Aldi shoppers warned to check receipts over mystery charge after till glitch
Customers were baffled over being charged an added 'deposit' for certain products CHARGED UP Aldi shoppers warned to check receipts over mystery charge after till glitch Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ALDI has urged shoppers to check their receipts as they may be owed refunds over mystery charges that appeared following a till glitch. Dozens of baffled shoppers took to social media this week to complain about being charged a "deposit" of up to 25p on bottled drinks. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 One Aldi shopper from Park Road in Castleford shared a picture of their receipt to Facebook showing the deposit charges (Credit: Aldi UK Shoppers) The supermarket confirmed to The Sun that customers in some stores were "incorrectly" charged, adding that the error has since been corrected. It said any customers who were overcharged should take their receipt to their nearest Aldi store for a refund. Aldi's Castleford store in Yorkshire was one of the branches hit by the till glitch. One of the store's customers posted a picture of their receipt to Facebook, revealing they had been charged a 15p deposit on each of the two 2L bottles of Diet Cola they had purchased. Another customer at Aldi in Rothwell, Leeds, also posted to Facebook that they had been charged 15p on a 2l bottle of Vive. Aldi's Hindley Green branch in Manchester also appears to have been impacted, with one customer claiming they were charged a 15p deposit for two bottles of orange juice. Other customers claimed to have been charged 25p deposits on some drinks purchases. Aldi shoppers in Ireland are charged deposits of 15p or 25p on plastic bottles or aluminium cans, which can be reclaimed once the empty items are returned to vending machines, as part of the government's Deposit Return Scheme. However, the Aldi did not confirm if the charging errors at UK tills were related to this. An Aldi spokesperson told The Sun: 'A minor pricing change was incorrectly applied to a small number of products in some of our stores. The error has now been corrected, and the products are on sale as normal. Aldi urgently recalls £3.29 freezer essential over dangerous disease that affects 1 in 100 of Brits 'We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and would encourage anyone that believes they were overcharged to take their receipt to their nearest Aldi store for a refund.' The German discounter is planning to open more than 20 new stores in the UK before the end of the year as part of a £650million expansion. It recently confirmed the locations of 11 of its new openings, which includes branches in East Sussex, Durham and Chesterfield. However, it's pulling up the shutters on branches in Deeside, Market Harborough and London over the coming months. In May, it revealed another list of 10 locations where it wants to open stores this summer, including in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk. The budget chain has injected £55million into its capital city stores alone, with four of the new branches being in London. PLUS other food dupes you can get at Aldi CAN'T COKE WITH THIS Shoppers rush to Aldi to pick up fizzy drink dupe that's £2 cheaper than Coca-Cola favourite & 'it tastes better' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DIET Coke lovers are sharing their love for a comparable option in Aldi. Diet Coke is one of the UK's leading soft drink brands with ardent fans across the country, but now people are flocking to Aldi's cheaper dupe. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Aldi's Diet Coke dupe is a hit with shoppers Credit: Aldi 3 The Vive Diet Cola is said to taste just as good as the original Credit: Damien McFadden Part of Aldi's Vive range of soft drinks, the Diet Cola has been described as "spicier" in taste than the original brand. What's even better is that Aldi's Diet Cola is much cheaper, with a six-pack costing £1.60 or just 9p per can. That more than half the price less than an eight-pack at Sainsbury's which costs £5.20 or 18p per can. The cost of a 2-litre bottle of Aldi's Diet Cola is just 49p, at Sainsbury's the equivalent Diet Coke bottle will set you back £2.55. Fans of the Diet Coke dupe took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the product. "[It's] is a steal and tastes the same or better than the real Diet Coke. I love it," wrote one person. Another added: "I like the Aldi diet cola, better than diet coke." And a third commented: "I LOVE IT! Seriously it taste the best to me in comparison to all the other off brand diet sodas. Just has a bit more spice to it. I'm a big fan. It has caffeine but the amount isn't listed." The Diet Cola is not the only bargain dupe available at Aldi, with shoppers raving about their other products. Savvy shoppers