Hai Apna Dil

The moment you hear Hemant Kumar's voice as he starts, 'Hai apna dil, toh awara,' and humming the next line, making us wait for what will unfurl after that tantalising intro, you're in an endorphin bubble. From the 1958 Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman-starring film, Solva Saal, we turn carefree and the heart readily unburdens. From the very first line of this SD Burman classic, Kumar captures a chap who wears his wanderlust proudly, like a badge stitched to his kurta, loose and fluttering in a B&W Bombay breeze. The clip-clop of the song, and the way it skips with the percussion and harmonica, all conjure up a 'forget everything, everything's fine' smile. It's a tune that doesn't walk-it saunters, with hands in its pockets and turn of the head. 'Haseenon ne bulaya/ Gale se bhi lagaya/ Bahot samajhaya,/ Yahee na samajha...' goes Majrooh Sultanpuri's delighful lyrics, perfectly capturing what Chaplin's Tramp may be constantly singing if not in silent films. The song's joy is unshackled by a singular purpose: extolling the sheer pleasure of freedom. This is happiness in 4:25 minutes.

Agra woman arrested for pushing 9-year-old ‘adopted' daughter into prostitution

The Agra police have arrested a woman for allegedly forcing a 9-year-old girl into prostitution and assaulting her, said officers Monday. According to the police, the girl approached a man around 4 pm Sunday and asked him to take her to a police station.'She told the man that the woman had adopted her and had been forcing her into prostitution for the last two years,' said Hemant Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Agra (Sadar Bazaar). Kumar said the police filed an FIR based on the man's complaint, and took the woman into custody. 'She said during interrogation that she adopted the girl two years ago, and since then, she has pushed her into the flesh trade. We are investigating the case further,' said the ACP. According to the police, the FIR was filed under section 70(2) (rape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. When contacted, Kumar told The Indian Express that the woman had 'bought' the child from an acquaintance for Rs 60,000. 'She had not legally adopted her, but she had an affidavit from the person from whom she had taken the kid. Prima facie, it looks like all of them are involved in human trafficking,' said the ACP. The woman, the police said, would call people at her house to rape the girl. Apart from the woman, the police have booked three men. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express.
