Will Microsoft finally give PC gamers the one series they should already have?
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Xbox Gears of War is finally coming to PlayStation! At least that's what most folks are excited about in the latest Xbox announcement. I'm more excited that this version of the game, Gears of War: Reloaded, is coming to PC and delivering native 4K assets and zero loading screens. But I'm also annoyed. You see, we had Gears of War on PC a year after the Xbox 360 launch, and then we got the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on PC after that, and now we're getting yet another remaster of the same game via Gears of War: Reloaded. But tell me, what happens when you beat this new Gears of War game? I'm sure you'd want to play Gears of War 2 and then Gears of War 3. Well, guess what? Neither of those games ever made it to PC or literally any other platform. PC gamers got absolutely no love for the past 17 years, and Microsoft did that to its second biggest game franchise. But before I give myself a hernia, let's talk about what Gears of War: Reloaded brings to the table, and what that could mean for the franchise looking ahead. Gears of War: Reloaded, again Credit: Xbox So Microsoft finally brought Gears of War to the PlayStation. Why now? Well, Xbox did announce Gears of War: E-Day last year, which takes place 14 years before the original game. Gears of War: Reloaded is a great way to introduce people to the franchise and prepare them for the upcoming game, since they're directly tied. Unfortunately, Gears of War: E-Day's launch on PlayStation hasn't been announced, but I imagine if Reloaded does well on the PS5, then Xbox will make that effort. But before I go any further, let's jump into what awaits in Gears of War: Reloaded. Officially announced on the Xbox blog , Gears of War: Reloaded will support HDR and Dolby Vision, which'll enhance the overall color and contrast. Then there's Dolby Atmos surround sound that'll improve the soundstage. Variable refresh rate and super resolution with improved anti-aliasing will make the visuals look smoother and sharper. Then there's the actual art of the game. Xbox is delivering 4K assets and remastered textures, enhanced post-processing visual effects (color grading, motion blur, bloom, etc.), and improved shadows and reflections. And then there's the greatest quality of life update — no loading screens. Despite being bitter about the forgotten Gears titles, I'm excited for folks to experience the introduction to one of my favorite franchises. The best part is that Gears of War: Reloaded offers cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms — all games should be like this. I hope this means that Xbox will finally take steps toward remastering Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. The only way to play those games currently is if you own an Xbox console. Ugh. Gears of War: Reloaded is set to launch on August 26, 2025, for $39. It'll arrive on day one with Game Pass, and those that already own Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will receive a free upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded.

Gears Of War: Reloaded confirmed for PS5 but fans are divided over one thing
The game, originally released in 2006, has gone multiplatform and multiplayer with a "remaster from the ground up" A much anticipated video game will be landing on PlayStation 5, but despite exciting new features that allow multiple people to get involved on multiple platforms, the drop has left many fans divided over what is yet another remake. Gears of War: Reloaded will be released this summer in honour of the 20th anniversary of "the game that started it all" - Gears of War - which comes next year in 2026. Hailed as "a celebration of one of gaming's most iconic franchises," the game will be multiplayer and multiplatform, promising to deliver "the most complete version of the original game to date". With the original game released in 2006, Gears of War: Reloaded introduces the franchise to a new generation of players. However, some gaming enthusiasts have been left frustrated and not hugely impressed by the remake element. Many took to X, previously Twitter, to express their annoyance. One wrote: "Is any company capable of making a new game or IP??? I am SO SICK of remakes. "This is the SECOND remake of the same game now. Why not do 2 or 3? You could have ported the original REMAKE to PS5. "Coalition really needs to get their priorities straight. I'm calling it right now, they are gonna remake two and three later down the line and charge you $40 for each of those games also. So that with Gears 6 will be $200 total. And Gears 6 surely will be riddled with micro transactions." Another said: "Gears of War on PlayStation… I guess Halo is up next soon, strange era of gaming we are in." A third chimed in :"Another remaster? Was expecting a complete remake from the ground up". A fourth wrote: "This is just the 1st game remastered yet again? Or the original trilogy?" A fifth wondered: "Is this just a remaster of the first game..." Others didn't share in the rage, though, and were thrilled by the details. "This is awesome," one enthused, while another simply commented: "Let's go!" Microsoft unveiled a remaster of the original Gears of War game from the Xbox 360 in what has been dubbed one of the platform's most important exclusives. The game will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Rumours suggested that all three initial games would be getting a remaster but there's no sign of the other two yet, although Microsoft is already hinting at further releases, or game announcements, for the series' 20th anniversary. Reloaded doesn't have a reveal trailer as of yet, with the news only being announced on Xbox Wire at 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday (May 5). The game will feature support for 120 fps and 4K resolution, with cross-progression and cross-play on all formats and extensive new multiplayer options. Reloaded will include split-screen and online options for two-players with eight-player PvP also available. The remaster also includes new HDR, Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos, and 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio options. Plus, the promise of zero loading screens, improved shadows and reflections (but no specific mention of ray-tracing), and 4K assets and remastered textures. It'll include all the content ever released for the game, including previous remaster Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition, with all DLC, maps, modes, bonuses. A "full roster of classic characters and cosmetics" is promised as unlockables. The remaster is set to cost £39.999 in the UK and will launch on August 26, 2025. There'll be no additional charge to play it via Game Pass, but it's also a free upgrade for anyone that already owns Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, in other words, if you bought a digital version before 5pm BST on May 5. "No matter where you play, Reloaded has been re-engineered to look and feel incredible," Xbox added. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!

