BRS moves adjournment motion in RS over Banakacherla project
Hyderabad: The BRS MPs on Thursday gave adjournment motion in Rajya Sabha against unauthorized utilization of Godavari River waters by the government of Andhra Pradesh under the Godavari - Banakacherla Project, which diverts the water to other river basins. The BRS MP KR Suresh Reddy sought suspension of business/notice under Rule 267 for 6th August 2025 urging the desire to move the motion, under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) for the suspension of business listed for 6th August 2025. 'That this House suspend the Rules, pertaining to business listed in Wednesday's agenda and discuss the unauthorized utilization of Godavari River waters by the State of Andhra Pradesh, through the construction of dams and barrages under the Godavari-Banakacherla Project, which diverts the water to other river basins, thereby affecting the interests of the state of Telangana.' Suresh Reddy said that this unwarranted diversion of resources disadvantages the people of Telangana, depriving them of their due share of water, infringing upon their right to life. This is an issue for which the people of Telangana have been agitating for decades and it has been one of the core concerns in the movement for separation, therefore meriting immediate attention and discussion, adjourning Wednesday's list of business in the House, said Suresh Reddy. MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra alleged that the AP government was constructing Banakacherla without any permission from the Central Water Commission, Polavaram Project Authority, Godavari River Management Board and Apex Council. Since it is causing damage to Telangana's water rights, the BRS leader wanted discussion of the Banakacherla issue as an urgent matter. This motion was rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Both Houses to resume after disruptions over Bihar voter roll row
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP KR Suresh Reddy submitted a Suspension of Business Notice in the Rajya Sabha, urging the House to take up the issue of the Godavari-Banakacherla Project and its impact on Telangana. Reddy alleged that Andhra Pradesh was diverting Godavari river waters through dams and barrages under the Godavari-Banakacherla Project to other river basins, thereby disadvantaging Telangana and infringing upon its water rights. Calling the diversion an 'unauthorized utilization,' Reddy said the move deprives Telangana of its rightful share of water and has long been a source of tension between the two states. Congress MPs on Wednesday escalated their concerns over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, with separate notices submitted in both Houses of Parliament. In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an Adjournment Motion Notice demanding a discussion on the matter. Citing reports that over 12 per cent of voters have been deleted from the rolls, Tagore flagged mass voter deletions and questioned the fairness and transparency of the revision process. Calling it a matter of 'grave public concern,' he said the purge undermines citizens' fundamental right to vote and Parliament's oversight role, urging the House to suspend regular business for an urgent debate. In the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala gave a Suspension of Business Notice under Rule 267, seeking a discussion on concerns about the 'integrity of the electoral processes.' Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh submitted a Suspension of Business Notice in the Rajya Sabha seeking an urgent discussion on alleged irregularities in the recently held Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Phase-13 examination. Singh flagged a series of concerns, including technical glitches, biometric verification errors, and abrupt exam cancellations during the exam period from July 24 to August 1. These issues, he said, have triggered widespread confusion among candidates and led to large-scale protests, especially in Delhi. He also raised alarm over rising anxiety among students preparing for the SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam scheduled for August 13, warning that unresolved issues could further undermine the selection process. Congress MP Hibi Eden on Wednesday moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking immediate discussion on the appointment of a judge to the Bombay High Court, citing concerns over the judge's previous political affiliations. He was referring to the appointment of advocate and ex-BJP spokesperson Aarti Sathe as a judge of the Bombay High Court. In his notice, Eden highlighted that the judge had earlier served as a spokesperson for a major political party, which, he argued, could compromise perceptions of impartiality and judicial independence. 'This appointment has sparked controversy and raises questions about the judiciary's independence and potential politicization,' Eden stated in the motion, urging the House to adjourn its regular business to take up the issue. He warned that the judge's political background could undermine public trust in the judiciary and called for urgent debate to safeguard the institution's integrity.

