Dover police invite public to free National Night Out event

DOVER — Police Chief William Breault announced the city's Police Department will host a National Night Out event 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the police station at 46 Chestnut St. The event is free and open to the public, giving community members an opportunity to meet with police officers, discuss issues, learn what the police do, and unite with the common goal of crime prevention and safety. The public will be able to take tours of the station and see a variety of displays around the building including some of the specialized equipment and vehicles police use. These will include a police cruiser, the police motorcycle, the crime scene vehicle, and the tactical rescue vehicle. Several officers, including a K9 (police dog) officer will attend. 'The Dover Police Department recognizes the importance of interacting with our community and the value of positive police-community partnerships. National Night Out gives the community and our officers an opportunity to meet and talk in a casual and fun setting. This goes a long way toward solving community problems as a team,' Breault said. There will also be other City of Dover departments as well as community organizations on hand to provide literature and other information related to health, safety, and wellness. Information on drug prevention, treatment and recovery resources, violence prevention, and local mental health resources will be available to the public through various booths at the event. The Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 443 will be outside the station cooking burgers and hot dogs to be offered free for the public. Dover's National Night Out is a family oriented event and is affiliated with National Night Out, which involves over 35 million people in more than 10,000 communities across the nation. The Dover Police Department's Facebook page will soon feature more information. People looking to get involved can contact Lt. Alex Mitrushi at (603) 516-6122 or This article originally appeared on Fosters Daily Democrat: Dover police invite public to free National Night Out event

Investigation underway after Dover-Sherborn students shared explicit photos

Investigation underway after Dover-Sherborn students shared explicit photos An investigation is underway at Dover-Sherborn Middle School, where police say male students were sharing explicit photos. Police say they found boys had shared pictures of middle school girls clothed and one student was also sharing nude photos with unknown identities. 'With the technology that's available to young people today, we are in a whole new world this is only the opening, the beginning of what we're going to see probably a great deal more,' said Peter Elikann, Boston 25's legal expert. Police say one of the students was charged in this case, but Superintendent Beth McCoy says the judge dismissed those charges, and all families of any students involved have been notified. An email was sent out to families this week, raising concerns over this investigation. 'It is important to know that some of the statements contained in the email are not factual and could be misleading,' said Beth McCoy, Superintendent of Dover-Sherborn Schools, in a letter Wednesday. 'We take very seriously our responsibility to protect the safety and due process rights of every student in our schools. District officials have taken appropriate action throughout this process to adhere to federal, state and district policies and protocols and will continue to do so.' 'At this point, it's not clear to us it may just be some young people who are using very poor judgement and doing something very, very unfair and mean, however it may not be a violation of the law,' said Elikann. Superintendent McCoy says this incident took place last fall, off school grounds, and they believe the photos of girls from the middle and high school were taken off the internet. 'Our Department placed a high premium on supporting the identified victims and prioritizing their well-being throughout. The Dover Police Department remains committed to the safety and dignity of all — especially our youth,' said Chief Joseph Vinci of the Dover Police Department. The superintendent says support services have been provided to any student involved in this case. She also says they hired an independent investigator to look into whether there was a Code of Conduct, Title IX, or Bullying violation here, and that investigation is still in progress. Delaware 911 system adds live video streaming, photo sharing capabilities

Delaware is upgrading its Enhanced 911 system to include features that will allow callers to stream live video, send photos and use real-time text translation during emergencies. These enhancements are designed to improve communication between callers and first responders, enabling faster and more effective emergency response. With the upgraded system, 911 callers will be able to share images directly from their phones, stream live video and communicate through real-time translated text. The system includes TTY capabilities and is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Authorities say these capabilities will help dispatchers better assess emergencies such as vehicle crashes, medical incidents and fire scenes. The Dover Police Department is among the first in the nation to adopt the upgraded technology, according to state officials. Gov. Matt Meyer and Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security Secretary Joshua Bushweller will attend a demonstration of the system's new capabilities at the Dover Police Department on April 17. All municipalities are already connected to the Enhanced 911 system, and the state's Public Safety Answering Points are expected to fully implement the new features by 2026. PUBLIC TRANSIT CUTS: How proposed SEPTA service reduction to Delaware may leave some riders, commuters stranded The Enhanced 911 system automatically displays a caller's location and phone number at a public safety answering point, which handles emergency calls in their designated coverage areas. Delaware operates nine PSAPs, each responsible for answering all 911 calls in their respective regions. To ensure timely response, the system requires PSAPs to transfer calls to the appropriate agency within 10 seconds. Delaware voters first approved the creation of the Enhanced 911 system in 1988. It is funded through a 60-cent monthly surcharge on telephone lines, established by the state Legislature in 1994.
