Will Microsoft finally give PC gamers the one series they should already have?

Gears of War is finally coming to PlayStation!
At least that's what most folks are excited about in the latest Xbox announcement. I'm more excited that this version of the game, Gears of War: Reloaded, is coming to PC and delivering native 4K assets and zero loading screens. But I'm also annoyed.
You see, we had Gears of War on PC a year after the Xbox 360 launch, and then we got the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on PC after that, and now we're getting yet another remaster of the same game via Gears of War: Reloaded.
But tell me, what happens when you beat this new Gears of War game? I'm sure you'd want to play Gears of War 2 and then Gears of War 3. Well, guess what? Neither of those games ever made it to PC or literally any other platform. PC gamers got absolutely no love for the past 17 years, and Microsoft did that to its second biggest game franchise.
But before I give myself a hernia, let's talk about what Gears of War: Reloaded brings to the table, and what that could mean for the franchise looking ahead.
Gears of War: Reloaded, again

So Microsoft finally brought Gears of War to the PlayStation. Why now? Well, Xbox did announce Gears of War: E-Day last year, which takes place 14 years before the original game. Gears of War: Reloaded is a great way to introduce people to the franchise and prepare them for the upcoming game, since they're directly tied.
Unfortunately, Gears of War: E-Day's launch on PlayStation hasn't been announced, but I imagine if Reloaded does well on the PS5, then Xbox will make that effort. But before I go any further, let's jump into what awaits in Gears of War: Reloaded.
Officially announced on the Xbox blog , Gears of War: Reloaded will support HDR and Dolby Vision, which'll enhance the overall color and contrast. Then there's Dolby Atmos surround sound that'll improve the soundstage. Variable refresh rate and super resolution with improved anti-aliasing will make the visuals look smoother and sharper.
Then there's the actual art of the game. Xbox is delivering 4K assets and remastered textures, enhanced post-processing visual effects (color grading, motion blur, bloom, etc.), and improved shadows and reflections. And then there's the greatest quality of life update — no loading screens.
Despite being bitter about the forgotten Gears titles, I'm excited for folks to experience the introduction to one of my favorite franchises. The best part is that Gears of War: Reloaded offers cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms — all games should be like this.
I hope this means that Xbox will finally take steps toward remastering Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. The only way to play those games currently is if you own an Xbox console. Ugh.
Gears of War: Reloaded is set to launch on August 26, 2025, for $39. It'll arrive on day one with Game Pass, and those that already own Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will receive a free upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded.

Gemini is starting to look very different on your Android phone

The company's portal into the world of AI, Gemini is working its way into all facets of the Googleverse. The latest twist in the Gemini tale sees a redesign on Android. Gemini on Android has replaced Google Assistant, being the port of call for all those questions and queries that you have. Tapping into all the information that has been assimilated online, Gemini is basically replacing "Googling", as you barely have to search for anything, because Gemini has the answer for you. But how you access Gemini seems to be where Google is putting its efforts. Gemini started out as a grey box with a scalloped circle (as seen above), but then moved to a rectangle with rounded corners, rimmed with a four-colour glow, just so you know that it's Google providing you with that service. While the latest change doesn't seem huge, a slightly different Gemini call-up has been spotted by 9to5Google. That squared box looks like it might be replaced by a pill-shaped device, rounding the corners, but still offering the same options. It's a tweak to the visual appearance of Gemini on the home screen, launching out of the bottom of the screen and expanding from a circle, while the current version just seems to rise from the bottom of the screen. The new animation is certainly more sophisticated and I suspect that this redesign is partly to fit with Google's incoming Material 3 Expressive design. How do I access Gemini on Android phones? Accessing Gemini on Android is possible via a number of different means. There's the option for a diagonal swipe from the bottom corner to have Gemini wake up and appear at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively, you can use the old "Hey Google" hotword to trigger a response. Finally, some devices assign Gemini to a hardware button. Often, press and hold on the power button on an Android phone will launch Gemini, although I tend to switch that back to being the power control because it's so much easier when you want to restart your phone. Whichever method you use to access Gemini, it's listening when it opens, so you can just talk, or you can type into the box if you want a silent response. This is separate to the Gemini Live experience which takes over the whole screen. However, while I'm using regular Gemini all the time, Gemini Live really doesn't fulfil a purpose for me, so I use it a lot less often. There are new features coming to Gemini Live, however, so that might change in the future. There's no word on when this Gemini design change might come to devices.

