NH Heroes: Brady Procon stopped a runaway boat from plowing into sailing students

Navy Seaman Recruit Brady Procon was 17 last July 4 weekend, when a crisis erupted in a quiet cove of Lake Winnipesaukee. On Wednesday, the New Hampshire Union Leader will honor him as a New Hampshire Hero of 2024. Hero Awards logo NH Heroes: Manchester firefighters were rescuers in storm-ravaged N.C. When the Swiftwater Rescue Team from the Manchester Fire Department arrived in Boone, North Carolina, during Hurricane Helene last September, they knew their skills would be tested. Procon and friends were cooking hot dogs and hamburgers, talking and laughing on a Saturday afternoon when a loud motor boat roared into peaceful Smith Cove in Gilford, where his father, Jeremy Procon, owns vacation property. 'We heard the sound of a roaring boat engine, which was super out of place because it's a no-wake zone. There usually isn't any loud noise or chaos,' Procon said Monday by phone from Navy boot camp. He saw an out-of-control boat with no one aboard — 'a danger to everyone who was around the water.' People were screaming. 'It unfolded before my eyes. My dad said, 'There's nobody on that boat.'' The operator of a sailing school motor boat had fallen out of the boat, which was careening toward sailing students in their sailboats. Procon's father jumped in his own boat to get kids out of the water. Procon climbed aboard a neighbor's personal watercraft. The neighbor drove his craft as close to the boat as he could get, Procon said, but someone had to jump onto the boat, which he estimates was going 15 to 20 mph. 'He looked at me like I was crazy. We circled once, then got close and I jumped on.' His ribs struck the center console. 'I grabbled the steering and turned the throttle way down' to get it away from the dock and the youngsters sailing. 'When I got it, I was shaking. People were clapping a lot. My ribs hurt. I hit that boat pretty hard,' Procon said. 'My friends at the dock said, 'What did you just do?' 'I don't even know,' I said.' 'It was just so random, out of the blue, just another Saturday. The summer before was the first time I drove a jet ski,' he said. 'At first, it was tunnel vision. I saw that boat and wanted to stop it.' Procon, an avid dirt bike rider and power sports fan, said his goal in the Navy is 'to find a good career for myself. I've always loved the military and the Navy. The movie 'Top Gun.' The discipline and the traditional aspect. The uniform looks good. So far, it's the people. The people in the Navy are awesome. I've met some friends for life.' 'Brady's a pretty courageous kid, pretty athletic as well,' said his father, Jeremy. 'There had to be 15 little sailboats out there that day. We ran out to get the kids out of the situation.' It was Brady's idea to stop the motorboat, his father said. 'He's always the first to jump off a boat, the first to jump in the river, the first to do a back flip. He's a go-getter. He lives life on the edge.' 'In hindsight, I would have just cleared the people out of the way. He was focused on stopping the boat itself.' rbaker@

'Friday Night Lights 'Star Zach Gilford Files for Divorce from Kiele Sanchez After 12 Years of Marriage: Report

