Finn Bennett on ‘Seven Kingdoms,' Fashion and Working with Jodie Foster

CANNES, France – Finn Bennett made his first visit to Cannes to be honored by Chopard with this year's Trophée, awarded annually to emerging actors. 'I didn't really believe it at first,' he said of the initial call. 'I looked up the previous recipients and there are some really amazing people on there — not just well-known, but brilliant actors who do the kind of projects I want to do.' Henson Brightens the Cannes Red Carpet in Gold Giuseppe Zanotti Stilettos Some of those actors have been Gael Garcia Bernal, James McAvoy and Joe Alwyn, among others. The award has a strong track record of spotting talent. But it was Angelina Jolie that made the evening, serving as this year's godmother of the award. She presented Bennett with the award at a beachside ceremony at the Carlton Beach in Cannes. In his speech, he thanked his agent who had faith in him over a decade ago. 'I think one of the things I'm happiest about is that we can both look at this and be like, 'Wasn't all for nothing.' We're making progress,' he said. Having that support has been pivotal to his career. 'Your agent is reading all those scripts, selecting you for projects, fighting for you. Now that we've moved into more American projects, she's on the phone at midnight — I'm not. I just get to reap the rewards,' he joked. Some of those rewards are wearing Saint Laurent for the event, as well as on the famous Cannes red carpet. 'It was the first time I wore a real tux,' he said. 'I'd rented a cheap one before, but this was like, 'Wow, this is what it's meant to feel like,'' he said. Chopard also loaned a handmade, battery-free watch. 'I know nothing about watches, but I feel like I've learned so much.' He's not a quote-unquote fashion person by nature, but that is slowly changing after attending the McQueen Paris Fashion Week show last September. 'It was amazing — the drama, the solemnity. It was a real performance. So yeah, I'm getting more into it. I'd love to go to more shows.' The Trophée Chopard recognized his growing body of work, including 'Black Doves,' 'Warfare' and 'True Detective: Night Country' opposite Jodie Foster. The latter role is one of his personal highlights. 'That role could have just been a plot device,' he said. 'But [showrunner] Issa López gave him this massive journey. He really affected me.' Foster also gave him some of the best of advice of his career. When asking the Oscar winner for tips on preparation, such as if he should run lines during the weekend or do other immersive work, her answer threw him off guard. The advice? 'Go dancing,' he recalled. 'It was her way of saying: take the work seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously.' 'She's a masterclass — not just in acting, but in how to be a person. She's been famous since she was a child, and none of that has changed her. She's just a good, generous person.' She also advised him to keep a small, reliable team around him and not an entourage of yes-men. 'Stay grounded' was her overall message. Bennett is poised for fame with his next role in 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.' It's the next 'Game of Thrones' spinoff and set for a fall release. For the role, he got to live the life of a knight learning horseback riding and sword fighting. 'It's like being a child. Someone's saying, 'Come do these things,' and they're paying you to do it. It's amazing.' The actor was surprised by how heavy swords were, but perfected his moves. Horse riding was his favorite, and something that he will continue to pursue personally. Bennett's now-bigger breaks have come with new challenges. 'The pressure increases,' he said, comparing his earlier work in U.K.-based productions for British TV to the now-higher stakes of global platforms. 'You're working with more revered and recognizable people. It's not that you're scared of them, but you want to impress them. You want to do a good job,' he said. That internal pressure has made him more meticulous about his approach to roles. 'I hate using the word 'process,'' he joked, noting that preparation is key. 'For me, it starts with knowing my lines inside out. I have a memory like a sieve, so it takes time. Then I attach feeling to them and try different things out with a friend reading the other lines. I pick the best bits, go in, and do it.' While he describes himself as 'not an improv guy,' he says he's open to adapting. 'Different roles demand different things. Who knows? Maybe I'll go full method one day and live in the woods for six months.' Finn Bennett wore his first ever 'real tuxedo' to Cannes Film Festival

