Unpacking claims Ilhan Omar's daughter called for 'death to the colonial empire' on Instagram
In June 2025, rumors abounded that Isra Hirsi, daughter of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, had posted "death to the colonial empire" from Los Angeles to Rafah in Gaza on an Instagram story. Instagram stories are posts that disappear after 24 hours unless the accounts that post them highlight them on their profile page. For example, X user End Wokeness shared a screen capture of the supposed Instagram story alongside a photograph of Hirsi with her mother Omar (archived): As of this writing, the End Wokeness post had gained 10,000 and 660,000 views. The screen capture appeared on other X posts, including one by far-right political activist Laura Loomer (archived), who said Hirsi, who is Black, wanted "violence in the LA riots and calling for the end of Western Civilization." Another accused Hirsi of hating her own country, the U.S., and of wanting "a race war" (archived). Further, Snopes users searched the website seeking to confirm the veracity of these claims. In addition, conservative news outlet The Daily Caller published a report making these same allegations. However, due to the nature of Instagram stories and the fact that more than 24 hours had passed since Hirsi supposedly posted it, Snopes could not confirm she had indeed done so. We contacted her via Instagram direct messages to ask whether she had and we will update the story should she respond. However, we were able to confirm that the Instagram story Hirsi allegedly reposted did exist. It was created by Instagram user @__public_library, whose bio gave a first name — Amanda — self-describing as a writer, care worker, mother and a "revert" — which is how some converts to Islam describe themselves. The term "reversion" is sometimes preferred to the term "conversion," based on the belief that babies who are born with a Muslim nature and raised in other religions and cultures will return to their innate Muslim nature. Indeed, one of her stories on June 11, 2025, indicated @__public_library had "reverted" in September 2024: (Instagram user @__public_library) Many of her posts related to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a result of the Israel-Hamas war. Indeed, on June 8, 2025, @__public_library posted a series of images with text and a song by Natalia Lafourcade titled "Hasta la Raíz" (archived). One of the images was the same that appeared in Hirsi's alleged Instagram story, showing children playing jump rope on a dirt road with the text: "From LA to Rafah, there is one common oppressor. Death to the colonial empire. Life for our children." The post appeared to draw a parallel between the Israel-Hamas war and the confrontations between protesters in Los Angeles and Immigration and Customs Enforcement on the weekend of June 9, 2025. Below the post, the user had written the following (emphasis ours): I am the Granddaughter of Mexican migrants.I am the daughter of an occupied land.I am the mother of resistance.I am both witness and the keeper of generational is a never-ending empires must end in occupied "America" to occupied Palestine We found no indication that Hirsi followed @__public_library, though it is not necessary to follow a public Instagram account to reshare one of their posts. Hirsi, who is Black and a Muslim, has also frequently posted in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, including on posts that aimed to share personal news. For example, she used the tag #FreePalestine in the post where she announced her graduation from Barnard College at Columbia University. The post also included a photo of her holding up a Palestinian flag on stage during the graduation ceremony (archived):In April 2025, Hirsi said she had been suspended from Barnard College after taking part in a pro-Palestine protest on campus (archived): As of this writing, there isn't enough evidence to determine whether Hirsi did or did not reshare @__public_library's Instagram story. We will update this article if and when Hirsi responds to our request for comment. Ibrahim, Nur. "What We Know about Trump Deploying National Guard for LA Protests." 'When you run away you are a coward': South Africa President Ramaphosa slams Afrikaners as Trump grants them US refuge
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa (left) and US President Donald Trump (Picture credit: AP) Soth African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned a group of white Afrikaners who arrived in the United States as refugees, calling them 'cowards' for fleeing the country. Speaking on Monday, Ramaphosa said those leaving were turning their backs on efforts to rebuild South Africa and avoid confronting its challenges. Speaking at an agricultural event in the Free State, Ramaphosa said those who left were abandoning their country rather than helping it move forward. 'As South Africans, we are resilient. We don't run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve our problems,' he said. 'That's a real cowardly act.' — EndWokeness (@EndWokeness) Ramaphosa added that he believed those who had left would soon regret it: 'I can bet you that they will be back soon because there is no country like South Africa.' The Afrikaners, a white ethnic minority descended from Dutch, German and French settlers, have been at the centre of a growing row between Washington and Pretoria. The Trump administration claims the group faces racial discrimination in South Africa, citing unproven allegations of land seizures and violence against white farmers. Rights groups have sharply criticised the move, calling it a distortion of reality and an affront to millions of refugees fleeing war and famine across the globe who have been denied entry to the US under Trump's policies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 Reasons to Plug This Into Your Home Today elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo President Trump, speaking Monday as the first batch of Afrikaner arrivals landed at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, repeated his claim that a 'genocide' was taking place in South Africa. 'It's a genocide that's taking place,' he said, offering no evidence but insisting he would raise the issue directly with Ramaphosa during their scheduled meeting at the White House on 21 May. Ramaphosa, speaking earlier in Abidjan, said he had already confronted Trump in a phone call over what he called misleading narratives. 'I told him that what you are being told by those people who are opposed to transformation back in South Africa is not true,' he said. He further told reporters the Afrikaners 'do not fit the definition of a refugee.' The South African government has repeatedly denied that white citizens, including Afrikaners, are subject to state-backed persecution. Officials have accused the Trump administration of using racial tensions to justify what Pretoria views as an unjustified attack on its sovereignty and transformation agenda. More than 8,000 white South Africans are believed to have expressed interest in the US relocation scheme.

