Tesco shoppers divided over 'sweet sandwich' in meal deal dubbed 'abomination'
The sandwich left one shopper feeling like she was "doing a Bushtucker Trial" We all love a sweet treat and a sugary pick-me-up in the afternoon, but one major supermarket has left shoppers totally divided over its newest addition to the popular meal deal selection - with one calling it an "abomination". Tesco has unveiled the Birthday Cake Sandwich, which some have called "delicious," while others have questioned who on earth is responsible for dreaming it up. In any case, it is certainly perfect for marking a special occasion. At £3, the sandwich consists of "sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam", as stated on its own packaging. It can be combined with a snack and beverage as part of the current meal deal offer. "Get it while you can," the wrapper states. "Enjoy the sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam. An all-time favourite treat in an all-time favourite deal." Bella Hill, a content creator, shared news of the product after discovering it at her local Tesco branch on Monday, August 4. Bella uploaded a TikTok featuring the dessert-inspired sandwich, with her initial reaction being that the concoction looked like "colourful coleslaw". Before eating it, she revealed she "felt like she was doing a Bushtucker Trial". She dramatically told her followers: "I would rather eat a bug than eat that." After taking a bite, Bella let the flavours sink in before revealing: "The after-taste is like Victoria Sponge Cake. If you like icing and strawberry jam, you're going to absolutely love that. The bread is delicious." Bella rated her experience a 6/10, and the comments poured in within an hour. Shoppers were swift to draw comparisons between this fresh Tesco offering containing 31g of sugar and the internet sensation that was M&S's strawberries and cream-filled sandwich. The Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich was priced at £2.80, launched around Wimbledon time in June 2025, and dominated social media. But M&S soon became the butt of the joke after Aldi - once again - re-launched their supermarket feud. The budget retailer is known for its witty social media banter, especially at the expense of M&S, and following the Colin Vs Cuthbert caterpillar cake debacle, Aldi took aim at the strawberry and cream sandwich. Aldi responded to M&S's new creation by 'launching' their own spoof sando, mocking their rival's posh version. The German supermarket's version features carrots and cream on a soft sweetened loaf. However, not everyone was impressed with Tesco's attempt, with one person on another platform complaining: "This is getting ridiculous now!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Another chimed in: "What are they going to come up with next? I can't think of anything worse!" Another critic expressed their dismay, writing: "Jeez they will put anything between a couple of slices of bread these days! Just because you can doesn't mean you should!" Tesco offers its meal deal for £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without. Tesco states that this price is for the standard meal deal, which includes a choice of a sandwich (now featuring cake), wrap, pasta, or salad, plus a snack and a drink. The Birthday Cake Sandwich is being promoted as a limited edition item, meaning it won't be on the shelves indefinitely. Those curious to sample it should check out the supermarket's grab-and-go section.

Tesco shoppers divided over new £3 'sweet sandwich' in meal deal
Some felt like the supermarket had been inspired by M&S to come up with the creation that is quickly going viral online Tesco has shoppers split over the latest item added to the famous meal deal combo - with some branding it as "delicious" and others are wondering who to blame for its creation. Some might find the sandwich a little too sweet compared to other flavours on the menu - but it's certainly fit for a celebration. A supermarket shopper posted about the item when spotting it in their local Tesco store on Monday, August 4. Sasha Beeney posted a picture to the Extreme Bargains and Couponing UK Facebook page about the dessert-style sandwich, and within an hour, it was flooded with comments. Costing £3 on its own, the Birthday Cake Sandwich is made up of "sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam", according to the packaging itself. It can be bundled with a snack and drink as part of the existing meal deal. The packaging reads: "Get it while you can. Enjoy the sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam. An all-time favourite treat in an all-time favourite deal." One said: "This one looks really yummy!" Another joked: "When it's your birthday but you have to go to work!" People were quick to compare this new Tesco treat with 31g of sugar to the viral M&S sandwich filled with strawberries and cream. The Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich cost £2.80, was released around the same time as Wimbledon in June 2025 and took over the internet. A third Tesco shopper wrote: "At least there are two sandwiches in this one!" Someone else put: "What in the M&S [alternative] is this! Deffo need to try it though!" A fifth said: "Looks delicious!" And, one more shopper shared what others can expect: "Had this and it actually surprises you. It's quite nice - more like a jam sandwich but the cream cheese gives a nice sweet after taste." Not everyone was convinced though, as someone commented: "This is getting ridiculous now!" and another added: "What are they going to come up with next? I can't think of anything worse!" A third critic commented: "Jeez they will put anything between a couple of slices of bread these days! Just because you can doesn't mean you should!" A Tesco meal deal costs £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without a Clubcard. According to Tesco, this price applies to the standard meal deal, which includes a sandwich (now including cake), wrap, pasta, or salad alongside a snack and a drink. The new Birthday Cake Sandwich is marketed as being limited edition - so it won't be around forever. Shoppers who are interested in trying on for themselves should see if any are available in the supermarket's to-go section.

