Director Rhys Thomas praises Jeremy Renner's 'genius' performance in Hawkeye

Director Rhys Thomas has praised Jeremy Renner's "genius" performance in Hawkeye. The Welsh director, best known for his work on NBC's Saturday Night Live, directed the 2021 Marvel miniseries Hawkeye, starring Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this week, Rhys praised the actor's portrayal of the character, calling it "genius". "Jeremy frequently didn't want say much, you know," he said. "His character in the script had all this exposition. We had him saying a lot." The director continued, "He was genius (in) that kind of knowing, 'I can, I can say that entire paragraph just like this (grunts).' And he could. Not many people can." Rhys also admitted that he was "as surprised as anybody" when Marvel contacted him about working on the action series. Explaining why he was interested in the job, he said he liked the fact that, unlike most Marvel lead characters, Hawkeye had no superpowers. "You get an opportunity for a bigger budget and it's Marvel," he said. "What interested me in that show was that fans were not interested in Hawkeye because he doesn't have any superpowers. He's a real guy." "The comic book they highlighted for me as a tonal reference was by Matt Fraction, and that was grounded in that kind of energy that this is a real guy who was in pain and (who was) beaten up," Rhys continued. "He made mistakes. It was really the story of an ordinary guy with a poor sense of self-worth." The director added that, to him, the series didn't "feel like Marvel". Hawkeye is the fifth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also stars Hailee Steinfeld.

Jeremy Renner Might Still Return to MCU Despite Turning Down HAWKEYE Season 2 — GeekTyrant

Jeremy Renner may not be done with Hawkeye. After reports surfaced that Renner declined Marvel Studios' offer for Hawkeye Season 2, largely due to what insiders called a lowball paycheck for a grueling 9-month shoot, many fans assumed the Avenger's MCU journey had quietly come to an end. Especially since Renner hasn't been announced for Avengers: Doomsday and Marvel appears to be dialing back on streaming shows starring their marquee heroes. According to trusted scooper Daniel Richtman, 'Marvel [is] still in talks with Jeremy Renner to come back for a season 2 of Hawkeye .' So the door isn't closed just yet. They just need to come to an agreeement. Renner himself recently addressed the situation, saying: "I think it's more the willingness to step away from things," he said, referencing his priorities post-accident. "My daughter's the priority. It's not even a choice. I'm going to be a father to my daughter. If they're going to keep shooting in London or [whatever], it's not gonna work." That said, he's not against the idea. In fact, he seems open, under the right conditions. When asked about rumors of a Raid-inspired story featuring Clint and Kate Bishop fighting Clint's brother, Barney Barton (aka Trickshot), Renner responded with a telling tease: "Maybe some of that's true in there, I don't know. We got into it a little bit storywise and stuff. Everyone was interested in it. I wouldn't want to say no to that. I think there's still a lot of ideas and they've got to figure a lot of things out." And while the potential Season 2 would likely shift more of the spotlight to Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop—especially after Season 1 handed her the bow, Renner seems to understand the value of his presence in the MCU, even if it's not in a lead role. "I'm always game to do it, man," he added. "It's a fun world, and I love being part of it. Selfishly, I like the currency of doing it because of what it means to the kids in the foundation I run." If Renner does return, it'll have to work for him on every level, financially, logistically, and personally. Until then, the future of Clint Barton remains in limbo. But it's good to know the conversation isn't over.

Details on Why Marvel Reportedly Low-Balled Jeremy Renner on HAWKEYE Season 2 — GeekTyrant

Jeremy Renner's return as Clint Barton in Hawkeye was one of the more grounded highlights of Marvel's Disney+ era. The first season was equal parts holiday adventure and character sendoff, but it was never officially billed as the end for Renner's Hawkeye. Renner recently revealed that Marvel made him a lowball offer for Hawkeye Season 2, so he turned it down. he explained: 'They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I'm like, 'Well, it's going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount.'' Renner called out what he believed may have been behind the insulting offer, which involved his near-fatal snowplow accident in 2023. he added: 'I'm like, 'I'm sorry? Why? Did you think I'm only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that's why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.'' Now, industry insiders have added even more fuel to the fire. Jeff Sneider, via The InSneider, suggested the lowball offer was by design: 'Marvel may have offered Renner only half his salary because they knew 'he'd turn them down so they wouldn't have to make a second season of the show.' Then Puck's Matt Belloni chimed in with this brutal assessment: 'Nobody tell Renner the show attracted middling viewership and costs would have come down across the board for a Season 2—that is, if execs weren't lowballing him in the first place so they could pin the cancellation on him, not them.' That right there might be the real crux. Renner's a beloved fcharacter in the MCU, and Marvel avoiding a second season might look worse on them than him. If they make him the fall guy, they sidestep the PR hit of canceling a show outright. At the time of writing, Hawkeye Season 2 hasn't been announced, and neither Marvel nor Renner has offered any official follow-up. Regardless, it certainly seems in line with the kind of manuvering we'd see in Hollywood. Do you think Marvel was really trying to dodge a Season 2?
