'I watched my kids go flying in fairground horror as ride came off the track'

The heart-stopping moment a fairground ride car 'smashed about before coming off the track' at a festival in Edinburgh was captured in footage - children on the ride were 'shaken' A terrifying moment unfolded at the Galactic Carnival Festival in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, when a waltzer ride malfunctioned and went "flying" with children still inside. The frightening incident, which was caught on video, left children "shaken up" after the ride appeared to suddenly derail. Kevin McNulty, a father of three, was on the ride behind his children - aged 13, 12, and seven - when the ride unexpectedly came off and flew toward his seat. Kevin, who was also with his partner, Brooke, described the moment as something "you'd see in the movies." The incident took place around 7pm on Sunday night. ‌ While his children were understandably shaken, Kevin said they were "not too bad" considering the severity of what happened. ‌ Kevin told EdinburghLive: "Last night we were at these shows at Westerhailes Plaza, my three kids were on the Waltzers with myself and Brooke in car behind. Then the unthinkable happened. Going FULL PELT (not slowing down) their car came completely off and then went flying into our car. 'It then smashed about the place crashing into the side off the track, thankfully there was a heavy large speaker that they collided with or they would have been through the whole thing and then the ending would have been a completely different story (a thought I can't stop thinking about). "The shows continued to go (not the Waltzers) but place should have been shut down for a full inspection. It was like something you see in the movies and my kids are very very lucky that they managed to get out of this still walking." Kevin and his family claim they were then offered a refund before he took the children to A&E. ‌ He continued: "They said they would take our wristbands off and said, 'do you want a refund?' I thought, 'Yeah, of course.' "We just wanted out. We didn't want to be there after what happened." It comes after an incident in India in March left two students injured when a funfair ride malfunctioned in mid-air. The horror moment at the MGM Amusement Park in Chennai saw a swinging boat ride careen several feet into the air when a large metal rod suddenly detached and landed on the two riders. ‌ The college students were on a trip to the park when disaster struck. The second victim was also injured but was later described as being in stable condition. After the accident, Kanathur police registered a case against the amusement park, while three staff members linked to the ride's operation were arrested. Safety inspections on all the other rides at the park were carried out, authorities said, while the boat swing ride was shut down. A similar incident in India in December last year left a 13-year-old girl dangling 60 feet in the area after she fell out of a Ferris wheel pod. She continued to hold one of the bars tightly while dangling from the rotating structure. Once the ride reached its lowest point, a worker was able to walk over to the girl and help her off.

The moment funfair ride comes off the track with children on board

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Families were left shocked after a carnival ride suddenly crashed at an Edinburgh fair. A dad-of-three said his kids are 'very lucky' to have walked out of the Waltzers funfair ride after it appeared to malfunction at the Galactic Carnival Festival in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, last night. Kevin McNulty said he was on the ride with his three children and partner when the 'unthinkable happened.' The car came 'completely off' when the ride was going at 'full pelt' as the kids were enjoying the day out in one car and Kevin and his partner rode in another behind them. On footage captured by the dad-of-three, fairgoers can be first heard laughing and whooping in excitement as the ride spins around. However, the sounds turn into terrified screams when some of the cars crash off the spinning platform and onto the side. A panicked child can be heard yelling 'oh my God, oh my God,' with crying in the background. Kevin wrote on social media how the 'car came completely off and then went flying into our car and then smashed about the place crashing into the side off the track.' He said hurtling cars were 'thankfully' blocked by heavy large speaker 'that they collided with or they would have been through the whole thing and then the ending would have been a completely different story.' Kevin said he 'can't stop thinking about' what could have happened if the equipment had not been there. Pictures he took appear to show nuts and bolts on the floor near the ride in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Kevin claimed that when a male manager arrived, he told the workers to 'get the bolts off the ground before they get pictures,' accusing him of not giving 'a single care' about his children. He said his children are 'very lucky that they managed to get out of this still walking.' Other rides then continued, but the Waltzers was stopped, he said. However, he said he thinks the fair 'should have been shut down for a full inspection.' More Trending Hundreds of people commented after Kevin shared the experience on social media. One person said: 'Horrendous and could have so easily been a different outcome! Shocking.' Another said: 'Thats horrendous hope they are all ok.' More info A dad who brought his family to a fairground in Edinburgh has spoken of his horror after he watched his children 'fly completely off' a ride. Kevin McNulty, his partner Brooke, and their three children were at Galactic Carnival Festival in Wester Hailes on Saturday night. At around 7pm, the family went on the Waltzers - with the kids in one car and Kevin and Brooke just behind them. In a horrifying clip taken by one of the children, the ride went wrong and they were 'thrown off'. Kevin said that the car collided with a large speaker, and things 'might have been a different story' if it hadn't. According to the family, the Waltzers were stopped though the rest of the rides continued on. Kevin believes the fairground should have been shut down for an investigation, adding: "My kids are very very lucky that they managed to get out of this still walking." Speaking with Edinburgh Live, Kevin said: "They're very shaken up and a bit sore. They're quite shocked after what's just happened, but apart from that they're actually not too bad. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox "It was all quite crazy. The security guards came out quickly and said the manager would be down. There was no 'I'll go get him'. "The manager never really spoke to us, he was more concerned about the nuts and bolts lying on the ground. I heard him say to his staff, 'get them off the ground before they take pictures'. "They ushered us away, saying they would walk us up to the main office. (Image: Kevin McNulty) "My daughter heard somebody say, oh, give them an ice pack. Then he came back and I was like, where's the ice pack? "They said 'oh we didn't have an ice pack'. We walked up to the main reception and a woman came out who was then apparently the manager." Kevin and his family claim they were then offered a refund, before he took the children to A&E. He continued: "They said they would take our wristbands off and said 'do you want a refund'. I thought, yeah, of course. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. "We just wanted out. We didn't want to be there after what happened. "We took the kids to A&E to get them checked for. "The fact that they just kept running as if nothing had happened is pretty shocking. They tried to clean up the nuts and bolts mess, and tried to clean up all the evidence, by the time the police got there but we had already taken pictures and we had the video." The organisers of Galactic Carnival Festival have been approached for comment.