U.S. authorities allegedly placed secret tracking devices in AI chip shipments to China — report claims targeted shipments from Dell and Super Micro containing Nvidia and AMD chips had trackers in packaging and servers themselves

The Federal government is allegedly placing hidden location trackers in some AI chip servers that are suspected of being at risk of diversion to China. Reuters reported that anonymous sources confirmed that U.S. authorities are employing this tactic as part of their investigation into the alleged smuggling of banned AI chips into China. According to the report, the alleged tracking doesn't impact all shipments, but only "targeted" shipments believed to be at a high risk of being diverted to China. Despite the affordability and ubiquity of trackers, it will be prohibitively expensive to place several in all servers that are going through customs. It's more likely that the authorities are allegedly doing this to aid in a specific investigation. Although placing a tracker on a package typically requires a court order, Reuters notes that export enforcement agents may sometimes do so with administrative approval only. It's unclear when this alleged practice started for semiconductors, but those involved in the AI chip supply chain seem aware of these actions. These trackers are reportedly often added to the shipping containers, the packaging of individual servers, or even within the server racks themselves. The report cites individuals who claim that they had seen images and videos of trackers being removed from Dell and Super Micro servers, some of them as large as smartphones. Smugglers also apparently know this, with court documents in a recent case of smuggling millions of dollars' worth of chips to China revealing that a suspect instructed their co-conspirators to 'pay attention to see if there is a tracker on it.' Tom's Hardware reached out to Nvidia directly about this, but the company declined to comment on the issue. The U.S. Department of Commerce, Homeland Security, and the FBI also didn't issue a statement when asked by Reuters, although the sources confirm that these agencies are typically involved in these situations. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has consistently denied that the company's most advanced AI chips are being diverted to China. However, multiple outlets confirm that there's a strong black market for these cutting-edge silicon, with a reported billion dollars' worth of Nvidia products being openly traded into the East Asian country in just the last quarter. Washington is trying to hamper China's progress in AI, especially as it's considered a 'dual-use technology' that is applicable in both civilian and military purposes. Because of this, the White House — across multiple administrations — has applied export controls on state-of-the-art semiconductors, including the most powerful AI chips from Nvidia and AMD. However, Huang has said that the U.S. export control was a failure, with the former U.S. Commerce Secretary also saying that holding back China's chipmaking progress is a fool's errand. Despite that, the Trump administration has doubled down on its efforts to control the flow of AI chips into China, even going as far as banning both the Nvidia H20 and the AMD MI308 in April 2025 — AI chips that have been especially designed to comply with the initial set of export controls released by the Federal government. The U.S. has since backed down on this particular export control and has reopened the taps for these AI chips; the newer, more powerful variants of these semiconductors still aren't allowed to be shipped to China. In the most recent twist in the saga, AMD and Nvidia have struck a deal to share 15% of related sales revenue with the government in exchange for export licenses for its H20 and MI308, an unprecedented arrangement. The U.S. has been clamping down on the alleged smuggling of high-end semiconductors. American allies such as Singapore are taking action to stop the flow of these AI chips through their borders. Furthermore, a bill has been filed in Congress to force American AI chip makers to add geo-tracking technology into their products. Nvidia is against this, though, saying that these 'permanent flaws' would make their devices vulnerable to hackers. These developments have nonetheless led the Chinese government to question the integrity of the company's chips and have even discouraged their use. ‘R-Type Delta HD Boosted' Comes Westward This November
Following the news that the classic shmup R-Type Delta was getting an HD remaster, we now know that the game will come Westward this November. Called R-Type Delta HD Boosted, it has all the modern features for classic retro shmups, and looks really rather lovely with it. When Delta was originally released on the PlayStation in 1998, it was a big departure for the series. Not only were the visuals in 3D, but you also had multiple ships to choose from. While the new trailer for the game (shown below) lists three playable ships: the R-9A2, RX-10, and R-13A, you can also pilot the Pow Armor once certain conditions are met. My only gripe with this release is that there will also be, hopefully optional, arranged musical tracks included. This does feel entirely unnecessary, as the music for Delta was already thoroughly excellent and was in no need of updating. All that aside, it's also worth saying that for many fans of R-Type, Delta is often regarded as being the best game in the series. It certainly has ingenious level design, which is a series hallmark, but it also blends 2D and 3D really cleverly. In any case, R-Type Delta is getting re-released on modern consoles and will be widely available again, and that makes me very happy indeed. R-Type Delta HD Boosted will be released on November 20 for Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
