Cowboys Announce On-Field Plan For Micah Parsons at Mandatory Minicamp

Cowboys Announce On-Field Plan For Micah Parsons at Mandatory Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Star edge rusher Micah Parsons and coach Brian Schotteheimer hooked up on the phone over the weekend. Advertisement That was fun. On Tuesday, Micah is in attendance here at The Star for the start of mandatory minicamp, with a now-revealed plan to participate in the workouts. "He will be on the field doing some stuff,'' Schotty told us before the practice session. This follows up a viral social media trend where people call their friends out of the blue to say "goodnight". ... with Micah having called Tyler Smith, Trevon Diggs, Osa Odighizuwa and KaVontae Turpin ... and then seeing things turning a bit serious when Parsons called first-year coach Schottenheimer. "Look, I know this is weird for everybody man, but look you're handling everything the right way, bro," Schotty said after Parsons explained how he reached out to check on his coach. Advertisement Schottenheimer, of course, was referencing Parsons' ongoing contract negotiations. "This thing's going to get worked out, and again I'm thrilled to see where we take this thing, man,'' the coach said. "We're building something special and you're going to be a huge part of it, bro." This "promise" from Schotty is reassuring news that Parsons will soon be signed to a long-term deal to stay in Dallas. Regardless of how much the contract is worth - what reports could touch $40 million a year - fans will be glad that things are finally settled. And Micah's response that night to the coach? Advertisement "See you Monday," Parsons said during the call, a hint to his attendance at the upcoming mandatory minicamp festivities this week. After a team dinner Monday, the Cowboys have three days of work. Then they have six weeks off before flying to Oxnard for training camp. To this point, Parsons has vowed to not use a holdout as leverage in his negotiations. Tuesday is the first official day for progress on this "promise" issued by Schottenheimer. Micah has stated how important it is to him to be with the team and with this coach. And so here he is. Cowboys Minicamp Preview QBs Fight On Dak Prescott-Led Depth Chart

Cowboys Minicamp Preview QBs Fight On Dak Prescott-Led Depth Chart originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys' latest quarterback dart throw appears to be better than their last, with Joe Milton - as has reported from our in-person OTAs observations - already moving up to No. 2 on the depth chart behind Dak Prescott. Advertisement The freak athlete, who at 6-6 and 240 has a habit of starting practice sessions with a backflip, has been taking the majority of the second-team reps at OTAs, and as we know with Joe, while he's athletically gifted, as a passer, he needs a little work. During OTAs, he threw a Pick-six to Damone Clark, which was returned for a touchdown, but then came right back with a monster bomb to Jalen Brooks, so you get everything at quarterback with Joe. And that brings us to minicamp at The Star. With a host of things that will be keeping an eye on, one will be whether Joe can solidify his standing as Dak's backup and keep Will Grier in the rearview mirror. David Butler II-Imagn Images Over the course of the three mandatory minicamp days starting Tuesday, Milton will get the chance to take the majority of the second-team reps (maybe some first-team ones too), and it is here where he must continue his trajectory towards the backup role. Advertisement And he's already been getting in work with young receivers Brooks and Ryan Flournoy as he looks to develop chemistry ahead of camp. We know all about Joe and his cannon of an arm - he showed that off in his one pro appearance last year before this offseason's trade from the Patriots - but what we want to see at minicamp is whether he can turn himself from a highlight reel into a capable (at this stage) backup quarterback. The franchise wants that to happen, and he proved he can be at OTAs, but now, with minicamp here and training camp around the corner, "Bazooka Joe" has a chance to consolidate his standing in Brian Schottenheimer's offense. Can Milton become a capable No. 2 on the Dak-led depth chart? Or maybe even something more? Advertisement Say it's so, Joe. Cowboys Major Trade Results from Deep-Dive Research on Pickens

FRISCO - "Deep-dive research'' into a wide receiver before the Dallas Cowboys trade for him? It offers no guarantees. After all, the Cowboys not only did that groundwork on Amari Cooper, but then followed it up with a $20 million per year contract that they soon after found so regrettable that they moved him to Cleveland for a paltry fifth-round pick. Advertisement But this time is different. Right? The move to land Pittsburgh Steelers receiver George Pickens in a post-NFL Draft trade is the result of the Cowboys' lengthy look at the idea - and at other ideas. Dallas made no secret of wanting to acquire an "explosive No. 2 receiver'' to play alongside $34 million APY star CeeDee Lamb; COO Stephen Jones openly said so. reported before the draft that Dallas was in the process of identifying a handful of veteran receivers who might be available via trade. It is now being reported that "the team considered its options and felt, throughout, that the best course was to let the draft play out first, then more seriously consider making a run at a receiver.'' Advertisement That's not entirely accurate. After putting down some conversational groundwork with the Steelers, we're told, Dallas opted to see what would happen with top draft target Tetairoa McMillan. If he's available at pick No. 12? Dallas selects him ... and there is no Pickens trade. Said Jones to Albert Breer: 'We had a nice list of guys that we were looking at, comparing that to what was available in the draft, and giving up the pick vs. picking one. And as you know, when you pick a receiver in the draft, you get him for a good number for four years, so obviously that was one of the routes we were looking at hard.' Advertisement But McMillan went earlier to Carolina. So Alabama guard Tyler Booker - straight off Will McClay's Big Board, really - comes to Dallas at No. 12. ... But only after Dallas considered another move, back from 12, to pick up a first- and a second-rounder from Houston. When that didn't happen, Cowboys reconsidered the trade options and went back to their phone calls. We know now that Baltimore's Rashod Bateman was a discussion item, as were other guys. But on Sunday - after the draft was over - as reported that morning, the Cowboys were back on the phone with Pittsburgh. We also know that Dallas staffers were on the phone with other people who might offer background into what makes Pickens tick ... Advertisement Including what some think makes him tick like a time bomb. That meant some on-the-sly calls to Pittsburgh and it meant checking in with some folks who knew Pickens at Georgia. And in the end, the research was done. A 2026 third-round pick for a rental (Pickens is on the final year of his deal) with either a comp pick or an eventually re-signing of the player would work. The locker room structure led by Dak Prescott and new coach Brian Schottenheimer would work, too. 'He's just a dynamic receiver,' Jones said. 'Everybody says we're looking for a 2. I mean, George can be a 1. He's got that type of talent. He's got unbelievable ball-tracking ability. He's got plenty of juice and he's a fiery competitor. Advertisement And we love that, he plays with an edge, and we think he'd be a good fit for our team.' Actually, again, "everybody'' didn't say Dallas was "looking for an (explosive) 2.'' Stephen said it. And then, to his and the Cowboys credit? They pulled the trigger on a controversial deal after their deep-dive research. Now all that needs to happen is ... For it to work. Cowboys Sources Update Micah Contract Talks With Jerry vs. 'Fake News'

