fat soft cheese and creme fraiche packed between two slices of brioche style bread. This screamed sickly to me and I didn't know what to expect. You are only given one slice of the sandwich, rather than two which already makes it a very expensive 'snack'. For £2.80 I'd have thought you'd get both halves of the sandwich, but as soon as I tried it I knew exactly why - it was a lot. The first hit of strawberry was strong and over-powering, but the creaminess of the cream worked well. I was pleasantly surprised at how mild the sweetness was of the cream and bread. I was expecting it to taste like I was eating a Victoria Sponge cake or a sweet scone, but I was wrong and it was a lot more mild than I thought. The brioche style bread - with crusts included - worked well as it was midly sweet, but not too much. However it was a lot to eat in one sitting, and the thick layer of cream made it tricky to finish. When I didn't get a slice of the strawberry in a bite, I found myself having a mouthful of just bread and cream which was an unusual experience. Overall, I think this is a pretty good sweet treat, but I think cut up into smaller sandwich fingers would be much better - and easier to eat. I think it does work well, and much better than I thought, and to truly top it off, all I need now is a chilled glass of champagne to fully accommodate. I can't say it's replaced a savoury sandwich I'd grab on my lunch break, but it was a very good concept, and fitting for the time of year. It's so wrong it's almost so right? Hats off to you, M&S.