Finn Bennett had never worn a real tuxedo before Cannes Film Festival. The actor is being honoured by Chopard with this year's Trophée - which is awarded each year to emerging actors - and the rising star loved dressing up for the occasion, where Angelina Jolie presented him with the prize. He told Women's Wear Daily: "It was the first time I wore a real tux. "I'd rented a cheap one before, but this was like, 'Wow, this is what it's meant to feel like.' ' He was also loaned a handmade, battery-free watch from Chopard for the event, and he was happy to try something new. He quipped: 'I know nothing about watches, but I feel like I've learned so much.' Although he doesn't consider himself a fashionista by any stretch, he is "getting more into it" after he attended the McQueen Paris Fashion Week show in September 2024. He added: 'It was amazing — the drama, the solemnity. It was a real performance. So yeah, I'm getting more into it. I'd love to go to more shows.' With his Cannes award, Finn is following in the footsteps of the likes of Joe Alwyn and James McAvoy. Initially, he didn't "really believe" the call when he found out he was following in their footsteps. He said: 'I didn't really believe it at first. "I looked up the previous recipients and there are some really amazing people on there — not just well-known, but brilliant actors who do the kind of projects I want to do.' Finn - who has appearaed in the likes of 'Black Doves', 'True Detective: Night Country' and 'Warfare' - is thriving under the "pressure" of living up to his growing reputation. He explained: "You're working with more revered and recognisable people. "It's not that you're scared of them, but you want to impress them. You want to do a good job."

Angelina Jolie remembers Fatima Hassouna at Cannes

DUBAI: US actress and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie made a special appearance at the Cannes Film Festival to present the Trophee Chopard to rising stars Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ During the dinner ceremony, Jolie reflected on the power of international cinema to make an impact in times of global turmoil. 'I love international cinema,' Jolie told the star-studded assembly of guests. 'We are brought to other lands, into private moments, even on the battlefield, we connect and we empathize … anything that is possible to make international cinema more accessible is necessary and welcome.' 'And none of us are naive,' Jolie continued. 'We know that many artists around the world lack the freedom and security to tell their stories, and many have lost their lives like Fatima Hassouna, killed in Gaza, Shaden Gardood killed in Sudan, and Victoria Amelina killed in Ukraine, and so many other extraordinary artists who should be with us now. We owe all of those risking their lives and sharing their stories and experiences a debt of gratitude, because they have helped us to learn and to evolve.'

Angelina Jolie Delivers Humanitarian Message at Chopard Dinner in Front of Quentin Tarantino, Cannes Jury: 'None of Us Are Naive'

Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival, not with a film in the lineup but with official duties thanks to the festival's longtime (and glamorous) sponsor, Chopard. The Oscar winner agreed to serve as this year's Chopard Godmother, a gig that saw her preside over Friday night's A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach and present trophies to an actor and actress anointed as next generational talent by a jury comprised of previous recipients of the esteemed festival honor. This year's awards went to French actress Marie Colomb and breakout British star Finn Bennett, most recently seen in Alex Garland's Warfare and opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country. Cannes: 'The Creep' Remake Sells for U.K. (Exclusive) The honors were doled out during what is always a glitzy ceremony attended by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, members of the competition jury and A-list guests. Friday night was no different as this year's event hosted Quentin Tarantino (who was seated across from Jolie), Carla Bruni, and jury members Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong and president Juliette Binoche. The godmother always offers introductory remarks and Jolie maximized her time by professing a love for international cinema while staying true to her humanitarian activism and calling attention to tragic stories of women who lost their lives amid war and conflict abroad. 'I love international cinema. We are brought to other lands, into private moments, even on the battlefield, we connect and we empathize. I think of films like My Father Shadow, which is premiering here at Cannes. Anything that is possible to make international cinema more accessible is necessary and welcome,' said Jolie. 'And none of us are naive. We know that many artists around the world lack the freedom and security to tell their stories, and many have lost their lives, like Fatima Hassouna, killed in Gaza, Shaden Gardood killed in Sudan, and Victoria Amelina killed in Ukraine, and so many other extraordinary artists who should be with us now. We owe all of those risking their lives and sharing their stories and experiences a debt of gratitude, because they have helped us to learn and to evolve.' Jolie continued by saying that people convened in Cannes not just for glamour but connection. 'What brings us here is not carpets, even though they're lovely, but what brings us here is to connect to each other through international cinema and the opportunity to be with creative people,' she added. 'So I am very honored to be with so many brilliant global artists, including our honorees tonight, Finn Bennett and Mary Colon. You have both been acknowledged for the extraordinary versatility, authenticity, and empathy that you bring to your roles and as rising talents in global cinema. Thank you both for your contribution that you have already made to film and storytelling, and for everything that you will go on to do creatively.' In accepting, Bennett thanked his agent Bella Wingfield, 'whose belief in me really still confounds me,' his 'beautiful partner' Anna, and Jolie. 'I'm incredibly, incredibly honored to be presented this award by such a revered actor and filmmaker. But she's not only that, her work in humanitarian causes and ecological causes means she's someone who is and will always be on the right side of history.' Though the night was expected to close with a musical performance from actress, singer and former first lady of France, Carla Bruni. But due to noise from the venue next door, which was playing loud music amid a competing bar, Bruni bailed even after the musicians were assembled on stage. She later took to Instagram to slam the venue and thank Scheufele for the opportunity. 'When it came time to sing and when it came time to present the Chopard trophies, our neighbors decided to play music so deafening that we couldn't even hear the names of the winners. … We had prepared five or six songs for the guests. We were looking forward to playing this evening,' explained the wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy. 'We couldn't play because the Carlton Beach decided to have a party, with no respect for the artists next door, with no respect for the Chopard trophies. I would like to thank Caroline Scheufele and tell her that I will come and sing whenever she wants, for free. Thank you to the Carlton Beach for the awful racket you imposed on us.' Angelina Jolie honors young talent as Chopard Godmother at Cannes 2025