FRISCO - Fake news. The media covering the Dallas Cowboys' contract negotiations with franchise superstar defender Micah Parsons has quite often dropped the ball at every turn. The truth about meetings and offers and agreements have been ignored. Advertisement The villainization of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has become a popular parlor game ... and it is now creating a fake-news portrayal of the relationship between Jones and Parsons. Jones recently issued an off-hand comment about Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, stating, "The agent is not a concern here … I don't know his name.' Is that "disrespectful''? Or is it true? Is it Jerry's way of putting the powerful Mulugheta "in his place''? Or is it because Jerry doesn't know how to pronounce his last name? In any event, a media post on X triggered Parsons into announcing his devotion in Mulugheta and saying, "There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David!" Advertisement That's a lovely sentiment. But it doesn't override the fact that as first reported on Monday, March 23, Parsons has meet with Jerry and Stephen Jones on at least three occasions and has talked contract specifics ... Without the agent being involved. And now an assortment of media numbskulls are attempting to turn this circus into a Parsons vs. Jones battle - and they are, maybe purposely, getting it all wrong. Micah is a loyalty guy and his agent has a job to do. But Micah's loyalty extends to Jerry, who he fondly calls "my dawg.'' If you read this space, you know the truth: As we were first to report, Parsons and Jerry and Stephen Jones have engaged in multiple contract talks in recent weeks - three of them. And in those talks, the ideas of the new contract being for five years and being worth about $40 million per year have been broached. Advertisement Do the math: The five years and the $40 million is where the much-hyped $200 million number is coming from ... and yes, with that framework, Parsons' view is that he would be a "Cowboy for Life'' and it would make him the highest-paid on-QB in NFL history. On Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings, Jones went so far as to say that the two sides are essentially in agreement on a deal. 'Most of the issues,'' Jones said, "we're in agreement on.' But Mulughata isn't "in agreement'' because he hasn't been involved. That's not about "disrespect.'' It's about facts. Good for Parsons; he is standing up for his agent. Now it's time for the agent to stand up for Micah. Advertisement The update here? Sources tell that Micah has nudged the Joneses to contact the agent to close the deal. That can happen in an instant. Of course, the agent could be the one who initiates that same call. No "disrespect.'' No "fake news.'' Just one phone call to end what is too often a silly $200 million game of who-blinks-first "Chicken.'' Cowboys Jerry Jones Accused of Trades Lies

FRISCO - So, were there actual fires? Or only more public relations smoke? When it comes to Jerry Jones and his pre-draft proclamation about "substantive" trades being in the works, some Dallas Cowboys fans - and media - slid to the edge of their seats waiting for the show. Where there's smoke there's going to be fire, they reasoned. Others, meanwhile, skeptically yawned and bet that it was merely the latest in a long line of attempts by the owner to keep his team relevant. Advertisement "We're looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft," Jones said a couple days before the draft. "Two pretty substantive trades." So, what happened? The Cowboys were linked - by and various outlets - to trades for receivers such as Courtland Sutton of the Denver Broncos, George Pickens of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill. Some even urged and/or thought Jerry would pull a blockbuster and somehow move up from No. 12 to No. 2 to draft Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. Our reporting suggests the Cowboys made and received calls about a major trade or two. And, yes, for a receiver. There was also take a trade down with the Houston Texans. But ... Advertisement In the end, nothing. Not that the Cowboys - by most accounts - didn't have a productive draft. Almost unanimously they are getting high grades from draft experts. But those that think Jones is the owner who cried wolf - Cowboys fans among them -now have another bullet in the chamber. Included in that group is Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Remind you, he's the same guy who writes a story about Shedeur Sanders potentially going back to Colorado, gloats about the story being the most popular in the site's 23-year history and then - buried down deep - admits it's a move that was never realistically going to happen. Over the weekend Florio chimed in with a lot of disillusioned Cowboys fans, by poking fun at Jerry's latest broken promise. Advertisement "Fans and media have begun to wake up to the notion that Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones is more carnival barker than trophy chaser," he writes. "It's not about winning, it's about being interesting. And he always finds ways to be interesting." Knowing the state of his impatient and unhappy fan base, Jerry probably shouldn't have excitedly announced "Hey guys, we're working on some big trades!". Lots of teams made calls about deals that never happened during the draft. But when it's Jerry and the Cowboys, critics like Florio are there to pounce when those efforts don't come to fruition. The truth? Jerry Jones, when it comes to trade-talk reveals, can be both a carnival barker and a non-liar.
