I tried M&S's new strawberry sandwich and couldn't finish it for one reason

Daily Mirror13 hours ago

It's the season for strawberries and cream - but would you ever eat them in a sandwich? Upmarket retailer M&S have launched a limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich and it's definitely causing a stir.
With Wimbledon just around the corner, everyone is stocking up on the traditional strawbs and cream, however Marks and Spencers decided to take it up a level with this brand new sandwich. The concept is very M&S, however could this be a new sandwich filling that's able to compete with a beloved ham and cheese or ploughmans sarnie?
The limited-edition sandwich goes for £2.80 in stores, and it has been influenced by Japanese cusine, with strawberry sandwiches aka a 'Fruit Sando' found in pretty much every Japanese convienience store they're nothing new. So, with this in mind, I decided to head to my local M&S and give it a go - and it is summer after all.
What was once a modest shop where you'd buy your tights and socks, or your uncle a nice bottle of wine, is now going through what looks like a huge experimental process, and all 'traditional' ideas have swiftly gone out of the window.
M&S sandwiches have come a long way over the years, they seem to have really stepped outside the box when it comes to their fillings. While you may associate the posh supermarket with cucumber and cream cheese, or salmon and dill stuffed buns, they have gone beyond traditional fillings.
Forget your prawn mayo and think more Chicken Katsu Sando or NY style Salt Beef. These aren't just sandwiches, they're M&S sandwiches. Now their dessert style sandwich has been added to the mix - but how did it taste?
I was intrigued by this one, as it sounds like it would be way too sweet for me. The Red Diamond strawberries, sitting ontop of a seriously thick layer of sweetened full fat soft cheese and creme fraiche packed between two slices of brioche style bread. This screamed sickly to me and I didn't know what to expect.
You are only given one slice of the sandwich, rather than two which already makes it a very expensive 'snack'. For £2.80 I'd have thought you'd get both halves of the sandwich, but as soon as I tried it I knew exactly why - it was a lot. The first hit of strawberry was strong and over-powering, but the creaminess of the cream worked well. I was pleasantly surprised at how mild the sweetness was of the cream and bread.
I was expecting it to taste like I was eating a Victoria Sponge cake or a sweet scone, but I was wrong and it was a lot more mild than I thought. The brioche style bread - with crusts included - worked well as it was midly sweet, but not too much. However it was a lot to eat in one sitting, and the thick layer of cream made it tricky to finish.
When I didn't get a slice of the strawberry in a bite, I found myself having a mouthful of just bread and cream which was an unusual experience.
Overall, I think this is a pretty good sweet treat, but I think cut up into smaller sandwich fingers would be much better - and easier to eat. I think it does work well, and much better than I thought, and to truly top it off, all I need now is a chilled glass of champagne to fully accommodate.
I can't say it's replaced a savoury sandwich I'd grab on my lunch break, but it was a very good concept, and fitting for the time of year. It's so wrong it's almost so right? Hats off to you, M&S.

All 28 of L.A.'s Michelin star restaurants, updated for 2025

Let's be real: Could a French tire company really encapsulate what good dining in Los Angeles entails? Apparently, they're still going to try. The largely Eurocentric international guide has released its 2025 guide for California, and thus the City of Angels. In 2025, Michelin maintained almost every one-star and two-star designation in L.A. County from the year before, but upgraded Providence's two stars to three stars—the guide's highest honor. The new one-star eateries this year are Restaurant Ki and Mori Nozomi. As is usually the case with Michelin, all new starred places this year fell into the Japanese or 'tasting menu' category, with prices in the four dollar sign range. The 125-year-old Big Red Book proves that while age is just a number, culinary elitism is timeless. For those blissfully unaware of what the Michelin Guide is, here's how it all goes down: The star ratings, while not universally celebrated, are considered the most prestigious award any restaurant could ever receive. One star denotes 'a very good restaurant,' two signifies 'excellent cooking that is worth a detour' and three stars, most coveted of all, translates to 'exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.' A newer Bib Gourmand category, added to their 2019 guide to California, also recognizes more affordable spots, with three new L.A. area additions in 2025: Komal, Rasarumah and Vin Folk. To determine these ratings, the guide's anonymous inspectors visit and judge restaurants according to quality, atmosphere, service and even nominal details, such as how far apart the tables are spaced. With a clear bias towards fine dining and blatant roots in a culture of Western imperialism, the Michelin Guide is just one measure of excellence in food and hospitality among many—particularly in a city as rich in amazing street food and multicultural cuisine such as L.A. However, if you still have (French multinational tire brand) stars in your eyes, look no further: We've updated our list of the city's Michelin-starred restaurants for 2025. Of note: For the first time in history, L.A. has now a pair of three-star spots, the highest award the guide confers.

'I bought £30 M&S cake for a fraction of the price at incredible shop'

If you want an M&S sweet treat but don't want to fork out full price, you might want to consider visiting this outlet store where you can purchase slightly damaged goods for less A shopper who visited the Marks & Spencer factory outlet was blown away by the deals she managed to get there – and one cake in particular astounded her. M&S is known for having some of the best baked goods around, from Colin the Caterpillar to tubs of flapjacks and chocolatey treats. Their cakes, in particular, are immensely popular and come in an array of flavours and colours. However, many of their larger offerings don't come cheap. Travel content creator Nicole is on hand to help, having found a place where you can buy your favourite M&S goodies for much less than in store. ‌ 'Oh my God, right, I have found the factory where they make all the M&S fresh food and they have a factory shop,' she said in a now-viral TikTok video. ‌ The foodie couldn't contain her excitement as she showed viewers the M&S bargains she snagged from the shop. First she picked up a big bag full of mini chocolate caterpillars for £2.50. She also got a pack of flapjack bites for £2.50 and she remarked that the pack was 'so heavy.' Nicole then bought a large bag of strawberry and cream mini bites, again for £2.50. She explained that the treats are so affordable because they 'have all been slightly damaged,' so they get sold in the factory shop instead of M&S stores across the country. She then said she found a whole lemon and sponge roll she picked up for just 50p and a sticky toffee pudding for £1.50. Nicole ended by revealing the biggest bargain of them all: an M&S Naked Vanilla cake for £7. In store, these cakes can set shoppers back around £30. The price of the cake was so good, she ended up buying two of them. The factory shop is called Park Cakes Company Shop and it is located in Oldham, near Manchester. ‌ Inside the hidden store, she spotted a Doug the Dog cake for £2.50 that she thought was 'an absolute bargain' and full layer cakes for £10. The thrifty shopper explained that there are different items on offer each day. She shared: 'We went in for my daughter's party and managed to get everything for like under £10.' Nicole even found a large chocolate caterpillar treat for £1. The Park Cakes Company Shop is open to the public every day from Monday to Saturday but 17-year-olds are not allowed to go in. The content creator's TikTok clip has amassed 1.2 million views, 66,900 likes and more than 600 comments, at the time of writing. One user said: 'Literally down the road from me! Love a cheeky Park Cakes trip.' Another commented: 'What?! I've just stumbled across this and Googled it, it's 29 minutes away from me! Omg I'm going thank you lol.' A third pleaded: 'No don't put Park Cakes on the map.' A fourth echoed: 'Please stop putting people onto Park Cakes! It's my fave place.'