I tried M&S's new strawberry sandwich and couldn't finish it for one reason
It's the season for strawberries and cream - but would you ever eat them in a sandwich? Upmarket retailer M&S have launched a limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich and it's definitely causing a stir. With Wimbledon just around the corner, everyone is stocking up on the traditional strawbs and cream, however Marks and Spencers decided to take it up a level with this brand new sandwich. The concept is very M&S, however could this be a new sandwich filling that's able to compete with a beloved ham and cheese or ploughmans sarnie? The limited-edition sandwich goes for £2.80 in stores, and it has been influenced by Japanese cusine, with strawberry sandwiches aka a 'Fruit Sando' found in pretty much every Japanese convienience store they're nothing new. So, with this in mind, I decided to head to my local M&S and give it a go - and it is summer after all. What was once a modest shop where you'd buy your tights and socks, or your uncle a nice bottle of wine, is now going through what looks like a huge experimental process, and all 'traditional' ideas have swiftly gone out of the window. M&S sandwiches have come a long way over the years, they seem to have really stepped outside the box when it comes to their fillings. While you may associate the posh supermarket with cucumber and cream cheese, or salmon and dill stuffed buns, they have gone beyond traditional fillings. Forget your prawn mayo and think more Chicken Katsu Sando or NY style Salt Beef. These aren't just sandwiches, they're M&S sandwiches. Now their dessert style sandwich has been added to the mix - but how did it taste? I was intrigued by this one, as it sounds like it would be way too sweet for me. The Red Diamond strawberries, sitting ontop of a seriously thick layer of sweetened full fat soft cheese and creme fraiche packed between two slices of brioche style bread. This screamed sickly to me and I didn't know what to expect. You are only given one slice of the sandwich, rather than two which already makes it a very expensive 'snack'. For £2.80 I'd have thought you'd get both halves of the sandwich, but as soon as I tried it I knew exactly why - it was a lot. The first hit of strawberry was strong and over-powering, but the creaminess of the cream worked well. I was pleasantly surprised at how mild the sweetness was of the cream and bread. I was expecting it to taste like I was eating a Victoria Sponge cake or a sweet scone, but I was wrong and it was a lot more mild than I thought. The brioche style bread - with crusts included - worked well as it was midly sweet, but not too much. However it was a lot to eat in one sitting, and the thick layer of cream made it tricky to finish. When I didn't get a slice of the strawberry in a bite, I found myself having a mouthful of just bread and cream which was an unusual experience. Overall, I think this is a pretty good sweet treat, but I think cut up into smaller sandwich fingers would be much better - and easier to eat. I think it does work well, and much better than I thought, and to truly top it off, all I need now is a chilled glass of champagne to fully accommodate. I can't say it's replaced a savoury sandwich I'd grab on my lunch break, but it was a very good concept, and fitting for the time of year. It's so wrong it's almost so right? Hats off to you, M&S.
