2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman Winner Ready To Head To Hollywood
WACO, TX (FOX 44) — 2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman contest winner Inez Russell is ready to head to Los Angeles to represent Central Texas and the Brazos Valley among the nation's other 124 contest winners! FOX 44's Vince Erickson had a conversation with Russell this week. She told him she's excited to fly out to Los Angeles on Sunday and spend a busy day there on Monday — with planned and surprise activities during the day and the awards banquet on Monday evening! 'Every day as this becomes real, I'm getting a lot of communication from Nexstar, and itineraries, and even emails from the other Remarkable Women across the country,' Russell said. 'And it's been fun to learn about them, and very humbling to think that I'm going to be part of all of this. 'I'm honored and humbled that I was chosen and I'm so grateful that I get to be part of this, and I think you guys do an amazing job of making us feel special. I'm happy to get to go but I feel blessed to get to be part of it.' Russell stressed she'll also be excited to tell her fellow Remarkable Women winners, who will also gather in Los Angeles, all about Friends For Life – Inez's Waco nonprofit that helps older and disabled adults live their best lives independently and safely – her motivation since founding the organization almost 36 years ago. 'The thing that touches my heart the most is we've been given a great opportunity to tell people about the people we serve and what we're trying to do to help them,' Russell said. 'And, I know the end result will be that more people will help us, which will mean we can help more people. We can help them in more ways, and that's the important thing.' WACO, TX (FOX 44) — The founder and executive director of a Waco nonprofit is our Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year! Inez Russell started Friends For Life, a nonprofit that helps older and disabled adults live their best lives independently and safely. She started the charity in September of 1989. Since then, Friends For Life has expanded to 82 Central Texas counties. On April 1, FOX 44 showed you the exact moment Inez learned she had won the 2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year award — as well as her reaction, and several close friends' reactions, as well as the FOX 44 family's reaction. We also caught up with Inez and Christine Smith, the woman who nominated Inez, for a conversation about being the winner of the 2025 contest. 'I'm just really stunned. And now that has had a few moments to sink in,' Inez said. 'Well, I'm a really very grateful. I don't feel like I deserve it. I think everything that's happened, Friends for Life was God. And I've been blessed to get to follow Him and do what I feel He's called me to do.'Christine Smith told FOX 44 she moved across the nation to volunteer for Inez and Friends for Life, and jumped at the chance to nominate Inez to be the 2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year. 'I am so grateful that I heard about it when I did that. I could finish it in such a short amount of time, because it just poured out,' Christine said. 'I knew that I was feeling drawn to move to Waco, and I already had a history with elderly, with people with challenges and coming alongside them. And I met a lady who was bringing in coffee and kolaches. Turned out she was the keynote speaker, as well. I reached over to my husband and I said, 'Now I know the reason why I'm moving to Waco so that I get to volunteer with her organization.' She was she was the reason. Friends for Life was the reason.' Part of winning the Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year is a $1,000 donation from the Nexstar Charitable Foundation for the nonprofit of her choice. She's also eligible for the National Woman of the Year, and will travel to Hollywood as well – where she'll be among other Nexstar station's Remarkable Women winners. The National Woman of the Year will be revealed on April 14. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Houston no-kill animal shelter victim of a crime that was caught on camera
The Brief A Houston no-kill shelter has become the victim of a crime after a man stole items. The shelter, Friends for Life Animal Shelter, has been helping save the lives of thousands of dogs and cats for 23 years. Houston police are searching for the suspect involved. The shelter is seeking assistance through donations, volunteering, and fostering. HOUSTON - For 23 years, Friends for Life Animal Shelter has helped save the lives of thousands of dogs and cats. Now, it's the shelter that needs a helping hand. What we know "He kind of destroyed our trust in people, which is really a sad thing," said Fiona Layfield, Friends for Life Managing Director. The shelter is hoping donors can help them recover from an unwanted visit from the suspect. A camera captures him making a beeline for an exterior office. "He broke through one of the windows to see what he could find that would be quick and easy to sell. He kicks down the door from the inside, and he stole a laptop, a mini fridge, some tools," Layfield said. "As a nonprofit, we are always struggling for money and to have to spend money on extra security, fixing doors, and replacing equipment. It breaks my heart because we want all the money we have that we get from donors to go towards the animals." What they're saying "I would just ask him was it really worth it," said Layfield. "He's probably going to sell the items on the street for a fraction of what they're worth, but he's destroyed some of our trust in humanity. He's broken so many hearts, was it really worth it?" If you know who the suspect is, contact Houston police at (713) 884-3131. What you can do Donors are helping Friends For Life replace some of the stolen items.