BRS MLA Harish welcomes EAC's decision on Banakacherla
HYDERABAD: BRS MLA and former Irrigation minister T Harish Rao welcomed the decision of the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Union Ministry of Environment, which decided to 'return' the Andhra Pradesh government's request for Terms of Reference (ToR) for the proposed Godavari-Banakacherla Project. Harish Rao on Monday also welcomed the decision of the EAC that the ToR could be not given without examination by the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT). 'This is a victory for the BRS party's struggle and a victory for the people of Telangana. This is a strong blow to Andhra Pradesh's conspiracy to illegally divert Telangana's Godavari waters under the name of the Banakacherla project. We want to make it clear that the BRS will continue its fight until the Banakacherla project-designed in a way that causes injustice to Telangana's rightful share of water is completely scrapped,' Harish Rao said.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy holds all-party meeting to oppose Godavari-Banakacherla Project
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 19 (ANI): Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy held an all-party meeting with Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar and Union Minister Kishan Reddy regarding the Godavari-Banakacherla Water Project. CM Revanth Reddy targeted former CM K Chandrashekar Rao and opposed the Godavari-Banakacherla Project. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy exposed the former BRS Government's dole of Godavari waters to Andhra Pradesh. He made public the recorded evidence that established the facts about the arrangement entered into by both governments after protracted deliberations between then Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. According to a press release by Telangana CMO, CM Revanth Reddy launched a scathing attack on the erstwhile KCR Government for pledging the river water interests of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh voluntarily. The Chief Minister will be leading an all-party delegation to New Delhi to meet the Union Minister for Water Resources to voice the serious objection of Telangana over the proposed Banakacherla project by the Government of Andhra Pradesh which would cause an irrevocable loss to the interests of Telangana. Addressing media persons soon after an all-party meeting, convened by him here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister narrated the sequence of the events that led to the agreements that were completely detrimental to the interest of Telangana. He exposed how KCR had vowed to convert 'Rayalaseema into Ratanala Seema (land of gems)' by letting Godavari water into the basins of the Krishna and Penna, at the expense of Telangana's interests, the press release said. When N Chandrababu Naidu was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2016, KCR, in his capacity as the Chief Minister of Telangana, compromised the interests of our people and state pulled by proposing at the Apex Council meeting that there was an excess water available to an extent of 3,000 tmc feet in the Godavari of which 1,000 tmc ft was going to waste into the Bay of Bengal. Launching an attack on the KCR Government, Revanth Reddy said that the BRS leaders were unhesitatingly propagating blatant lies for political gains. 'I want to explain how they had spoken while in government and how they twisted it after losing power,' he said, adding that they were lying through their teeth to revive their plummeting party fortunes either by hook or by crook, attempting to stoke false narratives. As per the official statement by Telangana CMO, when the Congress was in power between 2004 and 2009, 'we built irrigation projects to relieve farmers of their hardships. Though KCR and former Irrigation Minister Harish Rao had cooperated with the government back then, with complete understanding and even offered suggestions. We agreed to accommodate their inputs. However, they are now resorting to mudslinging on us with malicious intention and dubious objective of deriving political mileage.' Quoting from the eight-page minutes of the Apex Council meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 21, 2016 at Shram Shakti Bhawan in the national capital, Revanth Reddy said, 'KCR proposed to divert 3,000 TMC feet of Godavari waters belonging to Telangana, saying they were going wastefully into the sea to Rayalaseema.' The very foundation for the idea of supplying water to Rayalaseema was laid in that meeting. This project, however, got delayed either due to political reasons or lack of compatibility and camaraderie between Chandrababu Naidu and KCR until 2019. According to the press release, he added that things took a turn after YS Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the first time and KCR got a renewed term in Telangana. KCR had held four rounds of meetings with Jagan and decided to transfer water to Rayalaseema. Details of the deliberations between the two governments were explained to the media by the then ministers Eatala Rajender and Buggana Rajendranath Reddy at a press conference. KCR had declared at that time: 'We will transform Rayalaseema into Ratnala Seema (Land of Gems.' Revanth Reddy said that Andhra Pradesh was now moving ahead with the project based on discussions that happened between KCR and Chandrababu Naidu in 2016 on the Godavari-Banakacherla issue. KCR stated back then, 'There are no basins or solutions.' AP wasn't pursuing a 200 TMC project--it's for 300 TMC. 'KCR had agreed that Andhra Pradesh could take even up to 400 TMC.' The Chief Minister said: 'We don't want to join the issue and engage in arguments. So, we appealed to the Union Water Resources Ministry, asserting Telangana would never compromise on its interests and let go of its natural resources. Our government has never shied away from its primary responsibility of protecting the interests of Telangana, come what may. 'BRS never worked for Telangana. The interests of the State were never a priority for them. They did not complete a single project in districts like Palamuru. In 10 years, they failed to finish even one pending project,' Reddy said. The Godavari-Banakacherla Link Scheme is a massive project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh Government at an estimated cost of Rs 80,112 crore. The plan involves diverting 200 TMC of water from the Godavari River at Polavaram to Rayalaseema through the Bollapalli reservoir and Banakacherla head regulator. The proposal seeks to interlink the Godavari, Krishna, and Penna rivers. (ANI)

EAC holds meeting on Polavaram–Banakacherla Project
The Environmental Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment convened a meeting to discuss the environmental clearance for the Godavari-Banakacherla Project on Tuesday (June 17, 2025). The committee is led by Professor Chakrapani, and the meeting was held in virtual mode from the Ministry's office in New Delhi. As part of this meeting, the committee is reviewing the proposal submitted by the Andhra Pradesh Government and will evaluate the environmental impact of the Banakacherla project. The Water Resources Department officials consider the meeting of the EAC as a major milestone in the approval process. The committee is now assessing the likely environmental consequences of undertaking the project. Based on the committee's report, subsequent permissions will be considered. Recognising the importance of the moment, the A.P. Government is treating this meeting with utmost seriousness. The A.P. Government would be asked to conduct the environmental impact, studies, etc. The EAC, at present, is studying the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) of the Godavari-Banakacherla Link project proposed by Andhra Pradesh. The EAC's evaluation report will play a critical role in determining the project's future permissions. At a later stage, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) would be prepared. The EAC meeting assumes significance in the wake of the Telangana Government's serious objections to the project. Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has written a letter to the EAC, urging it not to grant any approval and to outrightly reject the Banakacherla Project. He stated that the Andhra Pradesh Government was moving ahead with the project without prior consent or notification to Telangana. The project seeks to divert the Godavari waters to the Krishna basin, which he claims will result in violating Telangana's legitimate water rights. He strongly urged that no environmental clearance be granted to the project.