have shared that Aldi has a great dupe of a Cadbury favourite. I found a 40-year-old unopened can of coke up a mountain while hiking - so I decided to crack it open and TASTE it Aldi's new Honeycomb Clusters are a dupe of Cadbury's popular Crunchie Clusters. Chocolate fans will need to visit their nearest Aldi to grab the new snacks, as the dupe isn't available online. It comes after Home Bargains revealed their dupe of an elegant Polish chocolate bar, which is 92 per cent cheaper than the original. When's the best time to shop at Aldi? WHEN it comes to shopping at Aldi, the best time to do so depends on what you want to buy. For reduced items - when shops open Red sticker items are rare at Aldi's 830 UK stores, but the supermarket says that none of its food goes to waste so there are some to be found - if you're quick. A spokesman for the supermarket said: "All items are reduced to 50 per cent of the recommend sales price before stores open on their best before or use by dates." That means you have the best chance of finding reduced food items if you go into stores as soon as it opens. Opening times vary by shop but a majority open from 7am or 8am. You can find your nearest store's times by using the supermarket's online shop finder tool. For Specialbuys - Thursdays and Sundays Specialbuys are Aldi's weekly collection of items that it doesn't normally sell, which can range from pizza ovens to power tools. New stock comes into stores every Thursday and Sunday, so naturally, these are the best days to visit for the best one-off special deals. For an even better chance of bagging the best items, head there for your local store's opening time. Remember: once they're gone, they're gone, so if there's something you really want, visit as early as possible Remember to compare prices It is important to always shop around as you might find a cheaper alternative. Websites like Trolley and Price Spy let you compare thousands of products across different retailers to find the best price. Price Spy even lets you see how much an item has cost over time, so you can see if the current price is a good deal. A quick scan on the Google Shopping/Product tab will also bring up how much retailers are selling a certain item for too.

Supermarket's 28p own-brand Diet Coke is ‘so good' you can't tell difference
If you're a Diet Coke fan, I have no doubt that you take your allegiance to the fizzy drink very seriously. So the idea of swapping out the branded version for a supermarket own-brand cola might feel like a personal attack. But often these versions are much cheaper than the real thing, so we decided to put them to the test to see if we could save ourselves some money when it comes to our carbonated addiction. We tried five supermarket own-brand Diet Colas and while none of them were deemed to be better than the original, a bargain retailer had a surprising gem that was on par. Keep on reading to find out which drinks we liked and which didn't go down as well, starting with the least enjoyable and ending with the top scorer… Sorry Tesco, but your Diet Cola has nothing on the real thing. I could instantly tell wasn't actual Diet Coke – it just tastes fake. I don't think I'd be able to make it through an entire can… Reviewed by Kristina Beanland, lifestlye editor Rating: 2/5 This will probably sound a bit odd, but Asda's Diet Cola tastes thinner than the other drinks in this taste test. Almost like it's been watered down a little bit? It's notably less artificially sweet than the Tesco one, but certainly not the best of the bunch. Reviewed by Courtney Pochin, specialist food writer Rating: 2.5/5 For 49p, this one from Sainsbury's is a solid option if you're looking to save money. It's not anywhere near as crisp and fizzy as Diet Coke, but it's got a good flavour and doesn't taste too sweet. Reviewed by Courtney Pochin Rating: 3/5 Lidl Freeway Diet Cola, 49p for 2L bottle or £1.79 for a six-pack of cans Lidl came out on top in our full fat Coca-Cola taste test recently, but the retailer has just missed out on the top spot in this one. The Freeway Diet Cola doesn't have as much fizz and actualy tastes a bit flat, which is a shame as the drink itself is pretty nice with just the right level of sweetness – I'd definitely have another one. Reviewed by Courtney Pochin Rating: 4/5 Aldi Diet Vive, £1.69 for six pack (28p a can) As a Diet Coke superfan, it would take a lot for me to give up my favourite drink, but I might be willing (on occasion) to swap it for Aldi's version which is very good. More Trending It's really hard to distinguish between the two and in a blind taste test of both it took a while to work out which was which. The difference is so subtle, and again it just comes down to a little less fizz in the Diet Vive. Reviewed by Kristina Beanland View More » Rating: 4.5/5 Do you have a story to share?
