SEC Network schedule for Texas A&M takeover revealed
The 2024 calendar year for Texas A&M Athletics was both memorable and forgettable, depending on the sport. However, nothing matches the departure of former Aggies head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle from the program just days after A&M fell to Tennessee in the College World Series Championship matchup, leaving to join the Texas Longhorns in an unpredictable move that only enhanced the rivalry that was renewed on the gridiron a year ago. Still, Texas A&M's championship run was by far one of the most exciting seasons in program history, and will remain in a positive light despite Schlossnagle leaving. Outside of baseball, the softball team nearly made it to the College World Series before losing to Texas in the Super Regionals, while the men's basketball team, during Buzz Williams' final year at the helm, made it back to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season. Texas A&M's 2024 football team entered a new era under head coach Mike Elko, who returned to College Station after two seasons leading the Duke Blue Devils and serving as Jimbo Fisher's defensive coordinator for four seasons. Elko and his new staff were provided a muligan like every new head coach, but after building a 7-1 record despite several key injury issues, the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss, paired with then-freshman QB Marcel Reed's issues in the pocket, were too much to overcome. Despite A&M's 1-4 finish, there were plenty of incredible moments, including the comeback win over LSU during an electric night inside a packed Kyle Field. On Friday, it was announced that Texas A&M will take over the SEC Network's schedule, an annual event that typically occurs in July. 'Glad it's over' Texas HC Jim Schlossnagle is relieved to get past Game 1 vs Texas A&M
'Glad it's over' Texas HC Jim Schlossnagle is relieved to get past Game 1 vs Texas A&M Texas A&M (24-17, 8-11 SEC) lost to No. 1 Texas on the road in Game 1 on Friday night. The Aggies could only muster one run off a late error, losing 2-1 in a pitching duel that saw both starters on the mound last nearly six innings. However, the emotions surrounding Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle facing his former team were one of the national stories of the week. Schlossnagle's departure from College Station after three seasons was controversial, to say the least. The former longtime TCU head coach shared a close friendship with current Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, who previously held the same position in Fort Worth during Schlossnagle's tenure. While leaving for other jobs isn't shocking, Schlossnagle's decision to join the program's fiercest rival just days after losing in the College World Series Championship game has turned the veteran coach into a villain for the Aggie fan base. Still, we're talking about sports, and if we're being honest, none of this was surprising given Texas's legacy and Schlossnagle's friendship with Del Conte. With Game 2 set for late Saturday afternoon, the focus should be on baseball, which Schlossnagle echoed during his post-game press conference. 'Awesome to get the win. Glad it's over, tomorrow should be a little bit easier. Not playing an easier team, but, personally for me it'll be a little bit easier.' Texas A&M coach Michael Earley had a similar reaction, noting that the next two games will be a "dog fight" that will require poise on the mound and power at the plate. Both teams have proven that they belong on the same field. Texas A&M vs. No. 1 Texas will face off at 3:00 p.m. CT. on Saturday, April 26. The game will air on ESPN2. No. 1 Texas will be shorthanded against Texas A&M, according to the latest injury report
No. 1 Texas will be shorthanded against Texas A&M, according to the latest injury report Texas A&M (24-16, 8-10 SEC) is headed cross-town to Austin, Texas, to face No. 1 Texas this weekend, starting Friday night. Amid all the storylines surrounding Longhorns head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who departed College Station for Texas last summer just days after the Aggies fell to Tennessee in the College World Series Championship, the teams are focused on the games at hand. However, No. 1 Texas will be without several players, including starting Friday pitcher Jared Spencer, who will reportedly miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to injury. This is a tough blow for a Longhorns team that needs to excel on the mound to keep the Aggies' hot bats at bay. However, Spencer may not be the only key player out this