Angelina Jolie honors young talent as Chopard Godmother at Cannes 2025
Thanks to the festival's longstanding (and glitzy) sponsor, Chopard, Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival on official business rather than with a film on the schedule.
The Oscar winner consented to be this year's Chopard Godmother, which entailed hosting the A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach on Friday night and awarding trophies to an actor and actress who were selected as the next generation of talent by a jury made up of past winners of the prestigious festival honor. French actress Marie Colomb and rising British star Finn Bennett, who most recently starred opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country and in Alex Garland's Warfare, were honored this year.
The awards were given out during the usually glamorous ceremony, which was attended by A-list visitors, members of the competition jury, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, and general delegate Thierry Frémaux. Quentin Tarantino (sitting beside Jolie), Carla Bruni, Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and President Juliette Binoche were all present at this year's event, and Friday night was no exception.

The godmother always makes opening statements, so Jolie made the most of her time by claiming to enjoy foreign films while adhering to her humanitarian work and drawing attention to the heartbreaking tales of women who died in foreign wars and conflicts.
"I adore foreign films. Even on the battlefield, we connect and empathize when we are taken to different places and into private moments. My Father Shadow, which is having its Cannes premiere, comes to mind. Jolie stated, "Everything that can be done to increase accessibility to international film is essential and appreciated." Furthermore, none of us are gullible. We are aware that many artists around the world lack the security and freedom to share their stories, and many have died—such as Victoria Amelina in Ukraine, Shaden Gardood in Sudan, and Fatima Hassouna in Gaza—among the many remarkable artists who ought to be with us right now. We owe a debt of appreciation to everyone who has put their lives in danger to share their experiences and stories because they have enabled us to grow and learn.
Jolie went on to add that connections, not simply glitz, were the reason people came to Cannes. "We are here to connect with each other through international cinema and the chance to be with creative people, not because of carpets, even though they are beautiful," she continued. Being with so many talented artists from around the world, including our awardees tonight, Finn Bennett and Mary Colon, is a great pleasure for me. As up-and-coming artists in international film, you have both received recognition for your exceptional adaptability, genuineness, and empathy. We are grateful for the contributions you have previously made to narrative and film, as well as for all of your future creative endeavors.

Bennett thanked Jolie, his "beautiful partner" Anna, and his agency, Bella Wingfield, "whose belief in me really still confounds me," for their acceptance. It is indeed an honor for me to receive this award from such a renowned actor and director. She is also someone who is and will always be on the right side of history because of her efforts in ecological and humanitarian causes.
However, it was anticipated that actress, singer, and former French first lady Carla Bruni would perform a song to cap off the evening. However, even after the musicians were gathered on stage, Bruni left because of the cacophony coming from the adjacent location, which was playing loud music in the middle of a rival bar. Later, she thanked Scheufele for the chance and criticized the location on Instagram.

In the 1960s, Stamp was at the top of his game. He was praised for his good looks, fashion sense, and famous girlfriends, such as supermodel Jean Shrimpton and actress Julie Christie, whom he later appeared with in Far From the Madding Crowd. That he was dating Christie only lasted a year, but the Kinks made a song about them called Waterloo Sunset, and the line "Terry meets Julie" is thought to be a reference to them. Stamp was asked to take over for Sean Connery as James Bond when he quit, but he turned down the offer because of his extreme ideas about how he should play the part, according to director Harry Saltzman. "I believe my thoughts about the role intimidated Harry," he confided in me. "I didn't get a second call from him." He worked with directors Pier Paolo Pasolini and Federico Fellini while he was in Italy, but when he came back to London at the end of the 1960s, he found that his fame had faded. He later said on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, "When the 1960s ended, I think because I'd been so into it, I kind of ended as well." "I thought that everything would be fine if I were really pretty, successful, and well-known." I thought to myself, "It's been fun, but there hasn't been any real, deep internal satisfaction." After taking a break from acting for a while, he bought a ticket around the world and ended up in India, where he studied yoga and lived in a spiritual retreat. In 1976, he received his most renowned role as General Zod in Superman. The movie's director revealed last year that Stamp was interested in returning for a Priscilla sequel. Stamp, who was 85 years old at the time, was called the "fittest man I've ever met in my life" by Elliott. Stamp "has never drunk and basically eats grass." "He thought about it for a long time until he got there," he told The Guardian. "Then he told me, 'You know what? That's right. We're still not done. The story hasn't been told.'"

Jimmy Kimmel gains Italian citizenship amid Donald Trump war against liberal celebrities
ALBAWABA - Jimmy Kimmel secures Italian citizenship as Donald Trump's second term sparks unrest. Should Jimmy Kimmel leave the United States while Donald Trump is president? Maybe not, since he works on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," but by becoming an Italian citizen this year, he's giving himself a way out if he needs to. Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres left the United States last fall after Trump beat Kamala Harris in the race for president. A source told The Daily Beast that Kimmel said on "The Sarah Silverman Podcast" that he could do the same thing. Jimmy Kimmel, the comedian, revealed that he became an Italian citizen while talking about people leaving the country to get away from President Donald Trump. When Kimmel was a guest on Sarah Silverman's show on Friday, they talked about the state of the country during Trump's second term. Kimmel shared the news. "A lot of people I know are thinking about where they are going to get citizenship." Silverman said. "I did get Italian citizenship," Kimmel replied. "You do? Oh, that's amazing," Silverman reacted. "I do have that. And what's going on is—as bad as you thought it was going to be—it's so much worse. It's just unbelievable," Kimmel said. "I feel like it's even worse than he would like it to be," he said. Fox News Digital asked the White House for a response, but they didn't get back to us right away. During the 2024 election, the late-night star fought for Democrats. He or she has been a harsh critic of Trump for many years. Ansa, an Italian news service, says he first told people that he was Italian at an event in June at the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles. US President Joe Biden sits next to host Jimmy Kimmel (Photo by Jim WATSON / AFP) "Thanks to my beloved grandmother Edith, whose family came from Candida in the province of Avellino," he told the crowd at the event for the 79th Italian Republic Day, "I have just become a citizen." Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres said earlier this year that they were moving forever outside of the country after the 2024 election, which led to Kimmel's admission. Last week, Trump said that Kimmel's show would be the "next" to be canceled. This comes after Stephen Colbert, another anti-Trump late-night host, said in July that his show would end in May 2026.
