I tried M&S's new strawberry sandwich and couldn't finish it for one reason
With Wimbledon just around the corner, everyone is stocking up on the traditional strawbs and cream, however Marks and Spencers decided to take it up a level with this brand new sandwich. The concept is very M&S, however could this be a new sandwich filling that's able to compete with a beloved ham and cheese or ploughmans sarnie?
The limited-edition sandwich goes for £2.80 in stores, and it has been influenced by Japanese cusine, with strawberry sandwiches aka a 'Fruit Sando' found in pretty much every Japanese convienience store they're nothing new. So, with this in mind, I decided to head to my local M&S and give it a go - and it is summer after all.
What was once a modest shop where you'd buy your tights and socks, or your uncle a nice bottle of wine, is now going through what looks like a huge experimental process, and all 'traditional' ideas have swiftly gone out of the window.
M&S sandwiches have come a long way over the years, they seem to have really stepped outside the box when it comes to their fillings. While you may associate the posh supermarket with cucumber and cream cheese, or salmon and dill stuffed buns, they have gone beyond traditional fillings.
Forget your prawn mayo and think more Chicken Katsu Sando or NY style Salt Beef. These aren't just sandwiches, they're M&S sandwiches. Now their dessert style sandwich has been added to the mix - but how did it taste?
I was intrigued by this one, as it sounds like it would be way too sweet for me. The Red Diamond strawberries, sitting ontop of a seriously thick layer of sweetened full fat soft cheese and creme fraiche packed between two slices of brioche style bread. This screamed sickly to me and I didn't know what to expect.
You are only given one slice of the sandwich, rather than two which already makes it a very expensive 'snack'. For £2.80 I'd have thought you'd get both halves of the sandwich, but as soon as I tried it I knew exactly why - it was a lot. The first hit of strawberry was strong and over-powering, but the creaminess of the cream worked well. I was pleasantly surprised at how mild the sweetness was of the cream and bread.
I was expecting it to taste like I was eating a Victoria Sponge cake or a sweet scone, but I was wrong and it was a lot more mild than I thought. The brioche style bread - with crusts included - worked well as it was midly sweet, but not too much. However it was a lot to eat in one sitting, and the thick layer of cream made it tricky to finish.
When I didn't get a slice of the strawberry in a bite, I found myself having a mouthful of just bread and cream which was an unusual experience.
Overall, I think this is a pretty good sweet treat, but I think cut up into smaller sandwich fingers would be much better - and easier to eat. I think it does work well, and much better than I thought, and to truly top it off, all I need now is a chilled glass of champagne to fully accommodate.
I can't say it's replaced a savoury sandwich I'd grab on my lunch break, but it was a very good concept, and fitting for the time of year. It's so wrong it's almost so right? Hats off to you, M&S.

Frankie Bridge secures major TV job after ongoing ITV Loose Women feud
Frankie Bridge has landed a brand new role with ITV as she takes on the role of a judge of an upcoming series, following her reported rift with her Loose Women co-stars Former Saturdays singer Frankie Bridge has landed a new ITV role following a reported feud with her co-star Myleene Klass. Frankie, 36, has been involved in a rumoured feud with Myleene and also her former bandmate Rochelle Humes in recent weeks, and ITV reportedly had to step in to ensure the panellists didn't cross paths. Frankie has now bagged a new role on ITV and will be appearing as a judge on the upcoming series of ITV's M&S: Dress The Nation. The singer is known for her style and has regularly shared her fashion outfits and tips online in recent years. Her sense of style has been noted since she first stepped into the spotlight with The Saturdays, and when she had her iconic pixie haircut. The show was announced earlier this year with presenters Vernon Kay and AJ Odudu back on our screens. It comes after David Beckham speaks 'as a father' in 'family' announcement after latest Brooklyn snub. A source revealed to the Daily Star: "Producers think Frankie is perfect for the show because she's so fashionable." The Mirror has contacted Frankie's representatives for comment. Despite the reported rift between Frankie and the ladies, they appeared to shut down the rumours as Rochelle and Frankie have both been interacting with one another on Instagram and showing their support for one another. After Frankie shared a glimpse into her holiday, Rochelle liked the post, and vice versa, after Rochelle went on holiday. However, neither of the ladies has interacted online with Myleene and doesn't even follow her online. The three Loose Women stars were once thought to be good friends, as Myleene and Frankie attended Rochelle's hen do back in 2012, however, Rochelle and Frankie have remained friends with Myleene's ex-husband Graham Quinn. A source previously said: 'Myleene seemed to take that as Frankie taking sides with Graham because of their working relationship." It comes as Frankie took to social media to share a cryptic message amid speculation of the rift between herself and Myleene. Frankie posted on TikTok as she enjoyed her latest getaway, and in the clip, she is filmed at a beach resort miming along to Manchild by Sabrina Carpenter. The video was captioned: "Taking 36 years to realise being a people pleaser doesn't please anyone." She went on: "Fad diets are a waste of time. Turns out it's all about balance?! Who knew?! Only you can make yourself happy." And Frankie added: "You can do the hard thing! You've got this." She then added a red love heart emoji to her post. Fans were quick to agree with her comments, letting their feelings be known on the post.

It will no doubt raise the eyebrow of Rochelle, who is a long-standing brand ambassador for Marks & Spencer, which has an active partnership in the programme. Despite rumours of a rift between the ladies, they dropped huge clues recently that all was well between them. Rochelle and Frankie have both been interacting with one another on Instagram by liking a slew of each other's snaps. Inside abandoned British primary school where terrifying ghost 'jumps out' at explorers
Ben, an urban explorer and content creator, was left feeling 'really weird' after taking multiple photographs of the abandoned school, before noticing a figure in the hallway An urban explorer stumbled upon an eerie sight in an abandoned school, with homework still pinned on the walls, bags left on desks - and a ghostly figure lurking in the hallway. Ben, a 30 year old content creator from Cambridge, decided to explore the derelict building during some downtime on a work trip. What he discovered sent shivers down his spine. "I was definitely alone in the building, it's a very rural area and I called out and checked rooms before I started taking pictures," he revealed to Whats the Jam. It comes after a dead body is found in 'underground ancient cave' in popular UK beauty spot. "The place is quite creepy because it is completely untouched. There are still the school bags on desks, homework on the walls, awards on the walls, even the plants which are dead in biology. It sits on its own on the outskirts of town with everything frozen in time. "But it was only after looking back at my photos I noticed a figure in the hallway. It was like a black and white figure and looked like a spirit. I just felt really weird after seeing it. "I haven't experienced much with the supernatural or spirits. But I know the Japanese believe spirits stay where they belong." The school was abandoned following the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan in 2011, which claimed over 18,000 lives, including several thousands victims who were never recovered. In one chilling image, a figure can be seen peering up at Ben from the end of a hallway. The explorer described the scene as "very, very eerie", adding: "There was nobody else there and there is no way I'd take a shot of a hallway if someone was coming up it - I'd be freaked out. " Just last month, Ben stumbled upon an abandoned jail that reminded him of scenes from the post-apocalyptic horror drama The Walking Dead, given that much of series three and four were filmed inside a prison. He spent hours exploring cell blocks, a visitation hall, gymnasium and cafeteria. Situated in Florida, US, the building was originally a youth detention centre for 18 to 21 year olds. He revealed: "I went alone. "It was about 42°C in there, which was disgusting. I explored every single building. "The whole place was very eerie because it was so big. It was like something out of an apocalyptic movie. "But getting to do this alone felt very special. My favourite thing about the prison was that it had so many different buildings and units. "
