Iranian Parliament approves draft law on strategic treaty with Russia
Tehran - Saba: The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran (parliament) approved the "General Principles of the Draft Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Iran and the Russian Federation" on Wednesday. Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported that "this ratification was approved with 191 votes in favor, 8 against, and 2 abstentions, out of a total of 201 votes." Last April, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law ratifying the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran, according to a statement published on the official website of the Russian government's laws and decrees. According to the statement, "The agreement was signed on January 17, 2025, during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Moscow." According to the document, the two sides seek to deepen and expand relations in all areas of mutual interest, enhance cooperation in the field of security and defense, and closely coordinate activities at the regional and global levels, consistent with a long-term, comprehensive, and strategic partnership. According to the statement, "The two sides agreed that if one of the parties is subjected to aggression, the other party will not provide any assistance to the aggressor." Speaking at a joint press conference in Jakarta, President Prabowo emphasised that Australia is not only a neighbouring country but also a strategic partner of Indonesia. As such, several agreements signed across various sectors will continue to be implemented. In the field of defence, Indonesia is committed to finalising the ratification process of the defence cooperation agreement that was agreed upon last year, and continuing discussions on ways to improve and enhance collaboration in this area, he said. On the economic front, the President encouraged stronger cooperation in trade and investment, and called for Australia's participation in strengthening Indonesia's agriculture and fisheries sectors, and MSMEs. He expressed his hope that Indonesia's fruits and aquatic products will increasingly meet international market standards, including those of Australia. Inviting Australia to engage more deeply in economic cooperation amid current global uncertainties, the Indonesian leader stressed that in today's volatile global economic environment, the relationship between Indonesia and Australia is becoming increasingly important and will bring greater benefits to both countries and their peoples. The two leaders also discussed opportunities for cooperation in food security, energy transition, critical minerals, and the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem. Notably, President Prabowo emphasised that his government will pursue the implementation of bilateral commitments, including the finalisation of the 2025–2029 Action Plan of the Indonesia – Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement. President Putin began by expressing appreciation for President Sisi's participation in this year's celebration, which demonstrates the deep-rooted, solid and historical relations between the two friendly countries and peoples. President Sisi congratulated President Putin and the Russian people on the occasion of Victory Day. The President commended Egypt's strategic relations with Russia, which are grounded in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between the two countries in 2018. President Sisi attended on Thursday a banquet hosted by Russian President Putin for the heads of state and foreign delegations who are in Moscow to participate in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The President commended Egypt's strategic relations with Russia, which are grounded in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between the two countries in 2018. President Sisi acknowledged the growing momentum in bilateral relations in multiple sectors, including the establishment of the Russian Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the construction of the Dabaa nuclear power plant. The two leaders looked forward to the successful conclusion of the upcoming joint committee meeting, which will convene this May to discuss means of fostering bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest. President Sisi and President Putin reiterated the imperative to restore stability in the Middle East, particularly in the Gaza Strip, confirming the crucial need to strengthen efforts toward preventing regional escalation. In this context, President Sisi highlighted Egypt's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, secure the release of hostages and detainees, and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the sector to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation there President Sisi asserted the vital importance of reaching a final resolution to the Palestinian cause through the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, along the June 4, 1967 borders, as the only guarantee for lasting peace in the region. President Putin expressed profound appreciation for Egypt's role in the region, reaffirming Russia's full support for Egypt's endeavors to restore calm and achieve regional stability and for the Gaza reconstruction plan approved by the extraordinary Arab summit hosted by Cairo in March 2025. The talks also covered the latest developments in Syria, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian crisis. President El-Sisi underlined Egypt's position calling for diplomatic solutions to international crises in a manner that preserves international peace and security.
