Kirk Herbstreit has high praise for one of Notre Dame's potential starting quarterbacks
While he's often impartial with Notre Dame, that doesn't seem to be the case with Kirk Herbstreit and one of the potential starting quarterbacks. In a post shared by FootballScoop's John Brice at the Personnel and Recruiting Symposium, the former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN analyst loves what he has seen from CJ Carr. Herbstreit said 'there's something about this CJ Carr. I'm super-high on him.' It's great that a national voice has high hopes for one of the potential starting quarterbacks, as Kenny Minchey is still battling Carr for the spot. It's pretty obvious from what we have seen that the second-year player has a much higher ceiling than his counterpart. Head coach Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock have both been non-committal to either one of them, as the competition continues on this fall. They'll eventually have to pick one, and if Herbstreit has his way, it will be Carr that gets the nod. HBCU coach resigns as season nears
A fledging HBCU program is likely looking for a new leader. Toriano Morgan has reportedly stepped down from his position as Edward Waters University head football coach, according to Football Scoop. A former FootballScoop Minority Rising Stars honoree, has served as the head coach at Edward Waters since 2021. In that time, he oversaw the program's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and helped establish the Tigers as a competitive HBCU football program within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). He led Edward Waters to its first winning season in nearly two decades with a 6-4 record in 2023, and he finished with an 18-24 overall mark and a winning record in SIAC play. While sources told FootballScoop that Morgan is stepping away for personal reasons, he is expected to return to the coaching ranks soon and has already emerged as a sought-after candidate. A Florida native with previous college experience at Virginia State and a background as a high school coach in Fort Lauderdale, Morgan has been recognized nationally-including a selection to the NFL Coaching Academy. His departure leaves a major void at Edward Waters, which had hoped to build on its recent momentum as a rising HBCU football program. For Morgan, the resignation marks the end of a transformative chapter that elevated both the team and the university within the broader world of Division II and HBCU football. As Edward Waters prepares for the 2025 season, the team will have to compete under a new leader. EWU will open the season against Savannah State on Aug. 30. Dave Peloquin, who's been with Notre Dame since the Bob Davie era, moves to Athletes First
Dave Peloquin, who has had a role in Notre Dame football since head coach Bob Davies tenure, is leaving the program to take a role with Athletes First as reported by John Brice of FootballScoop. While his work recently hasn't been specifically with the on-field portion of the football team, he was still part of the university's Name, Image, and Likeness department as the assistant athletic director for football strategic initiatives reported Eric Hanson in April of 2023. Athletes First already has a big influence on the NFL, as former Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton is on their roster. They also employ former head coach Brian Kelly, as they will now look to make a bigger impact within college football. You can most likely expect more than a few current and future Irish stars to join that team, as their relationships with Peloquin should give them a bit of an advantage with his new company. We wish Dave the best in his new role, especially considering he was a lifer inside Notre Dame football.

Saints hire another college coach, former NFL linebacker, to work with Brandon Staley's defense
The New Orleans Saints are hiring California Golden Bears defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon to come work as their new linebackers coach, per ESPN's Pete Thamel. He's another new arrival with few connections to the old Sean Payton-Dennis Allen regime, and will work as a position coach under defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Sirmon, 48, was a fourth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans back in 2000 and played for them until 2006. A former linebacker himself, he's continued to coach that position at a number of college stops over the years — he overlapped with Terry Joseph, the Saints' new defensive pass game coordinator, when they were both on staff with the Tennessee Volunteers in 2010 and 2011. He's been at Cal since 2018, though, and has worn a number of hats as an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, while coaching both inside and outside linebackers at different times. Back in 2019 he was recognized as the college Linebackers Coach of the Year by FootballScoop. Now he's turning pro.
