Actor Vinayakan's social media post draws criticism
Social media posts by actor Vinayakan have drawn sharp criticism from certain sections of society. Mr. Vinayakan had criticised filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan the other day for his statement made at the recently held film conclave organised by the State government. He had also dragged singer Yesudas into the controversy using an expletive-laden social media post. Muhammad Shiyas, Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) president, on Friday (August 8, 2025) termed him a public nuisance and sought government intervention to rein in the actor. The government shall either provide him with the required medical treatment or initiate legal action for the social menace caused by him. The protection given to the actor, who is known for his unruly and uncivilised behaviour, often under the influence of intoxicants, would send a wrong signal to society, he said. Mr. Shiyas said people will be forced to handle the actor on the streets if he fails to mend his ways. Playback singer G. Venugopal joined the issue on the day with a social media post criticising the actor for his below-the-belt criticism of Mr. Yesudas. Terming Mr. Yesudas as a revolutionary in the field of music, Mr. Venugopal said the legendary singer, who belonged to the Latin Catholic community, created history in the world of music, where Brahmanism once ruled the roost. The singer who devoted his life to music and engaged himself in reinventing and refining the music was showered with abuse under the cover of political correctness. One should treat Mr. Yesudas as a singer and not as a social reformer, referring to some of the controversial statements of the singer, Mr. Venugopal said. Meanwhile, Mr. Vinayakan took to social media once again on Friday with an abusive post on a woman media person. The actor's social media post following the death of veteran communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan and Congress leader Oommen Chandy had invited criticism.

Congress expels Thoppumpady division councillor
The Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) has expelled Sheeba Surom, the Congress councillor representing the Thoppumpady division, from the party. The letter issued by DCC president Mohammed Shiyas on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) cited 'anti-party activities' as the reason for her dismissal. Ms. Durom had been issued a notice in the past for not attending party functions and also acting against the interests of the party, it said. Ms. Durom, however, said that she had not received any official communication or even a call from the party leadership, and that she was unaware of her expulsion. M.G. Aristotle, UDF parliamentary leader in the Kochi Corporation, said that Ms. Durom was in the past suspended from the party for six months for not voting for the Congress candidate in the election to the education standing committee. Her vote was found invalid, which, he alleged, was part of a 'deal.' Mr. Aristotle said that she had repeatedly skipped meetings. 'At a time when the Congress is actively highlighting discrepancies in the draft voters' list, she is not following the party line and is working in favour of the CPI(M). The DCC president has clarified the situation through the dismissal to avoid the risk of the councillor approaching the public claiming to represent the party while acting at cross purposes, especially with the local body polls round the corner,' he added.

Governor's sanction required to take cognisance against CM: court
The prosecution sanction from the Governor is required for a court to take cognisance against the Chief Minister in an alleged offence of abetment, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam, has said. The court made the observation while considering a petition filed by Muhammad Shiyas, president of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee, seeking the registration of a case against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for abetment of violence. The judge noted that the complainant must obtain prosecution sanction from the Governor for the court to take cognisance of the alleged offence. In his complaint, Mr. Shiyas alleged that the Chief Minister abetted DFYI activists in unleashing violence against Congress and Youth Congress workers during the 'Navakerala Sadas' undertaken by the State Cabinet, which covered all 140 Assembly constituencies in the State. He pointed out that the Chief Minister had claimed the DFYI activists were carrying out a 'rescue mission' by removing Youth Congress workers protesting in front of the bus carrying him and his Cabinet colleagues. The statement of Mr. Vijayan amounted to abetment, he alleged. The court posted the case for November 1.

Governor's sanction required to prosecute CM in connection with Navakerala Sadas violence: court
A Kerala court on Thursday said sanction for prosecution from the Governor was required to register a case against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in connection with a conflict that occurred during the Navakerala Sadas, the State government's outreach programme. The court of Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate also observed that the Governor's sanction was required for prosecuting people's representatives. The observation came on a plea by Ernakulam District Congress Committee president Muhammed Shiyas seeking registering of a case against Mr. Vijayan in connection with the various instances of violence during the outreach programme in 2023. The court is scheduled to take up the matter next on November 1. Kerala Students Union and Youth Congress workers were allegedly assaulted by activists of the CPI(M)'s Democratic Youth Federation of India and the security personnel of the Chief Minister at various places across the State for showing black flags to Mr. Vijayan during the programme.