'Gears of War: Reloaded' Remaster Goes Multi-Platform, Debuts On PlayStation In Aug
Microsoft has announced Gears of War: Reloaded , a remaster of the original 2006 cover shooter by The Coalition in partnership with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief, bringing not only enhanced visuals and all the DLC from the original game, but also marking the title's debut on PlayStation when it launches on 26 August this year. The original game had already seen a previous remastering effort in 2015 in the form of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition , but this latest edition promises to take its visuals one step further, with its announcement post listing a host of graphical improvements such as 4K resolution, 4K assets and remastered textures, improved shadows and reflections, super resolution with improved anti-aliasing, alongside both High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. 'As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we're reflecting on what this franchise means,' wrote The Coalition studio head Mike Crump. 'It's about the stories we've told, the friendships we've built, and the unforgettable moments we've shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded , we're opening that door to more players than ever.' Marking the first time the title has launched on a PlayStation platform, Gears of War: Reloaded will also support cross-play across all platforms. ' Gears of War: Reloaded is built for shared play — whether you're teaming up in split-screen or jumping online.' Crump added, 'The Campaign supports two-player co-op, and Versus Multiplayer allows up to 8 players. With cross-play across all platforms, you and your friends can squad up no matter where you play — no Microsoft account required.' However, it was clarified that signing into the game with a Microsoft account would unlock 'full cross-platform functionality', specifically enabling cross-progression to save both campaign and multiplayer progress across devices, and the ability to send invites to friends across platforms. In addition, Gears of War: Reloaded will be a free upgrade for players who purchased the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition prior to the announcement, with a game code delivered directly to those eligible via a direct message on their Xbox accounts in the days leading up to its launch. Gears of War: Reloaded will launch on 26 August 2025 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a day one release on Game Pass. The company added: 'Players will gain immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost — this includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression.' Gears of War: Reloaded – What's new The remaster has been re-engineered to provide a visually immersive and seamless experience across platforms. The game supports 4K resolution at 60 FPS in Campaign mode, and up to 120 FPS in Multiplayer. Visual upgrades include High Dynamic Range (HDR), Dolby Vision, remastered 4K textures, improved shadows and reflections, and enhanced post-processing effects. The game also features super-resolution with improved anti-aliasing, and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for smoother gameplay. The audio experience is enhanced through 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and 3D Spatial Audio. Xbox also highlighted the presence of zero loading screens in Campaign mode, contributing to uninterrupted gameplay. Gears of War: Reloaded – Plot summary Set on the war-torn planet of Sera, the story unfolds after the discovery of Imulsion, a powerful energy source that triggered economic turmoil and a global conflict known as the Pendulum Wars, which lasted 79 years. Amid this unrest, the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG), a once-obscure political philosophy, gained influence. Its military unit, the "Gears," rose to prominence after Emergence Day (E-Day), when a subterranean species called the Locust launched a devastating assault on humanity. Following the chaos of E-Day, the COG imposed martial law and led the resistance. One year later, in a desperate move, it deployed the Hammer of Dawn—a satellite-powered weapon—on its own cities to halt the Locust advance. Survivors were evacuated to the Jacinto Plateau, the only region immune to Locust tunnelling.
