Hull City Ladies co-owner accused of aggressive behaviour towards players

The co-owner of Hull City Ladies Daniel Johnson has been accused of multiple instances of aggressive behaviour that left players scared of him, and of making inappropriate comments about sex, according to written testimony seen by the Guardian. In early April a series of letters about Johnson's alleged conduct at the third-tier club, where he was the first-team manager before he became a director and co-owner, were sent to the Football Association as part of written evidence to support complaints about him. The letters were written by, among others, current and former players, club staff, volunteers and sponsors. The correspondence, some entitled letters of 'no confidence' in Johnson and one as a 'character reference', included claims that Johnson was verbally aggressive towards players on multiple occasions, and that he created a toxic environment where women felt intimidated. He kicked footballs at players in rage on more than one occasion, according to the letters. Johnson was also alleged to have made a reference, loudly in front of witnesses, to having allegedly slept with a player from the team. Johnson was contacted by the Guardian for a response. The letters submitted to the FA state that several players left because they did not wish to play under Johnson and a number of the squad say they will look for a new club if Johnson stays. A group of sponsors said they were withholding funding and would reconsider only if Johnson goes. The FA is understood to be in contact with Hull and offering advice on how the issues raised can be appropriately addressed by the club, although club sources have told the Guardian they are disappointed by the FA's level of involvement so far and are unhappy that Johnson has not been suspended by the FA pending an investigation. The Guardian revealed on 16 April that Johnson had submitted a request to the FA for the club to be relegated, amid allegations of mismanagement of the club's finances being made against him by his own players. Multiple club sources alleged that Johnson's relegation submission was an attempt at retaliation after several squad members criticised him in public social media posts. The FA is understood to have dismissed his request because it considers such requests for voluntary relegation only if submitted formally by clubs, not by an individual. Several club personnel are understood to have had a meeting to discuss the situation with the Emma Hardy, the MP for Hull West and Haltemprice, who is understood to have requested an urgent meeting with the FA. Players were said to have been in tears after Sunday's final fixture of the season, a 1-1 home draw with Rugby Borough. Hull finished eighth in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division. Johnson owns 50% of the shares in Hull City Ladies's parent company, HCLFC Limited. After the club received several letters of no confidence in Johnson's leadership as chair, an EGM was held at the club last week to vote in a new chair. Johnson did not attend and remains a director.

Hull City Ladies' future unclear amid club probe

Hull City Ladies played their final game of the season on Sunday, unsure what the future holds. The 1-1 home draw against Rugby Borough was secured against the backdrop of a police investigation into suspected financial fraud at the club. Humberside Police confirmed its economic crime unit was exploring several lines of inquiry after being contacted earlier this month. The Football Association is currently working with the club. Player Hope Knight, who has been with the team for three seasons, said: "At the team huddle [at half-time], the message was simple, 'this could be our last 45 minutes of Hull City', and it really does get to you." She added: "It's difficult because we give everything - blood sweat and tears to play for this club and we don't know what's happening next season. "We're fighting. We're fighting so hard to be here." Supporter Molly Oxley regularly attends the matches and is also worried about what the club could look like next season. She said: "I feel upset and frustrated as they've built up such a great team in the years that I've been watching them." The club was founded in 2001 and play their home games at Barton Town FC. They are not associated with Hull City AFC. Sunday's draw sealed an eighth-place finish in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division. Police are appealing for anyone who thinks they might have useful information to get in touch. Police investigating fraud at Hull City Ladies Hull City Ladies

Wolves players ‘absolutely devastated' club never applied for promotion

Photograph: Jack Thomas/WWFC/Wolves/Getty The Wolves women's players have said they feel let down by a lack of ambition from their club after learning an application for promotion to the Women's Championship was not submitted, despite the team battling Nottingham Forest for top spot all season. Wolves finished second in the northern section of the third tier in English women's football – the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division – on Sunday, three points behind Forest, who clinched promotion on the final day to go up to the second tier. Only one team could be promoted. Advertisement Wolves have met all the criteria to play second-tier football but it has emerged the club did not apply, and the players were informed of this during a team meeting on Sunday after full-time in their 6-0 home victory against Liverpool Feds, their final game of the season. Wolves did not wish to comment on the matter when contacted on Monday by the Guardian with a series of questions. Beth Merrick described the situation as 'crazy', before the midfielder said: 'Imagine fighting for promotion all season, to find out our Championship bid was never submitted. As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the club's ambitions for the women's team. For our staff to have to deliver this news to us moments after is astonishing. 'Our players, staff and fans deserve so much better. The staff have put in hours of dedication, for a bid to never be submitted. It's not about money, it's about honesty and transparency.' Advertisement Any third-tier clubs interested in applying for a second-tier licence, to be ready for promotion subject to their final league position, initially had until 20 December 2024 to express their intent to apply, before the formal deadline to submit a second-tier application, which was on 21 February. The list of criteria included a requirement to provide evidence a club could attract average home attendances of at least 600 spectators, while also requiring clubs to commit to appointing the following staff within one month of next season starting: a head of women's football, marketing manager, head coach, assistant coach, physiotherapist or sports therapist, doctor, a strength and conditioning coach, a goalkeeping coach and several people in specific safeguarding and player-welfare roles, as well as a matchday safety manager. It is also understood that the company running the Women's Championship, Women's Professional Leagues Limited, has proposed to raise the minimum contact hours per week for players up to 20 hours per week, although this proposal remains subject to receiving final shareholder approval. It is understood there was a shocked reaction in the dressing room on Sunday night among staff and players, many of whom are considering their futures at the club. Abbi Jenner, the defender who is on a season-long loan at Wolves from the Women's Championship side Birmingham City, wrote on X that the situation was 'absolutely gutting', accompanied by a broken heart emoji. The midfielder Lily Simkin wrote: 'We feel let down … We took it to the last day to find out it would have all been for nothing anyway. We deserve better.'