Zach Gilford and wife Kiele Sanchez are reportedly separating after 12 years of marriage. The Friday Night Lights actor, 43, filed for divorce from the Lost alum, 47, on Friday, April 18, according to legal documents obtained by TMZ. Gilford cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the longtime couple's split, and did not specify a date of separation, per TMZ. The outlet also reported that the Gilford is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple's two kids — Zeppelin, 7, and Revel, 4 — and checked a box to award his estranged wife spousal support. Representatives for Gilford and Sanchez did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Saturday, April 19. More recently, Sanchez portrayed Gilford's on-screen wife in a recurring role in 2022's Criminal Minds: Evolution, in which he played serial killer Elias Voit. The actors are quite private about their personal life, though Gilford occasionally shared glimpses into their time as both an on-screen and off-screen couple on Instagram. Sanchez's Instagram account, meanwhile, is private. "Fun times with my fake family (real wife, fake kids),' Gilford captioned a selfie of the pair with the actors who portrayed their on-screen children in 2022. The same year, the couple celebrated a decade of marriage with an anniversary trip, which Gilford also documented on Instagram, writing, 'Thank you to @sanchomonsto for 10 years of 'sexy-tinis.' " The actor also shared a photo of the couple kissing to commemorate his 41st birthday in January 2023. Gilford and Sanchez welcomed their first child, daughter Zeppelin Adele Gilford, in November 2017, news that came years after the couple announced that they had lost a baby near the end of Sanchez's third trimester. 'We regretfully confirm that Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez recently lost their child to a late-term miscarriage,' a rep for the couple told PEOPLE in 2015. After welcoming Zeppelin via surrogate, the actors told PEOPLE, 'We have always wanted to be parents, and Zeppelin has made our dreams come true.' Opening up about fatherhood — and Sanchez — after starting their family, Gilford told Us magazine that he can 'tear up' just by watching her as a new mother. 'My wife isn't like anyone I've ever met in my life,' he said in the 2018 interview. 'I think when people meet her they just fall in love with her. I feel like she's taught me how to love and you just see her looking at this baby and you just know she's a mama lion and nothing will ever happen to this kid. It's really incredible.' Bryan Kehl gives shout-out to BYU coach and former teammate: ‘He is the best of the best'

Jernaro Gilford had no idea at the time, but when he picked off Utah's Lance Rice late in the fourth quarter in 2001, he did much more than seal BYU's come-from-behind victory. Gilford made an indelible impression on Bryan Kehl. 'I was a senior in high school sitting in the student-recruiting section. That play was iconic,' Kehl told the 'Y's Guys' podcast this week. 'I got there the next year, and I just love that guy. He was such an incredible player and a great teammate. He is the best of the best.' Decades later, Gilford is still making plays in the Cougars secondary — as the cornerbacks coach and newly promoted defensive passing game coordinator, and Kehl couldn't be happier. 'He has maximized the output of the guys he's had,' he said. 'The way we have covered on the outside and at the back end is unprecedented. I would argue that we have never been so complete in our secondary, in coverage, tackling and (being) assignment sound and that is why they were so good last year.' BYU finished its 11-2 season tied with Texas for the most interceptions (22) and ranked No. 1 in total defense and scoring defense in the Big 12. With the bulk of the team returning, Kehl expects more of the same this fall. 'Last year, I was hoping for six wins and then they went through the roof. So now, my expectations are higher. I want more!' Kehl said. 'The best programs compete every single year. Why can't that be us? That's how I'm wired. Who says it can't be?' Spring practice begins Feb. 27. 'When I played, it was always about the next step. What can I do to get better?' The former linebacker said about his approach to spring drills. 'That's what I hope those guys focus on, each individually and collectively. There is always room for improvement, especially individually.' Kehl had 102 solo tackles, 21 tackles-for-loss and three interceptions at BYU (2002, 2005-07). Watching the Giants beat the Patriots on Feb. 5, 2012 in Super Bowl XLVI was a painful sight for Kehl to see. New York's 2008 fourth-round draft pick was released in 2011 and quickly signed by the lowly Rams. 'I still remember sitting at my parent's house all by myself watching that game, just disgusted. There was jealousy, anger and resentment (with) all my buddies celebrating on the field,' Kehl said. 'It was tough. Poor me. I was wallowing in my self-pity.' Adding salt to his emotional wound was the fact that it wasn't the first time the Giants won the Big Game without him. 'I missed (the Super Bowl) twice because (New York) won it the year before I got there and they won it the year after I left,' he said. 'Impeccable timing.' Kehl played 72 games over six seasons in the NFL (2008-13). Among his 95 solo tackles was a hit he will never forget. Minnesota's Adrian Peterson took the handoff, and the Giants rookie stuck him in the backfield for a loss. 'He got up afterward and tapped me on the helmet and genuinely said, 'Nice hit, man.'' Kehl said. 'It was one of those moments that was like, 'Whoa!' It was just so cool. I was really impressed with that. He's such a superstar and that interaction was cool.' Peterson retired after 15 seasons and remains No. 5 among the NFL's all-time leading rushers with 14,918 yards. He would have had a few more had Kehl not dropped him in the backfield in 2008.
