'Modern full-back' De Cuyper will 'benefit' from Brighton move

New Brighton left-back Maxim de Cuyper has "picked the right environment" by joining the Seagulls, says Belgium football podcaster Ben 24-year-old joined earlier this month from Belgian Pro League side Club Brugge for a reported £ to BBC Radio Sussex's Albion Unlimited podcast, Jackson said: "I wouldn't say I was surprised he was going to the Premier League, but part of me was surprised he went to Brighton with some of the other clubs he was linked with."There was a lot of talk about Italian sides like AC Milan in Serie A, so it always felt like he would end up in Italy. But, when Brighton popped up from the Premier League I thought, 'yeah, that does kind of make sense'."There is the link between Brighton and another Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise anyway so it's not like they wouldn't have that understanding of who he is."For him, while he may sacrifice a bit European football, in the long run he should benefit more from this move than one of the Serie A giants."He is joining a side in Brighton where development is encouraged in the way they bring players through. I think he is ready and I think he has picked the right environment."Full-back De Cuyper has spent his whole career in Belgium, but played in the Champions League for Brugge, including games against Aston where his best position is, Jackson explained: "As a left-back he is most comfortable, that is where he played in youth teams and Westerlo."It was tricky when he went to Club Brugge as they had just signed another young left-back and they were trying to fit them both in. They played De Cuyper at right-back and it didn't really work. They didn't get the best out of him and he looked really uncomfortable."He has played slightly further up on international duty, but you don't want him further up than left midfield."He is very creative, his assist numbers are good and he has got an eye for goal."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

Brighton sign Belgium defender De Cuyper

BRIGHTON & Hove Albion have signed Belgium defender Maxim De Cuyper on a five-year contract from Club Brugge, the Premier League club said on Saturday. De Cuyper, 24, helped Brugge win the Belgian Pro League in 2023-24, and the Belgian Cup last season. He made his Belgium debut in June 2024, and has earned 10 international caps, scoring three goals. "He has a great reputation for creativity and has shown his ability across different positions, although we primarily see him challenging for a left-back spot with us," Brighton coach Fabian Huerzeler said in a statement. Paris Saint-Germain are looking to strengthen their depth at left-back behind Nuno Mendes, and sporting advisor Luís Campos may have his sights set on Belgium for a solution. Football Insider reports that Bournemouth are eyeing De Cuyper as a potential replacement for Milos Kerkez, who is attracting interest from Liverpool. 🚨 Bournemouth are targeting Club Brugge's Maxim de Cuyper should they need to sign a replacement for Milos Kerkez, who is wanted by Liverpool. RB Leipzig interested in Club Brugge full-back Maxim De Cuyper

Sacha Tavolieri reports that RB Leipzig are interested in Club Brugge full-back Maxim De Cuyper as he looks to take the next step in his career in the summer. De Cuyper has attracted interest from both Italy and Germany. AC Milan sees the 24-year-old as a potential successor to Theo Hernandez if the Frenchman decides to leave in the summer. Leipzig are said to have De Cuyper top of their list when it comes to left-backs as they lack depth in the position behind David Raum, as shown by his recent injury this season. The left-back's contract in Brugge expires in 2028 and will cost around €20m. Currently, Leipzig has two Club Brugge alumni in their squad. Loïs Openda and Antonio Nusa have both played for the club and have then gone on to have a successful period at the Red Bull Arena. However, both have struggled this season, as have Leipzig on the pitch. GGFN | Jack Meenan