weekend. Standout freshman outfielder Jonah Williams could also miss the series, as he is listed as questionable heading into Friday night. For the Aggies, pitchers Shane Sdao and Josh Stewart are both out for the season, while third baseman Gavin Grahovac is also out for the year, which isn't new news for Aggie fans. First baseman Blake Binderup has continued to stand out at the plate amid Gavin Kash's previous injury issues. Since Kash has been off the injury report, he has only been back in the lineup once for a brief appearance as the designated hitter. However, due to Binderup's impressive play, he has not regained his starting spot at first. No. 1 Texas will be without its star pitcher vs. Texas A&M this weekend
No. 1 Texas will be without its star pitcher vs. Texas A&M this weekend Texas A&M (24-16, 8-10 SEC) will head to Austin, Texas, to face the No. 1 Texas Longhorns starting Friday night in a game filled with storylines, headlined by former Aggie head coach Jim Schlossnagle leaving College Station for the 40 acres last summer, just days after Texas A&M's College World Series Championship loss to Tennessee. However, the Aggies are taking every SEC series one game at a time, no matter the stakes surrounding the Lone Star Showdown. Both head coaches are focused on Game 1 this week, but Schlossnagle will be without his top arm. Ace pitcher Jared Spencer (4-1, 3.27 ERA) will be unavailable against Texas A&M this weekend, placing a giant hole in the Longhorns' plans to thwart the Aggie bats. Texas A&M's strategy remains the same on the mound, as Ryan Prager will start on Friday, followed by Justin Lamkin on Saturday, followed by Myles Patton on Sunday, which, for the most part, has worked well during the last three SEC series. Still, Prager's high ERA during conference play is worrying, but A&M's offense has all but made up for his issues on the mound. Without Spencer, the Longhorns will likely go with RHP Ruger Riojas (7-1, 3.33 ERA), who has been solid. However, this will force pitching coach Max Weiner to switch things up for Saturday and Sunday. Texas A&M will head to Austin, Texas, to face No. 1 Texas starting Friday, April 25, at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network. Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. College baseball analyst believes Texas A&M has a 'talent' issue this season
College baseball analyst believes Texas A&M has a 'talent' issue this season Before No. 19 Texas A&M (10-7, 0-1 SEC) takes on No. 17 Alabama (17-1, 1-0 SEC) in Game 2 of this weekend's SEC opening series, the Aggies are still reeling from Friday night's disappointing 6-4 Game 1 loss behind head coach Michael Earley's highly questionable decision to pull redshirt sophomore pitcher Luke Jackson during a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth. Replaced by sophomore Kaeden Wilson for a clean half inning, veteran Brad Rudis took the mound. He immediately allowed consecutive solo home runs as the Crimson Tide's sudden offense silenced Blue Bell Park to a dull roar after what looked like a potential Aggie comeback in the works. Overall, this was a poor coaching decision that deserves some grace, but sitting at 10-7 and 0-1 in SEC play won't allow much leeway from an Aggie fan base that experienced immense success during the 2024 season. Still, games like this usually result in overreactions from the media, including college baseball analyst Jake Mckeever, who provided one of the odder takes regarding Texas A&M "talent" on the roster compared to what former Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle has inherited/built with the Texas Longhorns, who are currently 15-1 on the year. "Texas, this year, is what everybody thought A&M was going to be" What the Longhorns have accomplished in 16 games under a new coaching staff is impressive. However, one game into SEC play and declaring Texas as a College World Series Championship contender is farfetched. In his final statement in the video, Mckeever shared his opinion that Texas A&M doesn't possess enough talent and that Schlossnagle and former pitching coach Max Weiner were the primary reasons Texas A&M excelled in 2024. "It's kind of showing how little talent Texas A&M actually has and that most of it was Jim Schlossnagle and Max Weiner" This is what we call a "hot take" that will result in engagement across social media. Still, knowing that nearly every starter from the championship returned this season, talent across the board is not the central issue. However, referencing Max Weiner has to do with A&M's bullpen issues, which are based more on youth than talent.