Statue of a Black woman in Times Square brings out the worst of the right-wingers on social media
A 12-foot-tall statue of a Black woman erected in Times Square meant to 'confront preconceived notions of identity and representation' has spurred vitriol from right-wing provocateurs. The bronze statue titled Grounded in the Stars, by artist Thomas J Price, was placed in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at the end of last month, much to the disappointment of many disgusting Internet trolls. While Price hoped the statue would 'instigate meaningful connections' and 'allow for deeper reflection around the human condition and greater cultural diversity,' the Internet decided to take the hateful route. 'How does this statue erected in Times Square 'confront perceived notions of identity and representation,' it's just some obnoxious looking overweight black woman, it's reinforcing those preconceived notions,'' X user @dsisme48 wrote. In a second post, the same user questioned, 'Is she someone famous or just a DEI project?' Many other posts about the statue have included much more vulgar and racist statements. The statue, which depicts a fictitious woman wearing a plain T-shirt and pants with braided hair and her hands on her hips, is meant to have 'familiar qualities' to the everyday woman, according to a description on the Times Square website. It was also intended to serve as a contrast to other sculptures, in particular two pedestaled monuments of white men situated nearby. Even so, people took strong issue with the art, making fun of both the woman's weight and the statue itself. Right-wing X account @EndWokeness shared several posts about the statue, garnering thousands of likes and hateful comments. 'Fat black women have somehow elevated themselves to the top of the pyramid,' X user @basedalright added. 'It is considered 'Cow Tipping' when and if someone knocks this over?' Facebook user Elijah Vincent commented under a photo of the statue. 'She looks like she [is] asking for the manager…' Facebook user Virginia Archer chimed in. 'Wondering where her food stamps at,' user Mind Matt commented. Facebook poster Thomas Kshetrimayum added: 'Is that like a warning to the young girls? Like, 'if you don't eat right, you are gonna become like that'' Grounded in the Stars is set to stand in the heart of Times Square until June 17.

Musk Leads MAGA Meltdown After Dem Demand for Mass Protests
Elon Musk led the MAGA clapback against J.B. Pritzker after he used a fiery speech to call for Democrats to take to the streets 'so that Republicans cannot know a moment of peace.' The Illinois governor issued the rallying cry at a dinner in New Hampshire Sunday evening packed with Democratic activists, officials, and donors. The New York Times reported that by the end of the 30-minute keynote, he 'had the room ready to storm the political barricades against President Trump.' 'It's time to fight everywhere and all at once. Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now. These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace,' he told the crowd, many of whom jumped to their feet in applause. The speech also caused a stir in MAGA quarters, with Donald Trump ally Musk leading the charge against his fellow billionaire. 'Crazy,' he said in response to the right-wing account 'End Wokeness,' which shared a clip of the speech on X. The profile, which has 3.6 million followers, is a leading voice against progressive politics on social media. Its post said Pritzker had called for supporters to 'unleash hell.' Right-wing political commentator and YouTuber Benny Johnson, who also has 3.6 million followers, said that Pritzker 'incites violence against Trump supporters by telling the left to take over the streets.' Conservative influencer Douglass Mackey, who was sentenced to jail for election interference in 2016, also had his say. Not to be outdone by Johnson, he said that 'Pritzker is essentially calling for civil war against MAGA.' 'Republicans should respond accordingly,' he added. Others cried foul about 'treason' and said that Pritzker was calling for an 'insurrection.' Pritzker's speech, at the New Hampshire Democratic Party's McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club Dinner, was also targeted at his own party, not just the GOP. The 60-year-old scion of the Hyatt hotel group referred to some of his colleagues as 'timid' in their approach to politics, and to Trump. 'Fellow Democrats, for far too long we've been guilty of listening to a bunch of do-nothing political types who would tell us that America's house is not on fire, even as the flames are licking their faces,' he said. 'Today, as the blaze reaches the rafters, the pundits and politicians—whose simpering timidity served as kindle for the arsonists—urge us now not to reach for a hose.' 'The reckoning is finally here,' he concluded. Pritzker, who is reportedly worth around $3.5 billion, has been tipped as a Democratic presidential candidate in 2028—which might explain his presence in New Hampshire. Firstly, though, he must prevail in a campaign next year to secure his third term as governor of Illinois.