ALBAWABA - Angelina Jolie returns to Cannes, spotlighting rising talent and unity. Thanks to the festival's longstanding (and glitzy) sponsor, Chopard, Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival on official business rather than with a film on the schedule. The Oscar winner consented to be this year's Chopard Godmother, which entailed hosting the A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach on Friday night and awarding trophies to an actor and actress who were selected as the next generation of talent by a jury made up of past winners of the prestigious festival honor. French actress Marie Colomb and rising British star Finn Bennett, who most recently starred opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country and in Alex Garland's Warfare, were honored this year. The awards were given out during the usually glamorous ceremony, which was attended by A-list visitors, members of the competition jury, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, and general delegate Thierry Frémaux. Quentin Tarantino (sitting beside Jolie), Carla Bruni, Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and President Juliette Binoche were all present at this year's event, and Friday night was no exception. US actress, director Angelina Jolie (Photo by Valery HACHE / AFP) The godmother always makes opening statements, so Jolie made the most of her time by claiming to enjoy foreign films while adhering to her humanitarian work and drawing attention to the heartbreaking tales of women who died in foreign wars and conflicts. "I adore foreign films. Even on the battlefield, we connect and empathize when we are taken to different places and into private moments. My Father Shadow, which is having its Cannes premiere, comes to mind. Jolie stated, "Everything that can be done to increase accessibility to international film is essential and appreciated." Furthermore, none of us are gullible. We are aware that many artists around the world lack the security and freedom to share their stories, and many have died—such as Victoria Amelina in Ukraine, Shaden Gardood in Sudan, and Fatima Hassouna in Gaza—among the many remarkable artists who ought to be with us right now. We owe a debt of appreciation to everyone who has put their lives in danger to share their experiences and stories because they have enabled us to grow and learn. Jolie went on to add that connections, not simply glitz, were the reason people came to Cannes. "We are here to connect with each other through international cinema and the chance to be with creative people, not because of carpets, even though they are beautiful," she continued. Being with so many talented artists from around the world, including our awardees tonight, Finn Bennett and Mary Colon, is a great pleasure for me. As up-and-coming artists in international film, you have both received recognition for your exceptional adaptability, genuineness, and empathy. We are grateful for the contributions you have previously made to narrative and film, as well as for all of your future creative endeavors. TOPSHOT - US actress, director Angelina Jolie (Photo by Bertrand GUAY / AFP) Bennett thanked Jolie, his "beautiful partner" Anna, and his agency, Bella Wingfield, "whose belief in me really still confounds me," for their acceptance. It is indeed an honor for me to receive this award from such a renowned actor and director. She is also someone who is and will always be on the right side of history because of her efforts in ecological and humanitarian causes. However, it was anticipated that actress, singer, and former French first lady Carla Bruni would perform a song to cap off the evening. However, even after the musicians were gathered on stage, Bruni left because of the cacophony coming from the adjacent location, which was playing loud music in the middle of a rival bar. Later, she thanked Scheufele for the chance and criticized the location on Instagram.
